As a plan B fine. You can have your big lump if it pleases ya.

As a plan A. In the Championship. In 2018 ?

Nay fucking chance.

With the methodology we deploy week in week out, give me a combination of Sharp, Ched, Hogan everyday of the week over any Target men sort.

UTB
Do you think we can realistically improve on our plan A which is Clarke and Sharp now, as things stand with the budget/wage structure what they are?

If Villa don’t sign anyone Hogan is a no. So then who? Give me a better alternative to our first choice 2 who is attainable?

Fucking Ched. Fuck me. Conversation over.

It’s the Bladesfans’ Way.

A few are actually hoping and praying we make no signings at all so they can take yet another kick at what they claim to be their club and have attention-seeking tantrums.
Absolutely no one wants that you weirdo.

Wilder does like a lump. That's why he signed Hanson.

Smith would be like a really good Hanson.

He'd be an impact sub more than anything but is good enough to start games, and if we added him to the mix we could suddenly become very strong from set pieces, with Norwood's deliveries already making a difference.

Smith and a quick silky fucker would give us a full range of options up front.

Ideally we'd sign someone who's 2 players in 1 - tall, quick and skillful but there aren't many around. Joao and Gallagher seemed like the closest we could get but they're now off the menu - although why the fuck Southampton won't loan Gallagher out is beyond me.
I can’t see why Smith doesn’t appeal to people. He’s an established Championship striker and QPR fans I spoke to after the game said Sylla is far from as good as him and they can’t understand why he isn’t being selected.

Just because he’s a big lump doesn’t mean he can’t play with it on the floor, he played for Fulham before QPR ffs ifs not like he’s consistently played for hoofball merchants.

As for Gallagher - fuck knows. If I was him I’d force my way out. He’ll never play ahead of Ings, Carrillo, Gabiaddini and Austin. I think they’d put Redmond up top ahead of him.

It's mad. Several pages of discussions based on a post by one guy who hasn't exactly proved himself ITK (again, apols original poster). I get that there's a desperation for a player, and a dearth of information, but hold steady, lads.

We’ll see. The all too predictable scripts are written. Nights are sleepless; fingers are crossed; knees twitching; fax gags primed and targeted.

One or two, including my correspondent, have reached premature exasperation already.

Actually it’s a desperation for no players and an opportunity for self-indulgent fire and fury. Grenades are already going off in hands.

I’d take Gregory to be fair. He’d put pressure on Sharp as our finisher.

When Coutts is back we may choose to play 1 up top, Duffy in the hole, and Fleck, Coutts and Norwood in behind. This would ensure a lot of possession and a lot of chances.

What we know about our ageing strike force from history, is that they’re accustomed to going through purple patches and dry spells. It may be so, that our funds are insufficient to bring in a striker who is a major upgrade on Leon Clarke or Billy Sharp (who between them scored roughly 30 goals last year). However, what we can do to mitigate for individual’s having dry spells is bring in somebody of a similar quality to them (Gregory) to ensure that as a combined unit our strike force are always in the goals. An assumption has been made here that when Sharp, or Clarke loses form, Gregory (or whoever else) finds it, whilst this may not always be the case, you play the odds and the more decent quality Championship strikers you have the better the output you can probably expect.

We need someone better than both of them.

We do. Hogan would unlikely to be a back up, for example, so why would we sign a back up like Gregory?
I’ve never said we will, in fact I said the opposite.

That being said if we can’t afford anyone better than Sharp and Clarke we can certainly afford someone better than Lavery as an alternative and we can at very least sign a ‘plan b’ option who might weigh in with a few goals.

Hence my suggestion of Matt Smith at QPR.

I think regardless of if Wilder gets Hogan or one of his other choices; we would need a striker of some sort even a gamble on a young lower league one for cover...to go through next 4 months with 3 strikers and 3 ageing strikers with McGoldrick very injury prone would be a big risk. Lavery is around but was not even good enough for Rotherham last year.

Wasn't meaning you. Matt Smith would be a better choice for me. But if we are/were serious about Hogan, the sort of money likely to be involved should get us a loan better than Smith or Gregory.

If.

My keenness to sign a striker doesn’t go as far as to sign Gregory , no way I’d rather go with what we’ve got.

Should. But who else is there? We’re running out of targets at a similar level now with Hemed funnily enough going to QPR, Wells also, Baldock at Reading, Gallagher unattainable. Not saying these were all of interest but they certainly would’ve been starters for us and they’re better than the current 2 at the top of the pitch.

Fletcher is certainly no better than we’ve got. Of the names suggested on here today probably neither is DCL but I’d prefer him.

Frankly I can’t think of anyone to improve our frontline who we’ll sign if we don’t get Hogan so a better plan b is our only option. Now that would be a real shame after all the positivity in the summer and since we beat QPR.

Would still take him as per my previous post. Would offer a lot more goal threat than Washington and (I know it doesn’t matter to some but...) he’s a Blade. He might give us that extra 10% and hit the ground running here.

Millwall fan at work who was there on Saturday says he's totally one footed. If you watch his goal v us he was running down the left and flicked the ball over Hendo with his right foot. Anything on his left is like a back pass according to this lad.

I still don't understand why so many on here feel Gregory wouldn't be good for, or improve Utd - views based it seems mainly on one or two fairly unimpressive performances against Utd in the last couple of seasons . Regardless that he's a big Blade (which I'm sure is a plus in CW's eyes), I thought he was easily Millwall's best player on Sat, always looked a danger and took his goal well (Egan getting nowhere near him for it). He scored again last night and is in good form.

Of course he's not the £10m+, 21 year old future superstar some think/expect Utd should somehow uncover but IMHO he'd improve the front 4 (being a big improvement on Washington) and not only push Sharp for a starting shirt but also weigh-in with a fair few goals when he does get the opportunity. I'm not sure Millwall would sell in Jan especially if they are still hovering in & around the relegation places but for anything up to and around £1.5m I think he'd be definitely worth a go.
