July PL restarts

That is absurd. It can never stick for that long, both for social reasons and practical ones. If enforced that long there will be no country left to govern.

There are already rebellions in parts of Italy as people, who have been in lockdown for three weeks, are running out of food and money. It should also be remembered that the majority of Italy (and the majority of Spain which has been on lockdown for 2 weeks) is unaffected by the crisis.

Looking at all the numbers to date I stand by what I've thought from the start, which is that the very elderly, and people with serious conditions (eg cardiovascular, asthmatics) in the high risk groups should be the ones isolated, and normal life should resume for everyone else. Isolating the high risk groups removes 70% of the hospital bed capacity issues that might arise.

For those who are still wary, social distancing is easy enough to practice at a personal level.

Life should return to normal as soon as possible, whether that's trade, schools, entertainment or football.
😳 wow

Good questions but the PL is a separate body so will initially look after themselves to protect revenue.

Possible no relegation from PL if other leagues are null and void??
Which means Leeds are fucked ... light at the end of the tunnel

Is it really that outrageous for the league to try and play games behind doors in June/July if the peak has ended

yes I get it, we all know what’s happening now but at some point as with everything we need to start dipping our toes back into normality

and if they can do this in as safe an environment as possible and they have checks in place etc then maybe it can have a positive for many people stuck at home

Absolute fantasy stuff. Never going to happen.

As the article suggests you'd need medical services and even one ambulance is one too much. That stops the plan before it starts.

The one line in it that renders it all unworkable is ' If one person catches the virus....'

That is a high probability as the article says you need camera crews, production as well as the squads x 25 and all coaches/physio/medical...talking 1,500-2,000 people.

Also is test kits and medical services for such an event a good use of essentials?

That idea floated is just for the Prem league? What happens to the rest of the leagues? These get canned I assume as no way they can have a set up like that as discussed in the article so no relegation anyway so what's the point of restarting for half the league...say 10th downwards?

Love to see it happening but there's so many reasons it won't.

"The Independent has been told that plans have been drawn up to televise all remaining 92 matches, with a handful on every day over the summer months.

It is this aspect that has drawn increased government backing, too, as they like the idea of the population engrossed in the national sport, especially in the event that lockdown measures are tightened or extended."

If it does gain government backing then it's likely to happen, it could be argued that the overall mood of the nation is worth sacrificing a couple of ambulances for.

At the moment, we don't know what will happen, so clubs could be relegated if the Championship gets played. Surely no club is going to just turn up and go through the motions believing that relegation is cancelled, unless that is 100% confirmed.

The government have promised to support businesses, which I assume will include football clubs, pubs, restaurants etc.

How the hell are the government going to fund that for 18 months? Especially when a significant percentage of the population aren’t working or paying tax, whilst living on government handouts?

Borrow from China.

That's incredible whataboutery. People can be both concerned/appalled/upset/etc about things going on in the world AND also be interested in when football might return (perhaps, to give them some relief from everything else going on in the world). The two things are not mutually exclusive.

It's a football forum. The topic of conversation is going to naturally gravitate towards football.

All discussion so far is based around games actually being played to finish the season and whichever way you come at it this seems a virtual impossibility as has been shown by most of the excellent arguments put forward in this thread. On paper perhaps the most workable option would be to play just the two games required to bring all Premiership teams onto an equal footing then close the season based on positions at that point.
We have played, give or take, 75% of matches which by any standards is a strong representative basis from which calculate a final table based on average points per game played to date.
United for example have a current points per game score of 1.54 (43 points divided by 28 games played). with ten games left to play this would give them 15 more points for a total of 58 points for the season and using the same calculation for all teams in the PL would leave them in sixth place.
A bit simplistic I know and perhaps not a perfect solution but worth consideration given the most unusual and extreme circumstances we are working within.

The problem with that is it does not account for strenght of opponent left.

They wont do that sadly.

It will either be scrapped completely which is most likely or they will wait to play the games out but when it goes past June/July then even that option will end up being removed (wrongly in my opinion).

The Scotland season is already looking like it will be gone...as soon as every top league starts to cancel the season...it will be a domino affect.

It's not worth sacrificing at all. In my opinion - if that ambulance/s could help with genuinelly ill people instead when constraints are already stretched.

There is no way the government will give any backing to anything that takes essential services away for a game of football and rightly so.

Cant see this season being voided even if next season is delayed.
There would be loads of legal challenges if it was.
What's wrong with starting next season say in October or beyond.it may take a few years for normal start date to be achieved wheres the problem in that ?

Provided the situation isn't worse by then. Restart in July behind closed doors over a period of 4 - 6 weeks

Struck a deal with Government apparently

Never mind if it isn't worse by then it needs to be a whole load of significantly better.

Very strange times and I don't think normal business rules and legal contracts will apply. Football is something that there is a strong appetite for and broadly speaking teams aren't bad businesses so when they get running again there will be support for them as a commodity. It makes no sense for creditors to foreclose on clubs because they will be destroying their cash cows. A new normality will derive during which I feel players and other key staff will have to have massively reduced wages for a while anyway. This is a global issue so what are they going to do? Have a hissy fit and go play somewhere else? Everywhere else including other countries will be in the same strife.

You only need read the news to see some younger apparently healthy people are dying or being seriously hit by this thing. My conscience would not be clear expecting teams and individuals to be effectively forced into a close contact sport. Ok so you can test the teams and other staff before say a behind closed doors match is played but what if there are contaminated surfaces in the grounds that they're touching, this thing can hang around for up to 72hrs where some infected person touched something. Also some eejits will have private house parties to watch the match or because players can have a game think it safe to have a kick around in the park. We've seen that the idiotic minority can't be trusted with sensible measures so we're all having to put up with draconian ones.

As I said above I think current legal situations will be totally out of the window. Any individual or organization pressing for some recompenses will be viewed as petty and may reflect badly back on them. I think many debts and clauses will be written off because it is in nobody's longer term financial interest to destroy football.

Honestly? If they play it behind closed doors, then:

  • How may ambulances do you think are going to be taken out of action for a football match at any given time
  • How many times is said ambulance going to be required due to a time-critical incident directly relating to coronaplague
  • Given the first bottleneck on the NHS during coronaplague is going to be access to ventilators etc, what good is it going to be to rush said time-critical patient to hospital if they're all in use?

I get what you're saying but frankly playing games will have a greater overall health benefit to the nation than not when you factor in mental health issues

Mental health problems will be a massive issue if this carries on for 2more month's, they will need more hospitals, clinics, call it what you want to deal with the depression and all the issues what go with it!!

How many ambulances? At least one per game is required. That's one too many for a just in case scenario at a sporting event but clubs won't play without one there.

How many times is an ambulance going to be required for a corona related reason?

Don't know but if it's just once then that ambulance is surely better being used for that than a football reason? Judging by the number of ambulances I am hearing on the main road where I live these services are incredibly busy.

As for your final point...if there are no ventilators left at a certain hospital or area then the country will be in such a state that there is no way football or normal life will be ready to resume and we will all (including footballers still be on lockdown).

Also, if that was a relative who collapsed with symptoms (have one myself in another part of the UK who did this week and has got coronavirus) imagine you ringing up for an ambulance and them saying sorry there are no ventilatiors where we are at the moment so we are not going to send an ambulance yet? They still have to be dealt with and treated.

As I have said love football to come back and these festival of Football ideas sound great in principle but it ain't happening for a long, long time.

I have readied myself for them cancelling the season (in theory Sky/BT don't pay out then) and clubs should give us our season ticket money back which creates major problems for a club like us who've signed players on the back of that TV money. I am more worried about that on us than any prospect of not getting into Europe but then other clubs like Villa would be completely screwed but get another shot at it next year also.

I'm sure the Premier League can buy a few ambulances if the government/NHS see them being used for football as an issue. As for the paramedics who would need to be present at the match, again the Premier League can use medical staff from the private sector or more likely the medical staff already employed by football clubs.

We're talking about the Premier League losing £762m! They'll easily find the money needed to get the matches on.

That's the main reason the (sky money )season will be completed even if it is late autumn before games are played.
No reason why next season cant start later.
Seasons would be out of sink for a few years .Getting to normal in the near future.
Season is being interrupted for world cup so it wont be a first.

If reports that the season has to be completed before 16th July in order to comply with broadcasting contracts are true, I would be surprised if the season isn’t completed by then.

When there is £752m at risk the league and clubs will get it done.

I think at the clubs meeting this week it will be agreed that players take a pay cut (similar to what has happened on Italy).

I would move all fixtures to a couple of stadiums, for example Old Trafford and The Etihad (City never play at the etihad and Man U never play at Old Trafford) one game is played at each stadium every day.

Every club, officials and broadcasting crew lives out of hotels for the full duration of the “season”. They are under lockdown, only exceptions are games and training (similar to a boxers fight camp)

Everyone involved (players, staff, coach drivers etc) are all tested.

Ambulances, paramedics, security etc can all be privately hired to avoid being a drain on public services.

there are 92 games remaining. It would take 46 days (6 weeks 4 days) to complete all of the games.

Everyone involved would be away from their families for this time but they would be incentivised to do this to regain their wages which will inevitably be reduced after this weeks meeting.

Just been announced that the prem CAN NOT unilaterally scrap the season,According to Yorkshire live and other reports coming through they have to be an agreement with all the other leagues before it can be scraped and all the other leagues have voted this season must be finished.Interesting.

And what happens when just one person gets sick?

The TV deals can surely be negotiated. It's not in the TV companies interests for clubs to die.

If people honestly think life will be be close to normal in 6 months....what's the rush?

As I said what 's it matter if we have to wait 12 months? So much easier to postpone the start of next season than to try and scrap the 30 games of this season that have already been played. There would be so much hassle scrapping games that have been played than scrapping games that have not been played. That way no club loses anything that they have already got.

Are people really that weak minded? It’s not like I’m chained to a radiator in Lebanon or in solitary on Rikers Island.

Plenty of people will be fine but it's wishful thinking to suggest there won't be a big surge in mental health issues.

I'm not sure behind closed doors football is going to help with any mental health issues that are coming.
