Seriki

Wilder went double-condom for a tug last night so Seriki was never going to feature.

I'm not going to write off Shackleton yet, it's way too premature, but I'm getting the sense that he's a right footed equivalent of Ben Osborn.
I thought defensively he did a very good impression of Jayden Bogle last night

If Wilder was shitting himself about the full backs 1 on 1 defending then why not start Seriki?

Or why not put Brooks in front of Burrows to help out?

Why even drop Gilchrist? Because although not the quickest he's excellent at blocking crosses and cutting things out

Any number of line ups would have fared better

I don’t understand why he was scared of that cos I’ve not seen Gilchrist beat once. He’s a bit dubious going forward but fuck me can that lad defend.

Yep. With quick wingers he increases the distance a bit, doesn't jump in, invites the cross and nearly always cuts it out. Very good positioning and defensive brain. But let's leave him out away to the team whose attack Wilder is clearly most terrified of

Agree that Jamie Shacks should be no where near starting right back. Nice lad, tidy footballer and nippy but him being tiny and weak really does not help us defensively. Gilchrist got to be first choice with the unit Seriki to bring on to push the opposition back, Jamie Shacks into midfield

Seriki always stands out as he provides a big attacking threat which is what we have lacked this season. When he combines with JRS or Brooks they seem to run the opposition ragged. I've not seen enough of him defensively to judge if he should play in the back 4 but I did wonder earlier in the season if he should be getting the nod ahead of Gilchrist. I didn't rate Gilchrist early on but he has improved alot so it's hard to drop him now. Seriki should be getting more game time though when we are chasing a game like today.

If Gilchrist and Seriki had a child ...

There seems to be a general consensus that Seriki can't defend very well.
From what I've seen, I don't think he's much worse than Gilchrist defensively...
.. but unlike Gilchrist, Seriki has bags of pace and technical ability that help us out at both ends.

He's shown a great knack for sweeping up at the back and cutting out danger (remembering the Wednesday intercept and another one tonight).
But he also makes JRS look better by giving him an option on the outside, allowing JRS to cut in on his favoured left foot.
Seriki is also happy with taking his man on down the outside or coming inside (a little bit similar to Bogle in that respect).

Personally, I think the shirt should be his for now.
It's not a slight on Gilchrist, who has been really impressive and reliable.
I've just come to form a very high opinion of Seriki and I'd like to see more of him.

What's his contractual situation? It will need sorting sharpish if it hasn't been already.

Maybe that comes from his performance against Forest when he was 18.

I've see no sign of any defensive issue this season when he's been excellent going forward as well.

MoM today for me.

It’s certainly time to give Seriki a run and see what he’s made of defensively against a good side like Sunderland. Gilchrist is solid as a rock in 1-1s, is good in the air and his defensive positioning is excellent. Seriki doesn’t give me that confidence yet but, as you say, his physical attributes are insane and that allows him to cover us on breakaways and cover his own slips.

Might be a bit of a gamble and I suspect he might have the odd uncomfortable game against tricky wingers, but what he gives us going forward makes it worth it. That combination of JRS coming inside and him going outside down the right is a complete nightmare for defenders. He also allows us to break a press or disrupt a med / low block by the speed at which he takes any space in front of him. With gilchrist there, the Oppo just lets him have it and double up on JRS because they know Gilschrist won’t hurt them.

I think they will both have their roles to play this year but Seriki is looking like the surprise of th season if he can keep his form up. We’re a completely different attacking force with him in the side.

I have to disagree re: Gilchrist's defensive positioning being excellent.

He makes a lot of recovery tackles, solely because he's been caught out in a narrow position.

It's his first season playing full-back, so there is an element of him learning on the job and he is improving all the time.

It's great to have the pair of them competing.

He played well and was a stand out but you can't look past hamer for mom mate.

Played every well going forward and made a well timed tackle to stop the counter attack on edge of our box out of no where.

He was very good tonight good engine gets forward strong would just like to see an end product few crosses rather than simple pass back. Very impressive tonight some good performances from the kids.

Giving our own player game time has to be a good thing too. Gilchrist is a good player but we don’t own him, I like that he’s bought into the Blades though
