Scouting infrastructure problems

Brentford have been doing this since they were in league one so it’s good to see us adopting a similar approach. The signings obviously make the headlines now but I guess in future we’ll be able to do the deals during the longer summer window. It’s certainly a signal of the intent from the new owners in their approach and also Wilders willingness to work with this approach.

It’s noticeable that these deals got done and announced AFTER the main signings were done.

I don’t entirely think it puts pressure on the academy lads as the U23’s development squad will also be there for the new lads and the academy lads. They’ll all be playing with a higher quality or different types of players so it will help them all develop together

I think it puts pressure on us to get the academy to cat 1 as well and bring on better players as well, keep pushing the bar higher.

It’ll be interesting to see how these work out, Sheffield is certainly a diverse city with plenty of young foreign students around so we should also have a good base of a city for them.
Isn’t that what Jay aka BladesAnalytic is/was doing at Luton?

I don't know what he does to be honest, i know he did something with Peterboro, I think which was why he had to stop doing his Blades Analytics stuff and giving his insight on the podcast. I wasn't aware / don't recall him going to Luton.

But speaking generally about our approach, i think we have been using data for a number of years, right back to Adkins in League one with the GPS vests, to Wilder developing further.

I'd be interested to know more about our approach and see how it progresses.

I've been looking more into this briefly and it just makes me even more annoyed

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neal_Maupay

This player had a decent scoring record in the French second division last season. The stats are all available on Wikipedia. It took me 30 seconds to find them.

He signs for Brentford for just £1.6 million and has already scored twice in three games. At the age of 21 and a former French youth international he is likely to only get better.

Could we have scouted him before Brentford got him?

If not, why not?
If we could, why didn't we?

This is why you don't rely on Wikipedia 😂

We all had suspicions that Wilder was an absolute dinosaur and narrow minded with signing forrun players, but for him to come out and admit he only wants players who are UK based because they have a better work ethic is down right ignorant and negligent. It's insulting when we see players who have come from overseas tear us apart most weeks, but we won't even entertain that because Wilder can't manage them.

Get someone in who can because whatever model we have is holding us back so much.

Meanwhile we don't look outside the UK because these don't fit with our culture- whatever the hell that is.
Every club is a local community asset ( or historically was) and with it, its own culture, so why is ours so unique that we don’t maximise the world market but still go t’corner shop?

I think Wilder still being in charge is the main driver for (lack of) change.
It’s an interesting one because successive owners have palmed this off onto Wilder while controlling the purse strings and I assume having the final say?

When the latest owners tried to do the scouting they walked blindly into Ai to ‘save time and money’ I presume and we ended up with ‘the worst transfer window ever’.

Still, surely it’s the owners responsibility to set up scouting systems and the like while the manager should focus on the team?

Your probably correct in that summation .

Despite the owners not being football people ( are they ever and if they are tend to be troublesome at clubs) , its also inconceivable that they dont have a plan and stratergy for a post wilder environment.

Imho the contract extension is simply a holding pattern , stay in the division, no long term legacy contracts , whilst they sort out the PA stuff and obtain investment.

Its not without risk but I can see the logic .

Meanwhile we might have to endure a pretty unedifying season of football .

For those who haven't seen the comments, at the end of the interview above around the 25 minute mark he essentially says:

'I'm not interested in players outside of UK and Scandinavia as they do not fit into our club culture'

He then cites how David Moyes bought Tim Cahill in the early 2000's as a model that he would like to replicate.

So that means if there's a talented Spanish/French player who would be interested in joining us from overseas, it appears Wilder would reject them based on those criteria.

Absolutely astonishing.

Some of our fans will cling to the AI farce as a legitimate reason why we shouldn’t modernise now or in the future. I’d say that the signings of people like Shackleton, Rothwell, Choudhury and Cannon are much more damning of a poor recruitment framework than a few cheap punts using AI that were never allowed to see the light of day in a competitive environment.

We actually have to watch the 4 I’ve mentioned above and will likely have to until their deals end and go down the leagues on a free transfer.

AI using a shite model is clearly not the answer, but something different surely needs to be done.

Should have been done.
A long time ago..but here we still are…full circle. 🤷‍♂️

I have been telling you for Years Wilder is long past his sell by date.
This Club will not move forward until its stripped back to the bare bricks from top to bottom and modernised.
That's why I was so vocal at the end of last season with regards to getting rid of Wilder.
Modernisation is not going to be a quick fix, and we will probably have to take a season or two for it to work. By keeping Wilder on this season we will have wasted a season so even if Wilder left today its going to take at least another two seasons for us to see any meaningful change now especially Wilders new additions.

Cahill, the Australian, used as an example is the best bit about this 🤣

You’re being a bit obtuse there. He didn’t say ‘British players’. He said ‘British-based players who are playing in the Championship or League 1’. Cahill was doing well for Millwall at the time.

I don’t agree with Wilder’s approach, by the way. The lethargy of our play suggests a lack of this elusive ‘work ethic’ that he prioritises.

The last 30 seconds of the interview he's just saying words, that don't make any sense. It's quite funny.

The same Tim Cahill who came from the other side of the world? 🤦

Another classic Wilderism

I heard him try and answer a Radio Sheffield question put to him regarding tactics and formations the other day and it was the same. Got himself into a right tizz and just started spouting random words, he looked out of his depth. He’s obviously feeling the pressure and should resign before it gets worse for himself and the team.

I was, however if Millwall had Wilder’s approach they wouldn’t have bothered bringing Cahill over from Australia in the first place and he wouldn’t have been allowed to thrive in England.

Nearly 10 years since the start of this thread and we've been to the Premier League twice and nothing has changed much. Crazy work 😂 😂
And this is the underlying reason that the current administration needs sweeping out and replacing. For all the ‘success’ we’ve enjoyed the club is right back where it started. Look at the clubs that have overtaken us and they all have one thing in common - they’ve adapted to the new world.

Our scouting infrastructure extends as far down the M1 as Wilder and Hoyland can get, as long as they have enough fuel to get back, because those bloody motorway prices...
