Why oh why did we sell Mick Jones. I haven't been able to sleep a wink for the last 43 years worrying about it and I get so ANGRY that I just have to punch the wife and kick the cat. Its completely ruined my life.

Just as we seemed to be getting a team together, we sold another good one, TO LEEDS, FOR ONLY £100k, for Gods sake. John Harris said "it would be the biggest mistake the club had ever made". What a joke the directors were in those days.

Boooooooooooooooo!

Didn't we once try to sell Jimmy Hagan to the Pigs, only for him to refuse to go?

Twas ever thus.

You sir are clearly a mentallist if you think that Mick Jones is as big a catastrophe as the ripping out of the soul of the club that was the sale of our finest ever goalkeeper. I refer you to William "Fatty" Foulke, sold to Chelsea in 1905 for a mere £50. Fifty chuffing quid! The directors in those days really were feudal lords and no mistake.

The great irony is you can't even see the irony of your own post.

Duncs, you obviously don't feel it like most of us, but I don't suppose Mccabe does either so what chance have we got.

Oh leave the man alone bully boys. Poor bloke had to wait from 3.10 when he thought it up right until 6.32. Imagine waiting for a piss that long.

After selling Alan Birchenall as well, United became the first club to sell two players for over a hundred grand each. And they were relegated. Nothing changes, eh?

Dunc didn't care. It was the summer of love, and the sun was shining and the birds were singing, or something.

I was 9 years old and when I heard we had sold Mick Jones; I cried in my bath (Friday was bathnight then). I resolved to send a letter to United which I would get all the family to sign. Complete with spelling mistakes it was duly signed by all including the dog and put in a envelope. We had to wait for more cousins/uncles to call to sign and then I walked it up the lane to post it a few days later. When I returned home the Star had arrived and the headline was 'Birchenall sold'.

My grandad said - ne'er mind kid, United'll alllus let thi down but don't gi up. Hmm

Pisspot United ............always have been always will be !

same owd.......... We get what we deserve, McCabe shud be hunted down

At around £2 a stone that has to be the worst £ for lb deal ever.

Forgot to give the reason for my OP...

SUFC, like just about every other club is a selling club. Always was, always will be. I've been told often about other clubs who 'wont sell their stars', but its a complete fallacy. If the number on the cheque is right then they'd sell you their granny, because they are a business first.

I came across the quote by John Harris about being the worst thing United had ever done, and it struck me that although many viewed the loss of Jones as exactly that, it was in part Jones departure that allowed Harris to put together the team that thrilled so many of us and became the start of a (short) golden era just a couple of seasons later.

It underlined, for me at least, that sometimes really disappointing events like player sales do turn out to be the catalyst to something better in time. I admit that it isn't like this always, but something that was predicted to be the 'worst thing' became the best United witnessed in living memory not long after.

I'm not myself predicting a golden era to start immediately, or even at all, btw. However I was, by means of a parody, suggesting that posters keep an open mind to all kinds of possibilities, not just the negative ones. It really is important not to get so bound up in the negative that their only outlet is to endlessly pour out their frustrations on forums like this, and take it out on the ones around you. So, that was my message. That all...

Michael Jones ,Michael Jones is it true what Dick Wragg says you wont come back ,Oh no ,Oh no Oh

or the Kop singing

"Hodgy, Hodgy buy us Mick Jones, buy us Mick Jones, buy us Mick Jones
Hodgy, Hodgy buy us Mick Jones, buy us Mick Jones today"

Jones and Birchenall
Fjortoft and Deane

sad times

Duncs, they compounded their error by flooging off Alan Birchenall. Perhaps a later Board got the idea to sell Deane and F from the previous Board Why flog one when you can get two off the wage bill.

After being relegated in the interim, something which could be shrugged off then a lot more easily than it can now.

And Arthur Rowley says he wants a good bit of the credit for building that side...

Also, nothing like that is happening now. The money raised from player sales is not being invested in transfers.

You should take your own advice. Keep an open mind to all kinds of possibilities, not just the positive ones. It really is important not to get so bound up in the positive that your only outlet is to endlessly pour out platitudes on forums like this.
