Sunday’s game in doubt? - high winds

I’ve had my weather apps for 10 years and to be honest Sunday is the highest rainfall measurement I’ve ever seen Sheffield have in the last 10 years.
It’s easily a months (more like 6 weeks) rain hitting Sheffield crammed into 12 hours.

According to the app it’s going to be medium raining all through the night/ early morning, then 9am whilst 12 noon it turns into heavy rain.
Then 12 noon whilst 6pm, there will be an almighty monsoon style downpour where it’s bouncing off the roads and pavement.
Then at 6pm it turns into very light rain the rest of the night and eventually stopping about 10pm

Don’t think I’ve ever seen at close quarters a torrential downpour at the same time as 30 to 50 mph gale force winds.
The rain will be flying horizontally, if winds gets inside the stadium then surely the players won’t be able to see the ball properly.
The app says temperatures will hit a warm 13 degrees when the match is due to start....so at least it won’t feel cold.

Has anyone ever played football in these types of conditions?
Wonder what the official word is from the club? Is there actually a serious chance it could be cancelled?

I can understand cancellations for snow and ice but surely it’s rare that a top flight game could be cancelled due to storm conditions.

Lots of old terraced housing around the ground, dont want anyone getting killed or injured with flying roof slates or worse falling chimney stacks.

Call it off on Saturday.

The official word from Graeme Madge at the Met Office regards Sunday’s weather is

The storm “will take conditions from rather benign to very unsettled”

Now that doesn’t sound too bad ha ha

Take it you've never played football at Concord Park or Castle Dyke Playing Fields :)

Or behind the Sportsman on Redmires Road. Th only place I've played where the ball went 10yds forward and 50 back.

I take it the club will be distributing those plastic rain ponchos for the exposed seats now we're big time

It's like that every week where my u15s play. In one game last season, my lad was nearly scoring from every goalkick in the first half and couldn't get them out of his area in the second.

Or Queensbury near Bradford which like Boundary Park in Oldham is officially above the Arctic circle and has permafrost and constant gales, and that’s just summer!
Any place that is next to somewhere called Mountain is likely to be bracing

I've played in blizzard conditions before.

My top lip froze up, kid you not.

Met Office now saying heavy shower instead of heavy rain, and a bit of sun peeking through the cloud. Should be fine, I hope...

The Desso was always going to cope with the rain it’s the high winds that might make it a bit farcical

Tomas Schafenaker just described the weather as “vicious winds, vicious strong winds”

Now that we’ve enclosed off 3 of the 4 corners will a massive amount of wind get inside the stadium?
The wind is south westerly, so it’s hitting the Westfield corner stand corner of the stadium first...so at least that corner is protected and enclosed.

The only time I have even had problems with wind at Bramall Lane was after a particularly heavy night on the Wards and a Chicken Vindaloo from the Shapla.

I don't think any decision to postpone it will be down to inside the ground unless the pitch is waterlogged, it’s more likely how safe its going to be to travel and streets around the ground, so it’s have to be made early for the Bournemouth fans sake. Pity really because it looks like we’ve just about sold out the home end, but lives shouldn’t be put at risk.

Just as long as it’s not another OTT MO warning that turns to be nothing but a brisk breeze, but it does look like it’s the real deal so I’ve taken down my winter hanging baskets. I don’t want mi pansies ending up in next doors.😁

The wind speeds on the forecast seem to be creeping up. Now showing at 59mph at midday.

Hopefully everything in the garden is secure.

You could just bring Roo with you if you're that worried.

Ive text him, he knows it might be off.

Forecast I've just seen has it slightly better than predicted over the last few days.

Not as much rain and gusts during game in low 40's instead of 50's.
