Scouting infrastructure problems

Just shows that there was no policy of only targeting British players to begin with?
We were buying players from L1/2 and 95% of those players are British.

Always great to read old threads and this was a particularly good debate.

Yesterday's signing maybe signalled the start of a further phase in our momentum and reflects the 'playing field' we are now on. We have a bit more money now and a terrific squad, that enables us to move on slowly from our safe, UK-based approach. Our new keeper's individual circumstances were unusual and the big opportunity suddenly presented itself, so we moved in. Thing is we were aware of the player and the opportunity when it arose, even though it was in Belgium.

So Van Winkel’s first signing leads to litigation? Good start. No wonder CW was so hoarse last night. Couldn’t stop laughing.

Gone to Reading

I missed that one, a very, very good signing. Rumoured to be £7.5m. He won't be at Reading for more than a season. A front 3 of Puscas, Joao & Boye is quite a statement from a team not on parachute payments.

Yesterday's game was a great experience, congratulations to the club for pulling it off I'm sure it took a significant amount of effort and skill. I would hope that Inter were impressed by us that they maybe would be willing to loan us a couple of their players, should we ask of course.

As we know, Waghorn has gone for £8 million. A staggering amount. So I wonder how much a 'foreign equivalent Martyn Waghorn' would cost?

Only using Wikipedia I've complied a list of players that performed well in the second division (I've got too much free-time I know) in their respective countries that we should be able to afford and would have resale value that I think could add us something.

Already I have seen one move to Norwich: https://www.canaries.co.uk/News/2018/june/buendia-signs/

I’ve just clicked on all those links. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

(it is my understanding that) FIFA Regulations do not allow an U18 player to be transferred between a club in one country and a club in another country, unless both countries are in the EU or EEA. As the UK leave the EU this week, this will be the last window where English Clubs can sign foreign youngsters on transfers from foreign clubs. I emphasise that this is NOT an issue with UK Work Permits. It is a FIFA regulation. For eg a "Cesc Fabregas young lad" would not be allowed under FIFA regulations as we Brexit. There are some legal interpretations that FIFA may permit the signing of foreign youngsters in the next window as we complete "Brexit Transition". But, those FIFA regulations post Brexit will obviously have implications for foreign scouting networks.

Do we think this is still an issue? Retsos didn't work last season but that wasn't really his fault as the squad was so settled, Berge has been ok thus far.

Personally feel that Wilder is not interested in this market, and he has the right to make that choice though wonder if the club has something adequately set up should we wish to venture there.

Transfer deadline day for foreign signings, not going to get in a panic if we don't use it but seeing we are allowed one loan from abroad we could be missing a trick.

Another phoenix thread. Do you have them timetabled to bring back to life?!

We have scouts, every team does. To suggest that we're not scouting certain areas is nonsense. We just choose to only buy from certain locations.

I would imagine that we will now be using the same scouting network that Beerschot and Al Hilal use.
It wouldn't make sense to have 3 separate networks for "United World"

he might be good, bad or indifferent - no one knows yet........but Barnsley are having to be more creative than we are. He is also probably within their wage structure too.

You should have listened to Heckinbottam before the season started - the fella was in desperate straights not knowing what to expect this season from all the new, lower league players they have had to bring in after selling all the good ones.

UTB

Interesting how things have worked out for Barnsley.

Also it seems that this issue appears to be the power-keg for Wilder's future here.

It seems that this was the difference between the 'plans' for the club going forward.

As derekacorah puts it:

'All those banging on about the lack of a European scouting network might pipe down now. As a few people have said, we have one, Wilder just chose not to use it. It's disappointing if this is the case as it does show a lack of willingness to change on Wilder's part and perhaps will hold him back in future roles if he can't accept this is the way forward. That said, these names might have been pie in the sky and there might have been other factors stopping them being viable options.'

I wonder who these players were that are doing so well that we missed out on?

I heard Souczech might have been one

It's been a stick used to beat the club with and as suspected, it's not the case.

Soucek was on loan at West Ham so whether he was 'identified as a target or not' makes no difference. You give any objective person a choice of West Ham or Sheffield United and 99 times out of 100 they choose West Ham based on financial, location and long term prospect reasons.

I would be annoyed if the player doing well in Germany was Haaland though and we were offered him for £500k when we were in League 1!

Well that's a bit depressing if true, that Wilder turned down foreign players because he was afraid of relegation

I expect the Prince meant that we had the option to sign Soucek, turned it down, then he went to WHU and the rest is history

From reading around the subject Soucek was last summer not January when West Ham loaned him so wasn’t a choice of West Ham or Sheffield united

Still on the plus side it shows we have a good scouting infrastructure (if it's to be believed).

Wilder just chose not to use it :(

We'll see how he does, but nice to see some progress in this regard!

Well this is interesting - new foreign data strategy?

Could just be Football Manager!

Boss Chris Wilder said: "Christian joins the club after being identified through our new data driven transfer strategy.

"We are discovering something new here and it may take time before we see some results, but we're open to the new methods and we're looking forward to working with Christian, and others, to see how far we can go with it."

So we are now the new Brighton!

Wilder improves young players at a rate I’ve never seen before. Exciting times for some of these new lads. It adds pressure onto the academy lads. Brooks and the new lads now have to work hard to earn a place on the bench. Competitive environment is what is needed.

Especially next season where they can be loaned out to improve again. Exciting times.

Well I suppose we best just see how these new players are before we start comparing our scouting infrastructure to Brightons 😂.

Hope you are right, would be nice for a change to unearth some talent no one has heard off for cheap.

Brentford have been doing this since they were in league one so it’s good to see us adopting a similar approach. The signings obviously make the headlines now but I guess in future we’ll be able to do the deals during the longer summer window. It’s certainly a signal of the intent from the new owners in their approach and also Wilders willingness to work with this approach.

It’s noticeable that these deals got done and announced AFTER the main signings were done.

I don’t entirely think it puts pressure on the academy lads as the U23’s development squad will also be there for the new lads and the academy lads. They’ll all be playing with a higher quality or different types of players so it will help them all develop together

I think it puts pressure on us to get the academy to cat 1 as well and bring on better players as well, keep pushing the bar higher.

It’ll be interesting to see how these work out, Sheffield is certainly a diverse city with plenty of young foreign students around so we should also have a good base of a city for them.
