Sunday’s game in doubt? - high winds

SAG will be getting twitchy with 50mph wind forecast There were issues at the Brentford game I seem to remember last season that some exits had to closed.

I'll just reiterate the above ^

This will be the reason. All of the South Stand and Westfield Corner had to exit the South Stand on to Cherry Street as the gates to Bramall Lane were shut. The safety group won't be keen if that is the case again.

It's just been upgraded to a named storm saturday through sunday.

Heavy rain all day with the worse downpours due to hit Sheffield between 12 noon and 6pm.
Still showing as a surprisingly warm 12 degrees when the match kicks off....so very wet and windy but at least it wont be cold.
The wind is coming from the South...so even the wind won’t be cold either.

Tickets are seeking really well for Sundays match...it’s already heading for a home sell out...mainly only Kop tickets left.

Why did the fact that it was windy mean that no one could exit onto Bramall Lane?

I assume there was a danger that the gates would blow to on someone or there was an excessive wind-tunnel effect risking people getting blown over.

Dunno... no official reason was given. It was bloody windy that day though, especially on Bramall Lane.

Still a bit gusty the forecast though.

Anyone with a wig should wear a hat.

Has there been any intimations of problems from the club yet? Given the distance away fans (and some of our own) have to travel I’m sure no one will be leaving this to the last minute so I’d like to think they’re already thinking about it

Only what was said in the OP.

That came from the kids school. I assume they had been tipped off from someone within the club but not sure.

You'd have thought a strong chain would prevent the gates blowing onto anyone.

Weather update (a serious one).

Yesterday the prediction for kick-off Sunday was 25 mph constant winds with gust up to 50 mph, with very heavy rain but warm temperatures.
Now the prediction is 31 mph constant winds and gusts up to 58 mph, still heavy rain with warm temperatures.
Its going to be like monsoon season in India ha ha.

Also noticed on the web site this match (Berges welcome to Sheffield match) is already close to a sell out for home fans.
Even with Bournmouth only bringing 1000 it might still just about break 30,000, probably just under.

Just checked the Bournmouth web site and it explains their initial allocation was 1,069 tickets.
If you try to buy an away ticket it shows that they have 113 tickets left to sell.
So I calculate they‘ve sold 956 tickets so far......so should be 1K away fans and 1.8K empty seats in the lower tier.

Moved to Rumour Mill until we get any official confirmation that this is the case.

The forecast seems to have got worse for Sunday. There's now a yellow warning of heavy rain shower from midnight to 9pm and the wind speeds now seem to be between 40 and 56 mph.

Our TV games tend to go ahead regardless of the weather. I can't remember a game being called of due to high winds, so expect this won't be called off.

Not sure which exits could be deemed unsafe and why.

It was the Bramall Lane South Stand big main gates. SS had to use Kop Side Exit. Westfield upper initially were diverted to the remaining one exit, then diverted along top tier to the fire exit steps in John St / BL corner to alleviate the queues.

This is a tricky situation for the club.

Match almost sold out for home fans (looks to be only 100 tickets left) to see Berge’s home debut in front of the BT sports tv cameras.
They won’t want to postpone it.....however high winds is an unpredictable safety risk....think we’ll try to play dispute the winds.

However another spanner in the works is the big monsoon like downpour due to arrive at 8am and stop about 6pm.
No sure how the pitch will cope with nearly a months worth of rain arriving a few hours before kickoff.
Will there be puddles forming on the pitch? Will the ball role enough? The ref might start the match but the pitch could become worse as at the moment the rain isn’t going to calm down until about 6pm.

Sunday could be one of them matches that you talk about for decades. Some memorable events.
There might be some ridiculous goals being scored. The game might become a farce and quite comical.

So make sure everyone wears there rainproofs.....at least it won’t be cold though...so could be worse.

I would imagine that it'd be more of a health and safety risk to spectators rather than a footballing issue, although that'd obviously be a factor as well.

The wind will be blowing from the south-west and looking at where Bramall Lane is positioned on a map, the family stand will be worst hit. Storm Ciara will basically be slapping the shit out of children and the disabled for two hours...

Agree....but the risks travelling to and from the stadium are difficult to predict with any confidence.

Damage caused by high winds is always random and unpredicatable.
Also although there is a risk of flash floods...at least the roads will be relatively quiet...with it being a Sunday.
I think the club will risk it....but in todays nanny state they sometimes like to be extra cautious regards safety.

If we don’t play the game then there would be a re-scheduling issue with the Villa game and probably the Man U game to rearrange as well. All three would probably have to be played in the last three weeks of the season.

What's a couple of hours getting the shit slapped out of you after watching a whole season of a Sheffield United managed by Adkin's?

If it goes ahead I can be late home and tell the mrs that the pub was a lock in for satety reasons.

If it doesn't go ahead, I can say I was blown into a pub and that it was subsequently a lock in for safety reasons.

I don't see a downside to this.
