Do you not think that mid-table clubs like Burnley, Palace, Everton, Newcastle and Southampton would rather complete the current season?

That way they get this season’s £100M (or whatever) + an almost certain guarantee of next season’s Premier League money + an outside chance of Europe next season in some cases.

Why would this group of clubs agree to abandon the season and Millions of pounds?

Sky won’t be paying out for an abandoned season. They will have to pay out when it finishes (I.e. whenever it’s safe to do so)
The tv companies who like it or not hold a gun to the heads of clubs in the prem. They would surely not go away quietly from agreements formed between the prem and them selves.Completing the season would help problems arising from the season being scraped by giving them what they have paid for which is a full season of prem football even if it finishes 12 months late. Then next season we can see what would be the best way forward after knowing how things stand at the time.Lets not try to cross bridges until we get to them. Also don't forget other sponsors who have put their money into the season so far what would they think?Would they want their money back ?

These tests; anyone who has the test and is found to have the antibody in their system should be allowed out. Be that the shops or park or work or whatever. Assume I have the antibody, I'm not saying I'm going to put others at risk, but those without the antibody, and have had the test, should use their common sense and stay in,like we currently are. And I know this open to people claiming to have the antibody despite not. But this can be sorted with a pass card when the test is completed, for example.

Im still of the opinion that this is getting those with underlying issues. Yesterday, all but 13 had underlying issues. The 13 were all healthy by all accounts. Only a post mortem could tell for definite.

If football games are played in front of a crowd of 1000 who have passed the test then so be it. Test all footballers and staff first.

There are many holes to be picked in my argument, so feel free. I'm just trying to play devil's advocate and trying to get life back to as normal as possible as quickly as possible.

Better than not finishing it at all.

I listened to Off the Ball on Radio Scotland at lunchtime (worth a listen - about Scottish football primarily but quite funny too) and an expert on there dropped out that he thinks it will be October before life is fully back to normal.
If the programme is about Scottish football it cant be on more than 10 minutes can it ..... Scottish football 🤣🤣

Curtailed season back in the news again today. All teams to have played 29 games. Talking about behind closed doors games of Villa vs Blades and City v Arsenal. Then final positions as of 29 games.

Realistically:-

Finish Premier League season first. Max 10 games. 2 games per week. 5 weeks
Finish FA cup Max 3 games. 2 weeks
Finish Euro competitions. QF onwards being one game on a neutral ground. Max 4 games. 2 weeks.

The full current season can be completed in 9 weeks. Most teams will get a 4 week break between seasons. Plenty of time to organise the fixtures etc.
FA cup teams will get two weeks break. Any team in both a Euro and FA cup final might not get a break but they have already had a long rest period and teams in that category have massive squads and can cope anyway.

So the new season starts 9 weeks later than the current one has restarted.

No League Cup. No League Trophy. No International breaks.

Play 2 games a week and get 38 games done in 19 weeks.

Grand total to complete 2 league seasons is 28 weeks. 7 months. The restart could be in November and there would still be time before the International Euros.

If the restart is any earlier than November there would be time for a shortened FA Cup and Euro Cups next season also.

If it’s any later than November the second league season might need to be halved.

Any flaws in that plan?

maybe. but that depends on the virus. because eddie hearn said about boxing. in a interview with Costello & Bunce. he said he was willing to forgo many things to keep a show on. but as soon as there was going to be no medical help. the shows would be postponed until further notice but he hinted maybe look at when olympics would've started at very earliest.

thats the same with football. its all hands on deck. even retired NHS are being asked to comeback. so we cant & it would never pass health & safety to be playing football if there are no ambulances, doctors or space in hospitals if injuries take place. if lets say someone breaks the legs the club in house medics would have to treat them

but i always say if any season should be cancelled it is next season

Looked at link, saw whole headline was in quotes and from the Express, assumed it to be contentless bollocks

Spoke with an Agent last week who seemed to know that the "summer" transfer window was going to run until October

It will be great to get the season finished even if it’s behind closed doors, however I really cannot see there being any European football next season.

Qualifying for Europe usually starts June/July but I cannot see travel between countries being allowed by then.

Uefa already have a massive headache of trying to conclude this seasons competitions, so I don’t imagine they will commit to another season, or
consider delaying it, when some countries may not even yet be experiencing the full impact of the coronavirus. Plus, we just don’t know if/when the 2nd or 3rd wave of this thing will hit us.

What a shame it would be to miss out if under normal circumstances we’d have qualified. But that seems irrelevant at the minute with what is going on, stay safe & best wishes fellow blades.

We are waiting to see if China gets a second wave of cases, cases in Italy are peaking according to experts and we will be watching Italy too. I think there are so many people who have had the virus without realising it because this one seems to be very catching . You and I may have already have had it. We are still waiting for evidence that the virus will affect you again even if you already have had it and your body fought against it.

Yes we are waiting for evidence and waiting for various tests and waiting for a vaccine. All things that won't happen quickly. Certainly not for the vast majority of the population for a long time.

Yes, the minute one player has the virus. Everything is postponed again and then the whole thing is up in tatters.

Bullshit.

Tell us how they get games going ahead for any consistent period of time when as soon as one player catches it - which will happen -then it all shuts down for 7-14 days and then during the time the likeilhood is it will have been passed onto someone else in the team, an official someone they have played against - then another 7-14 days? Without a vaccine - they say at least a year - then not sure how they escape this cycle?

To basically get football back running consistently, it relies on nobody in a whole employment catching it (the minute they do - that team/squad go into quarantine) which is not going to happen (just look at the number of players/officials that have symptoms or some form of it). As I say teams will use it also to their advantage - who is going to say they are making it up - would seem unethical to say teams or players are not being honest? Whos going to adminster any tests - Premier League officials? Its open to all sorts of loopholes when teams dont want to play the season out (which about a third to a half of the Prem I would say)

Not seen anyone answer how the above can be resolved yet whether they have the feast of football or play games in quick successon - it matters little - it all goes like dominoes as soon as one person has even symptoms really. As others then have to self isolate also. So further postponements ensure and then delays etc.

I really hope I am wrong and we are back playing before the end of 2020 (the year) but I think it is highly unlikely and agree the 18 month figure for the 2021-22 season seems more realistic. The notion of games played under closed doors this summer is a lovely notion but the facts are it would be a farce for the reasons I have explained above. The latest briefing from the Govt suggest that the lockdowns in some form could go on for 6 months - or before we get back to normal. To even have one ambulance at a football match is a waste of one ambulance. How can they have any football if they cant have an ambulance there? You would have to have emergency services there. That is not a priority.

Just my opinion and as I say hope I am wrong as means we will get back to some sort of normality quicker and that includes football!

We will see

Harries - Six months before we can review
Paul Brand from ITV News asks Dr Harries if current measures in place will continue beyond three weeks.
She points out the UK has only had one week of the measure and that the prime minister said the situation would be "reviewed" after the three weeks.
But she adds it would be "quite dangerous" to then revert to normal life.
"If we stop then all of our efforts will be wasted," she adds.
She says that measures may be reduced gradually over time.
Dr Harries says it might be two or three months before we see the longer-term impact, and about three to six months before to see "at which point we can actually get back to normal".
"And it is plausible it could go further than that", she adds.

How is that going to be any different if they scrap the current season and start a new one?

You mentioned playing again in 6 months+ previously which fits in with the rough timescale I’ve suggested.

Now you seem to be saying that no games can be played again until the virus is completely eradicated?

The key point is there needs to be some flexibility built in and next season may need to be shortened if necessary.

But no clubs will suffer from next season being reduced as it hasn’t even started yet.

Six months until we can even tell if we can start going back to normal.

There won't be any football in July.

I agree if they play any football at any point even a year- 18 months they should finish this season. they wont as the majority will want it canned (only 14 needed for this decision remember) but as others have said it could be 6 months before the society gets back to any kind of normality not football restarting.

I will be stunned if we ever see this season completed in any capacity and pleasantly surprised as it will mean there has been huge developments in testing, vaccines and some control to the virus spreading but these things are a long time away.

I dont think they will start a new one either.

My point is I dont think there will be any football sustainable for more than a few weeks if they tried to restart. Not sure the virus will be eradictaed completely but in terms of future games and sport, these will be right at the bottom of the pile and rightly so. The experts have said social distancign will continue in some form for 18 months and that is why with sport being so low down in priorities of any return to normal life will see essential areas prioritised first in coming back (Schools/other services/essental industry/supply chains). Maybe they may get some games in under closed doors in a years time but again it would be like a 10 game season -unless they change the schedule but they have planned the Euros for next summer now. That is why I feel 2021-22 is more realistic. Hope I am wrong but it aint coming back in July that is for sure.

Sunday times claiming lockdown until June and social distancing after that into the autumn.

Thats not what the Deputy Chief Medical Officer said. She "warned" it could carry on till June and added "I am not saying we will have a lockdown till June". She was estimating we would be in same place China is now end of June. Reviewed every three weeks. I reckon end of May.

Why is this not possible for us ? This is China.

If football is gone for 18 months, we can kiss bye bye to 80% of the clubs in the league at a minimum. How do Port Vale (picking a random example) survive paying staff and players (all contracted) with no gate reciepts or season ticket sales for months and months?

If that sort of social distancing is in place for 18 months we can kiss bye bye to 80% of pubs.

If nurseries are closed for 18 months we can kiss bye bye to 100% of my sanity :)

As per my post earlier I don’t think 14 teams will want the season canned and kiss goodbye to this season’s TV money.

Bearing in mind the teams in the top half are guaranteed a larger slice of the cake.

Obviously football should only resume when it’s safe to do so. The best thing that the football authorities could do is confirm that the current season will be completed at all levels before any other football is played.

That would take all the pressure off to set crazy, unrealistic deadlines which then have to be revised.

Fitting 9 weeks worth of matches in before Euro 2021 looks like a much more achievable possibility and that’s the only target that needs to be set for the moment. Anything else should be seen as a bonus.

The government have promised to support businesses, which I assume will include football clubs, pubs, restaurants etc.

How the hell are the government going to fund that for 18 months? Especially when a significant percentage of the population aren’t working or paying tax, whilst living on government handouts?

quite frankly I don't trust anything a dictatorship says

Unless we change tact and go for the herd immunity and accept people will die (not gonna happen) then I think June is just wishful thinking.
We don’t know enough about the virus for a start and if you can transmit it without showing symptoms yourself as some people have stated then we are up shit creek until an effective vaccine is produced.
If we ban all international travel and quarantine the Uk until we have no new cases at all then we might even finish this season next year.

No medical training but as the virus continues to spread , herd immunity will happen anyway , no stopping it just an attempt to keep the peak down a bit.

Some of the the inhuman selfish reactions on here confirm my view that a large percentage of posters on this forum would have made excellent SS death camp guards.

People are dying in their hundreds but waiting until July for football to resume is a bit of a hardship for you...

Well some Blades will want to collect their Wednesday relegation winnings. Can't do that if the season is voided.
