The game has evolved and will continue to do so. Clubs that don’t keep pace with that will go backwards. The game today is very different to how it was 20 years ago, and even 10 years ago, and so is the management of players, who have more power, expectations and choices than they have ever had.Why do we need to move on?
The big evolutions in the last 10 years have been in sports science (diet, conditioning, recovery, sleep analysis, psychological etc), coaching/tactical, youth development, scouting and recruitment. These areas are where the small margins that are the difference between success and failure are to be found.
Clubs need to continuously monitor and assess whether staff are capable of remaining on the evolutionary journey. I’m not giving an opinion here on whether Wilder and his staff are or not, but this is how it needs to be to avoid the club going backwards.
