July PL restarts

Looking at all the numbers to date I stand by what I've thought from the start, which is that the very elderly, and people with serious conditions (eg cardiovascular, asthmatics) in the high risk groups should be the ones isolated, and normal life should resume for everyone else. Isolating the high risk groups removes 70% of the hospital bed capacity issues that might arise.
This is pretty much what I said from the off, isolating the vulnerable and their carers would prevent the massive upsets to education, the inevitable recession and the general mayhem that this pandemic has caused. The carers who actually have to be there not the managers or any BSers like that get a massive pay incentive (which will still be a minute fraction of what the country saves financially). Is it achievable though? Is there enough infrastructure to support this? Maybe not this time but these things are going to become a more regular occurrence so prepare for it.

Agree Ricky but better than becoming null and void don't you think?
I agree with you .Safety has to come first not just for the fans but the players to.If as West Ham and Villa want the season was to be made void it would be a hammer blow for most clubs. Not just for the Liverpools of this world but for the small clubs to.West Ham and all those in a relegation fight would welcome it being scraped for obvious reasons. What would happen to the TV money that most clubs rely on?Even in the lower leagues clubs finances would be slashed.Clubs like ours would also be hit really hard and it would be so unfair after all the hard work they have put in to the season and the money they have spent. So yes it is so important the season is finished as long as it is safe.

What's is the chance that clubs like Villa and West Ham will suddenly have lots of players in isolation once its announced the season is ready to restart. They will claim they are unable to continue and eventually the season will be scrapped...

What's it matter if we have to wait 3 months or 12 months for football to resume? What I think is important is that it resumes when it is safe and all the games that have been played are not scraped.Far more appropriate and easier to scrap the start of next season than scrap the two thirds of games this season.

Well that's what they are hoping for.

In what sense are players at any serious risk in this, apart from having to miss a week or two of training because they've got a cough and a high temperature?

Well just like the rest of us mixing with others is not a good idea for them and us.How can you tackle some one when you should be 2 meters away from others un less you have legs like Crouch. 😂

That is absurd. It can never stick for that long, both for social reasons and practical ones. If enforced that long there will be no country left to govern.

There are already rebellions in parts of Italy as people, who have been in lockdown for three weeks, are running out of food and money. It should also be remembered that the majority of Italy (and the majority of Spain which has been on lockdown for 2 weeks) is unaffected by the crisis.

Looking at all the numbers to date I stand by what I've thought from the start, which is that the very elderly, and people with serious conditions (eg cardiovascular, asthmatics) in the high risk groups should be the ones isolated, and normal life should resume for everyone else. For those who are still wary, social distancing is easy enough to practice at a personal level.

Life should return to normal as soon as possible, whether that's trade, schools, entertainment or football.

They've quoted 12 weeks for a while now.

The Gvt aren't going to lockdown the country for weeks on end if they don't think it's necessary.

Because if we wait 12 months, many many clubs will go bust.

The trade off, and indeed the arguments surrounding a lot of the lockdown is whether the number of lives saved versus the number of livelihoods destroyed and the economic damage is worth it. The government is facing a very difficult decision in how to balance that.

I thought it would be July, or late June at the very earliest, and playing behind closed doors seems like the only sensible option, sadly.

I have already given up on seeing any more games in the flesh this season anyway.

The main thing is the season being finished, however it happens. It simply would not be fair to deny teams their just rewards, at either end of the table.
My non league team, in Step 4, were top of the league after 28 games, with one of the smallest budgets in the - wait for it - Bet Victor Southern League Central Division One. Null and voiding the whole season feels like a proper kick in the bollocks. If it's being done at non-league level, I'd do it at all levels. But the £££ talks, I guess.

No way behind closed doors. What’s the point. Just hold off until we can all go again. What is the rush for it to be done anyway.

I do agree with you ,it is going to be hard no matter which way they jump.A number of clubs would go bust if they scrap the season now because most money that is payed to them depends on how they finished in the season just gone. Also as you say can some clubs keep going as things stand at this moment in time with the general shut down and the long wait to continue? As you say saving lives is top priority but no matter which way they go it is going to be very hard to survive for some clubs.May be the prem will have to look at the obscene wages they are paying some players while this crisis continues .

Not for closed behind doors

Said it before no chance of games being played for a long, long time.

Even behind closed doors.

It's fantasy land from those thinking it possible.

As others have said let's say they schedule them in June which is ridiculously ambitious when this thing is not going to plateau for quite a while. Lets say then they restart and someone gets it who is connected to games (25 players and 25 odd officials per club= 50 x 20=1,000 involved just in the Prem...chances are someone will get it). Then what the whole thing shuts down as any games they gave played will see that pool of players and officials self isolating and their next game is postponed. Then what we have another round of 2 weeks called off...Then inevitably someone also we gets it from that pool of people a bit later on this delaying another week of games?

I would not be surprised if the teams at the bottom manipulate it too ( West Ham and Brighton all announced lots have symptoms this week) to ensure the season does not finish. Lets say there is a game left and Norwich ard relegated and they say we have a player with CV symptoms so we are all self isolating then the game and season can't be finished? Teams will do this no matter how immoral due to the vast cash involved in staying up.

Please don't give me this talk of all players then should be tested then every week. What a waste of testing kits and resources on something non essential ...ditto for an ambulance that would need to be at every game in case of injury.

I really want this season to finish and think it should but it won't be in June or any time around then. When? I don't know. Maybe when things have really slowed down they can look at it but I worry that won't be for a very long time.

As for the discussion on the season finishing...if you read social media the majority want it canned (selfish reasons I know from fans of teams near the bottom of divisions or hate Liverpool) but in the Prem who actually stands to gain from finishing the last few games? Liverpool, Leicester, Chelsea and maybe us/Wolves? The rest will be delighted to annul it. Every bottom half team and likes of Arse, Man Utd and Spurs will be know they wont do as bad again.

Regardless of player contracts/kit/sponsor deals running out end of June...I think sadly for SUFC (Liverpool, Leeds and a few others) that if/when this thing goes into May..and June then the Premier League will meet and the 14 clubs needed to make a majority will vote to bin it all. There will be a few legal fights and compensation may be given financially but I think sadly it will be inevitable the whole season including all cup competitions will just get wiped out.

I would not be happy but I would be more surprised if it does not go down that route now looking at what the experts are saying in terms of the virus. For the reasons I stated I just can't see any games played even under closed doors for 6 months+

Fans being allowed in Stadiums will be at least a year I feel going on everything I have read; probably 18 months and 2021-22 season start is the most realistic with what the experts are saying on social distancing. Essential services will be reintroduced first when we come out of lockdown/s....Football and Sport congregations will be the last thing lifted.

Hope I am wrong and we get out of this soon. The bonus of Football coming back and us attending games at some point next season would be a great lift for fans but as I have said at the moment just does not seem important.

Above may be seen as a negative stance but it's also realistic. Those thinking they can get games on in June/July then as I gave said what happens when...rather than if...one player/official contracts the virus?

Yep. Exactly what would happen. Teams will do everything at the bottom to get this season scrapped snd sadly it eventually will be banned. They only need 14 clubs to agree and I feel they will get this figure easily.

No need for a marathon reply! There will be a lot more deaths from the economy crash than the virus if the lockdown goes on too long and that is a fact! We were very badly prepared for this and the NHS have been telling the government for years that we need more money and staff. The government is finally waking up.

Is this serious? If someone gets it...they have to self isolate...then do do others who have been near then...it's a domino affect. As I have said one player gets it...the whole lot is postponed.

Money talks. The PL season will be finished behind closed doors and the prize money can still be distributed. The European qualifiers will take their place when European football restarts.

The cost to test each player/individual around the game (behind closed doors) will be minimal to each club. I think this is the way it’ll go when readily available to purchase tests later this summer imo.

I agree on your points on the Govt and the NHS.

I saw some graphs on social distancing v figures for the virus albeit projections. If we came out if the lockdown in a month v two months or three months and the difference was astronomical and frightening in terms of people contracting the virus and deaths.

Provided the situation isn't worse by then. Restart in July behind closed doors over a period of 4 - 6 weeks

Struck a deal with Government apparently

When we got promoted many fans said one downside will be the long wait between matches when we're in the PL. I'm not sure this is quite what we had in mind.

Then what happens to the lower leagues who can't afford this. Do these leagues cancel and what happens to relegation from the leagues Prem downwards?

Good questions but the PL is a separate body so will initially look after themselves to protect revenue.

Possible no relegation from PL if other leagues are null and void??

I think you are being realistic and no matter how much you want the season to restart and no matter how much I wish you to be wrong I to could see that happening.Just one thing I would disagree on is I think being two thirds into the season would be wrong to totally scrap it.No matter how long we have to wait I think after all the money spent by fans tv companies in the expense of putting on a match for clubs it should be completed.I think it would be so much easier delaying next season than scraping this season with all the reprecusions that could follow.

We are waiting to see if China gets a second wave of cases, cases in Italy are peaking according to experts and we will be watching Italy too. I think there are so many people who have had the virus without realising it because this one seems to be very catching . You and I may have already have had it. We are still waiting for evidence that the virus will affect you again even if you already have had it and your body fought against it.

Null and Voiding is the likeliest outcome, But The PL will have to pay back Millions to the broadcasters around the world hitting clubs hard in their pockets.

The giants of the EPL would be able to take the hit but a lot of clubs like ours will see their business plans ripped up and binned. We are going to look back at this in years to come as the biggest what might have been in our history.

If what you say is the case, we can kiss goodbye to football in this country as it has been historically for good. There will be no clubs left. Think of how many businesses will die linked to clubs.

We'll end up with a US type system with big regional clubs driven solely by TV, and then very local and youth teams. Best we can hope for is the Steel City Wotsits to follow.

The government is trying to balance and flatten the curve of this to protect the NHS. At some point this curve will be managed and bits of society will get back to some degree of normality.

Otherwise we will kill our economy, there will not be a single restaurant or pub in existence if a lockout lasts the sort of time you're suggesting, not to mention the civil issues we'd get.

Do you not think that mid-table clubs like Burnley, Palace, Everton, Newcastle and Southampton would rather complete the current season?

That way they get this season’s £100M (or whatever) + an almost certain guarantee of next season’s Premier League money + an outside chance of Europe next season in some cases.

Why would this group of clubs agree to abandon the season and Millions of pounds?

Sky won’t be paying out for an abandoned season. They will have to pay out when it finishes (I.e. whenever it’s safe to do so)
