At long last, a Sheffield derby!

Would be nice to have a few international games against reasonably decent opposition for a change…As nice as Chessy, Alfreton, Roth, Hudds and York are.

I hope your right never been to stenhousemuir, do like going up Scotland for friendlies. Cowdenbeath was the last one I went to fantastic weekend. Got a feeling it could have been Harry Mcquires first team debut season can't remember year tho.
Aye
A wonderful club with an awful 1 sided ground
Attend a game every season for > 25 seasons that started with someone’s impending marriage

I’ll save multiple anecdotes for when things are really boring
Wee tasters:- they have a Norwegian based fan club with > 300 members - Warriors Abroad

Given United have paid for the relaying and sorting out the drainage at Dronfield, the might as well be one of first clubs to play on it!

I’m a subscriber to the fantastic Nutmeg magazine. Some great writing on the lower end of the Scottish game, which is a fascinating world. There is nothing to compare to it for the English game.

The Pie & Bovril forum is also brilliant.

I like both Stenhousmuir and Cowdenbeath just because of the names.

Absolutely this!
Having ‘done’ all the ‘usual’ affordable stag weekend destinations we were seeking something a tad different (exotic?) & the notion of (alternative) Caledonia was born.
Perusal of fixtures on the proposed dates afforded ONLY one feasible destination.
A few years later I was interviewed by the match day programme editor (+ club secretary+ licensee +safety officer +supporters club organiser+ …..)
My response to the question:- “Why Stenhousemuir” was subsequently immortalised in print under the headline
“The semantic allure of Stenhousemuir versus Cowdenbeath”

As you say a total different & far better world to boot.

Recently relegated North Derbyshire club "Sheffield FC" have a home friendly on 4 July, v a Huddersfield Town XI. Then will play at home in North Derbyshire against Sheffield since 1860 based club, Hallam on 15 July for the Youdan Trophy. Both before the friendly v a Sheffield United XI.

I said one of the first not the first!!

Apologies, I know, I wasn't intending to contradict you. Just passing on information.

For some reason Phil, with his Hallam hat on, needs to take every opportunity to make bitter remarks about Sheffield Club.

"Just passing on information" - including "recently relegated" and "North Derbyshire". It's a shame he doesn't do as much as you do for grassroots south yorkshire sport with your online publication.

Hi there.

Here's the link to South Yorkshire Sport No. 6 from 24 April 2025. Knowing how much I support grassroots South Yorkshire Sport, MobileBlade asked me for a piece on Hallam's Promotion to leapfrog recently relegated North Derbyshire club "Sheffield FC".

I was delighted to collaborate with MobileBlade and his excellent online publication. And I gave him free rein to edit it to suit his readership.

You have a great day...

I do actually like Phil's scribbles and if you read the original of the article that he penned about Hallam's play off final you will see he wasnt 100% supportive of some of Hallam as well - we did reign it in a bit for the final publication.

What I will say, though, is since we launched 12 weeks ago now, every club has been very supportive. Particular those at steps 3 (now!), 4, 5 and 6 and especially Hallam and Stocksbridge Park Steels. Everyone except one club, despite featuring their ladies side twice on the cover. And I have reached out to them. And to make it worse, one of our family members is on their coaching staff!

I'm going to allow myself to say. I write irreverent drivel about football and beer. I'm the Capo in a Parody Ultra Group called the Carrier Bag Firm. Surely no one takes what I have to say seriously. Turning that around, please don't take what I say about recently relegated North Derbyshire club "Sheffield FC" seriously.

I just find them such an easy target, I can't help myself. I am happy to give praise when it's due.

Congratulations to Sheffield FC, you have not released an artist impression of a new ground for over a week. Stay strong....

As I have already explained on this thread, in answer to a question, despite playing in a neighbouring County, Sheffield FC have been in higher leagues (or the same level) than Hallam for a long time.

I think they can survive "my wit".

I do enjoy your irreverent drivel!

In my mind Club & Hallam together are a huge part of football history, which has been badly underexploited by our “great” leaders! The 2 clubs should be working together, and one side denigrating the other’s reputation only serves to reduce any common vision.

Dark sarcasm in the classroom is only funny when both parties are strong. Mocking Club for playing at the back of a pub in Dronfield, when they would have moved heaven and earth for a home like Sandygate, is misplaced. Doing it, and mocking their relegation, when they are clearly trying to extricate themselves from a business crisis is just cruel triumphalism.

Club can certainly be accused of being a victim of their own arrogant “vaulting ambition”, as Bill from Stratford put it, but perhaps now can be the time for a new beginning.

UTB & FTP!
(Whoops, perhaps FTP is cruel triumphalism at the moment!)

In my opinion, too many football fans from Sheffield (and North Derbyshire of course) want someone else to promote the Sheffield Football History. Those fans want "them" to take responsibility and exploit the history.

I take a different view - clubs will die, unless fans go and watch them, pay at the turnstile, buy a programme, buy a pie, have a go on the raffle, get at it in the Clubhouse, sponsor players, that sort of thing.

If a fraction of football fans from Sheffield actually went to see Sheffield FC play, then the club would be healthy, maybe could even move back into Sheffield.

But, I fear many fans simply prefer to remain on their sofa, wrist deep in Doritos, and expect someone else to "do the thing".

And for the avoidance of doubt, I'm not levelling any of that at you, who I don't think I know, I'm speaking generically.

I'm steeped in football. I buy season tickets at local clubs, I sponsor players, I buy Ale in the clubhouse. Football NEEDS rivalry. That's one of the things that invigorates it.

Those ludicrous crowds up at Sandygate, they're not born out of "we're all in it together". They're not born out of a common vision. They're born out of - "we're playing them, we want to beat them, they're a joke".

Triumphalism in football. Hell yeah.

If Rob & Ryan can take the 6th(?) oldest club straight from the National League to the verge of the Premier League, what could somebody do with the first and second oldest, and that local rivalry.

Clubs are not grown through the turnstiles and bars these days - and there is a real football story in Sheffield waiting to be told and exploited by somebody who knows how.

UTB & ...

And another thing 🤓 I've spoken to many people this season who've been to Sandygate for the first time, or for the first time in ages, or as football tourists from other towns & cities. They haven't gone because "the City Council" promoted it. They've gone because they've heard it's a superb football experience.

Big crowds beget big crowds.

The newer visitors are there because they've heard about the connection between fans & players, they've seen all the flags, they've heard the drums in The Shed End, they've heard about and seen the pyro, they may have even heard the odd Anti-Club chant. They're going for "football" not for "heritage". I love that. I'm going to be pompous. Because I go, and get at it, and lose my shit, other fans want a piece. (I'm self aware, that's a bit bullshit, but there is a point in there.)

It was ever thus, that's why I went on The Shoreham.

I'm reminding myself this is a thread about SUFC pre season. So forgive me. I'll demount the horse now.

A flurry of clubs have announced their PSF plans today, hopefully we're not too far behind
