Sunday’s game in doubt? - high winds

My mate has heard nothing since the early tip off, his son has been looking forward to it for weeks.

Personally I hope it goes ahead everyone who wasn’t at Palace is looking forward to see Sander in the Flesh.

Never mind the tarp, half the stand probably ends up there

I’ve got several apps, which show hour by hour forecasts for the next 7 days.

I’ve checked Belfast, Liverpool and Sheffield and the weather is similar at all 3 places.

It’s not scaremongering, wish it was
The bad news is heavy rain (virtually all day) and very windy....constant 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.
The only good news for those at the match is that the wind is coming from the south...so the temperature actually warm up through out the weekend
and will be a barmy 12 degrees at the match...even allowing for windchill the app says it will still feel like 12 degrees.
Its even going to be a surprisingly warm 10 degrees Sunday early morning and Sunday evening too....so at least it won’t feel cold.

I find the apps to be accurate most of the time...the forecasts can be out by several hours the longer in future it is ...and occasionally it’s totally wrong.

As a bricklayer who relies on weather forecasts, I assure you that those apps are absolute dog shit. Many times I've not bothered turning up because they forecast rain only for it to be blue skies. Especially the met office.

With all this wind, Wendy’s tarpaulin will be at risk of blowing off and covering over the Lexus dealer up the road

It'd be better if it covered up Winn Gardens next door

Bournemouth fan on their forum phoned up United to ask whether it would be on and they said there would be no decision until tomorrow.

One match in February if it's called off

We have already played Palace on the 1st and still have Brighton on the 22nd!

I have the feeling now that it will be off.

Rescheduling nightmare if it is. Villa and probably the Man U game will also want rescheduling as well.

Ive heard of matches being postponed because of frozen pitches, waterlogged pitches or heavy snow around the ground
but has a pro match ever been called off before because of strong winds?

Theres a simple test....someone will be down on pitch tomorrow morning checking if the ball stands still when taking a free kick, goal kick etc
They’ll also check the pitch if there’s any chance of puddles forming.
Then they’ll check the local Sheffields news reports to see if there’s been much structural and tree damage during the night.

You can bet both clubs will be desperate to play it....I reckon there’s a 70% chance of it going ahead....I'm still expecting it to be played.
Wonder what the odds are and if you can bet on a match being called off.

Remember the national news are Southern biased and London based....they are going to see much stronger winds than us.

I think it will be called off given the authorities are saying people should only travel where it’s essential. Hope I’m wrong though.

If there was a serious risk then both tomorrows Sheff Utd and Man City matches would have already been postponed.
What are they waiting for? Both clubs know the hour by hour forecast and know all about the weather warnings. So the risks must be minimal.

The area in and around the stadium is likely to be safe. Its the journeys to the match which will be potentially hazardous.....but just set off earlier, drive slowly and have patience and awareness. I still think Wilder and Co will have a kick around tomorrow morning to see how much wind gets inside the stadium and how the ball plays. I’m sure a decision will be made early (about 9am)....if it’s not postponed early morning...then it’s going ahead....the club are in a very difficult position.

I think as you said earlier they'll probably assess it tomorrow after seeing what damage there's been overnight.

This happened in Feb 2014, though I think that was a red warning rather than amber, and they waited right until just before the game at Man City v Sunderland and then called it off because stuff like program seller kiosks were blowing over outside the ground. Similar happened at Everton the same night.

Not sure if those games were on TV or not though so no doubt that would add a pressure not to cancel it tomorrow. Also I don't think safety of travelling fans will be a factor in this as that is outside the club's and the league's area of responsibilty (you travel at your own risk if you ignore rail network and met office warnings not to travel) , it'll be more about safety around and in the ground.

Listening to that wind now and it's going to get a good 50% stronger tomorrow. Can't see it going ahead.

I might be wrong but the 6 nations went ahead this evening, in pretty dreadful conditions torrential rain & very strong wind which made the post match interview funny as he got caught in 1 of the gusts, nearly blew ad board away. then surely the football will

the game is still going ahead, according to this
