it is worrying the names we wouldnt take because you look at brighton they signed mitoma for 3m & then not to say that our talented player of the modern era was senegalese
It’s maddening. The reason clubs look abroad is because the value is better. We have a strong currency and attractive wages to the rest of the world. It’s nothing to do with ‘culture’, it’s a value assessment.

All 3 clubs have signed players <£3m that would have been within our budget if we’d have looked, but we’d rather spend the money on Cannon, Chong & McGuinness.

Think we have to stop using Brightfordmouth as comparisons now. They've gone. Left us way behind. Over the hill and far away. Father Dougal levels of far away.

How do we perform in our own circle, vs WBA/ Stoke/QPR etc? Let's out - perform these as a first step to progression.

Leeds/Sunderland/Ipswich should be the model. They’ve both been down to league one and have left us behind. Yeah they have bigger crowds but they’re not massively out of budget.

We should be throwing all the money in the world at Jamestown analytics, look at what they’ve done for Ipswich and Swansea.

An educated team would work out what attributes define our ‘culture’ and go as scout regions that share those attributes. There’s nothing unique about football players in England.

Absolutely unbelievable that Wilder has said that and it’s very depressing for the direction the club is going.

I can’t get my head around how he could think it’s the best way to be successful. All the successful clubs in this country are full of foreigners ffs!

I wonder what our foreigner owners make of our manager not wanting foreigners players and foreigners not understanding the culture.

This would be hilarious if it wasn’t our club.

I agree on Jamestown - the issue is that they're only allowed to consult with 1 team per league. My understanding is that Swansea only got the partnership this year because Ipswich got promoted. So we'd need Swansea to get promoted before the opportunity next arises.

Not that we'd ever be in the running for it anyway. 😂

Given the state of the US administration, it would be interesting to know the politics of our absent owners, and compare that to Wilder's 'culture' claims.

The fact that Wilder can say that and a significant proportion of our support accepts it is the real issue.

Here, our 'culture' is set around our manager, coaching team and recruitment's personal and professional limitations, now with financial issues added to the bonfire of our aspirations.

From a play off final to open talk of keeping us in the league is some going, even for a dysfunctional business.

Not being funny like but is there anything we as fans can do about this?

It appears we are in a unanimous agreement about this situation and Wilder's comments and approach as being unacceptable.

Is there another fan's forum coming up or a fan's advisory group that can raise this?

Can we get one of the journos to scrutinize him properly on this?

I don't agree with his view on us using the foreign market (or lack of) but surely last thing we need is more public dismay? Pretty much fighting to stay in league here

Certainly they aren't entities to compare ourselves to. Instead, they should be goals for us to aspire to.

There's obviously a bridge to cross in terms of the funding that has been available to Brighton/Brentford/Bournemouth, but we should still be able to operate something similar on a more modest budget.

It's straight negligence at this point to ignore the vast majority of the world from a scouting perspective. If we make the right transfer at the right time, we could end up with an enormous profit on our hands.

You'd just encourage Danny Hall to write something negative about Soumare and Selles and why the foreign market doesn't work.

I think most clubs of around the same size have looked at replicating the Brighton/ Brentford / Bournemouth model.

Whilst it looks a simple Blueprint , its not so easy just to copy and expect the same outcome . It takes alot of money up front and sustaining that over several years , even then having the right people and a degree of good fortune comes into play and theres still no guarantee of success . If it fails the club is at risk accumulating huge debts .

As Ive said on another thread , its inconceivable that the owners aren't looking at a post wilder environment but also need to commit to the time and money required .

Its a pretty universal held belief that we need to change , just how and when are the difficult decisions as it cant be half hearted .

Has anyone considered that Wilder realises what sort of manager he is and that certain foreign players are less likely to understand/work well with him? Does a communication and management style born in non league/lower league football lend itself well to working with these players?

He had a more multi national squad at Watford - maybe he had difficulties with them. He hardly did well there. This might have influenced things

Ideally we'd be expansive enough to get the best value from wherever, but the pond we've been fishing in is still big enough for us to have done much, much better

Christopher Wilder does not take instructions (or suggestions) from punters or PlayStation managers. He’s managed over 1,000 games don’t you know.

I'm not sure it's as binary as that.

They are basically Brighton's in house analytics firm and they can only share with 1 club per division in any country that they share their data with to avoid conflicts of interest. While ever Brighton remain in the PL they can let one team in The Championship use the software but if that team gets promoted as Ipswich were then they have to give it up. That's why Swansea stepped in.

I do wonder if the final PL season in his first spell where we did look abroad more even just on loan players has put him off signing players from overseas. I can also imagine his spell at Watford put him off even more but that clubs issues are more down to how they are run, less so the squad.

He did have difficulties at Watford,he accused players of being unwilling to improve themselves.

It's exactly this. Us copying their models isn't an easy or quick fix.

Brighton and Brentford are both owned by people who in a very basic sense of the word are/were professional gamblers. Their entire fortunes were built on Data and they just transferred that to football ownership.

On top of that as well Brentford basically binned off their entire academy a while ago and pumped all the money they saved into data analytics. Went down like a shit sandwich at the time but I'm not sure there would be many of their fans complaining now.

When did we last have a first team player brought in from:

France
Italy
Germany
Spain

Apart from Jean Calve in 2011 I really can't think of any in recent times.

Edit: There was Retsos on loan from Germany very briefly

(We had Soumare from Portugal of course)

Any more?

We’ve had a couple from Belgium that we could have done more with. Someone on here has suggested this might have been via Van Winckle (apologies I can’t remember who the poster was).

Theres a lad in germany division 2 now. Zoma at nurnberg...

He will go for daft money at some point, bet our club has never heard of him.

Grbic & Olsen 👍 we’d have conceded goals playing both of them at the same time.
I remember us having that Italian under Warnock. Can’t remember him playing a game or his full name, just remember the Warnock documentary where Warnock wants names for players to go in the sea and he’s just shouting “the sea Gabby the fucking sea”

I can imagine our database consists of 7/8k British players.

I know it’s Man City but surely when you are tight for money it’s better paying for a good scouting network and having a larger world database than just spunking millions on culture carriers.
