Blades 1 (Hill) Chelsea 2 (Osgood, Baldwin)

First time we wore black shorts for a home game that season.

Some years later my dad was telling me that he was at this fateful match. He remembers Hodgy being in tears after the match. In the late 1980s Ernie Hunt told a Sunday paper that Southampton players took a bribe so that they dont beat Coventry in the final match.

I remember towards the end Willie Carlin trying to gee the team up.

30/3/1968

FA Cup 6th round

Leeds 1 (Madeley) Blades 0

Years later I remember my dad telling me that he was at the match and we were unlucky to get knocked out of the FA Cup. He recalled that a Dronfield Blade (Nip Hague) got furious with Gary Sprake and he was attempting to run on the pitch to hit Sprake but one or two Blades in the crowd got hold of Nip before he calmed down.

The goal that knocked us out of the cup. To most of you , Paul Madeley is best remembered as an utility player but mostly played in defence. During the 1967-68 season he played centre forward in quite a few matches.

I seem to remember we sold 13,000 tickets on the big open end at Elland Road that day. Great atmosphere and we were singing along to some of the popular dogs they played on those two big Tannoy speakers they had at that end.

12/4/1968 (Good Friday)

Liverpool 1 (Hunt) Blades 2 (Currie, Reece)

This is how the first division table looked before the match. Liverpool had a good chance of winning the league and they were to play 2nd from bottom Blades twice in their remaining 9 matches.

Me and Cookie (from Donny these days) hitched a lift back on the team coach after the match. Strange season.

23/4/1968

Blades 2 (Fenoughty, Woodward) Fulham 3 (Conway, Barrett, Gilroy)

I remember my dad recalling the anguish on the evening when we threw a two goal lead away to bottom placed Fulham who scored 3 times in the last 20 minutes. My dad said there were Wednesday fans in the BLUT cheering the Fulham goals.

Tom Fenoughty was a chemist, he returned to his job as a chemist, a few years after this goal. Four goals for United.

Willie Carlin, hates cockneys,
First Lampard then Harry, sounds like a man on a mission. I liked Carlin, I remember him running towards the Leppings Lane end when we equalised and celebrated with a Blades fan. He made the goal with a great run and I think Mick Hill scored.

What a depressing day. We had to leave early to catch a train we were going on holiday. I can remember being sat on the train preying for a miracle. I must have been clutching at straws, because I think Stoke were playing in the evening and if the result went our way there was a potential reprieve.
