Seriki

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Gilchrist starts on Friday. I think Wilder views Seriki and Gilchrist as horses for courses, Gilchrist is stronger defensively and will play against stronger teams, or away from home whereas Seriki will be the option when we’re expected to make all the running against poorer teams or where we’re needing to attack in the last twenty minutes. At the moment, it’s quite rare for us to have two players in a position who can be rotated quite easily.
Think this Friday maybe the first time this season CW is in a quandary selection wise at RB.
Agree completely with above critique on both players… however last night’s performance will surely test CW’s view and consider the attacking benefits of Seriki seriously, to go for Sunderland’s jugular!
The decision he makes will give a massive indicator to me of how CW wants to approach this game and the season in general.

During lockdown quite a few of our U23 games were streamed. Even with Ndiaye playing, Seriki was at times the standout player on the pitch.
Agree, always thought he looked a totally different level at u23s. Then he got his chance vs Forest and I (along with everyone else was like), fuck, he's miles off this level.

He seemed to totally freeze.

Then you throw in the awful loan spells he's had and ya think his career looks non-league.

Now he looks Kyle Walker like.

Sometimes it’s just down to a good coaching team- having quality players around him will have helped too. The kid looks mustard.

Surely any decent manager against strong opposition would prefer to start strong and solid....that means Gilchirst to start.

Then we have a fantastic tactic to bring on a fresh Sereki half way though the 2nd half to terrorise their left back.
Similar to what happened at home to Sheff Wed.

To be honest....it's looks like he's already decided he's starting with Gilchrist and Burrows on Friday night
hence why they were both rested....so they'll both be fresh on Friday.

Regards Sereki agree...he was impressive last night.
Around me on the Kop we all agreed that Sereki was probably the man of the match.
A few of us said that people look at Arblaster and Peck......but Sereki might go on to be the BEST player from the Academy.

He was a bit of a rabbit in headlights that night, but we were up against the form team in the division and Forest's left side was very strong (was it Brennan Johnson?).

Something has clicked with him over the Summer. Perhaps he's been buoyed by the progress of his fellow academy grads and realised it shouldn't be beyond him.
I'd like to think those lads are competing with each other in a friendly sense.

I hope Bettis & co. have wheels in motion on a new deal for Seriki.
Arblaster, Peck & Brooks are all tied down. Time to look at this lad.

How many sides now, have the success we're having, whilst playing 4/5 lads from the academy regularly. It's great to see.

It is unsurprisingly missed by media and fans of other Championship clubs when they lazily brand us as "a parachute club."

Sure, there's an element of that... but we're top of the division on the back of some incredible rebuilding over the Summer (on a significant minus NET spend) and graduating a whole host of academy products.

I'd be interested to know it any club this season has had more academy graduate minutes on the field than us.

I think it’s obvious to see that he’s learning and improving. There’s been an upward curve and there’s glimpses that he could be the business with a big career ahead of him

So refreshing to see our lads that have been playing academy football making the leap to first team football and even better that we have a whole crop of them

How many teams in the EFL can boast the above stats and play in a team challenging for promotion?

Aye, fucking winds me up that, lazy.

Maybe some of it wasn’t by design and some driven by circumstances but Wilder is adding to this, looking for opportunities to rest and rotate sensibly.

I feel this is an area he has matured. We were fortunate when we got promoted that first time under him when we could almost always pick the same XI and they were available.

Perhaps even the stats may not support this, but it feels like everyone is getting some degree of game time. Yes some would want more. But aside from Coulibaly and back up keepers, all 6 full back options are getting minutes with recognised first picks such as Burrows getting nights of rest. The centre backs are all getting games in. Midfield has been well rotated and as Arblaster drops out, Davies comes back.

Moore’s absence seemed like the biggest obstacle but the last 6 matches has seen us register 5 wins and an away draw. Shame Brewster was out again as it looks like there were minutes for him, but those minutes are a good long term investment in Oné.

It seems to have bred a happy squad and that shows in results. We are on the field at least averaging almost 2.2 points per game.

Not forgetting Norrington-Davies who came through the academy and Faxon who has been on the bench this season

He’s currently got until at least summer 27 on his contract and we know we add a plus one on almost all our deals. I’m sure that because he’s moved to a regular squad player talks will go on, but he’s not going anywhere for at least the next 2 and a half seasons unless we want him to.

He who dares Rodney !

He's under contract until 2027 on a deal agreed before he went on loan to Rotherham for the second half of last season. We'll have an option to extend so there's no screaming rush to renew until he's undeniably a first team player.

This season: Sunderland? Don't know if Leeds have any academy players in their squad at the moment, there's usually one or two there. Boro too.

I remember being reasonably impressed by Seriki’s debut against Forest. Thought he looked nervous but showed definite promise for the future.

And, looking back at the responses to Deadbat’s match report at the time - Deadbat gave him 4.5 out of 10, by the way - there were one or two others who felt the same way.

This is the hottest of hot hot takes.

He was absolutely atrocious and was replaced, if I remember rightly by Osborn at right back.

I don’t know exactly what the “hot takes” comment denotes but if it’s intended to suggest dishonesty on my part then you’re wrong. I thought it at the time and it turns out I was right.

You are right our Academy is the gem stone in our crown and has been for a few years . IT COULD SAVE US MILLIONS or make us millions depending who is running the club . New owners must try and get status one so we can protect our youngsters on long contracts .

A (currently playing) team of our academy graduates would look something like:

Ramsdale

Seriki
Walker
Maguire
Norrington-Davis

Arblaster
Peck
David Brooks

N’Diaye
Calvert-Lewin
Che Adams

Subs:
Slater
Lankshear
Sharp
Osula
Long
Whiteman
Andre Brooks

That side would have a half-decent chance at staying up in the Prem. Which is phenomenal when you think of how much clubs spend to be competitive in that league. I doubt many academies in the country could match that. I’m assuming Man U, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea could, just based on numbers. Maybe Southampton? But we’re right up there in terms of output. And pound for pound spent we must be top two or three.

One of the best boy to man transformations since Dustin Hoffman starred in the Graduate with Anne Bancroft.

🤣

Brilliant comment and it's so accurate.

It's not just his football but his physicality and athleticism really stand out.
He's only young but already looks so much stronger and quicker than his opponents.....what's he going to be like in a few year?

In recent matches he looks like a man playing against boys.
A bit like Kyle Walker....even when he's caught out of position.....he stills managers to use his pace to rectify his error.

We were saying last night on the Kop.....everyone thinks Arblaster or Peck might be the next big PL star
but it might end up being Sereki who ends up being the biggest success from our Academy.
