He’s pretty basic. But with Femi’s injury record and the fact Gilchrist is learning the ropes still, it’s probably a wise one

Gilchrist to centre half, with another centre half to come would be the hope. That’s then 2 in every position.

I’m not classing Shackelele as obviously he comes in as first choice in every position he can play 👍

So if this fella is correct, club to club negotiations haven't started yet

Personal terms are generally agreed before transfer fees are discussed & usually take the longest time. Sounds to me like it’s all but sorted, especially if he’s told his parent club that he wants to leave.

I've had a bit of a slating at times for giving my views on Gilchrist.

I didn't watch yesterday's game, but noted several comments to the effect of "Gilchrist gave his man way too much room... We moved Hamer to the right to give Gilchrist's side more protection etc.."

Given his attacking output is negligible, at best, I haven't seen a good reason to give him any minutes where Serki (our own young talent) is available.

This signing might suggest that Wilder doesn't have full confidence at RB either.

I don't mind the idea of Gilchrist staying around, he'll get plenty of minutes covering / rotating in the backline, but we shouldn't consider him as our No.1 CB partner for Anel. He isn't physically commanding enough and lacks experience.

Don’t mind Gilchrist as a defensive FB
Issue of course is as an attacking FB he doesn’t yet offer enough hence Seriki

My other issue is I don’t believe Alfie is a readymade CB. Not commanding enough in the air for me

I know 27 is no age at all, but I'm surprised to see he's that old. Still, only a year older that Egan was when he joined us, so certainly not a big deal.

Missed that cheers. So 3.5 yrs which is more realistic
The other links did say 4.5 years to be fair but the German journalist does seem to be quite reliable so possibly the original one got it wrong. Doubt we'd give anyone over 3.5 year contract.

I don't see JJK walking straight into the team, so my money is on Gilchrist continuing as first choice RB for now. Yes this signing gives us the option of moving Gilchrist inside, but I would be amazed if we don't sign another physically imposing CB as well.

RB is one position where we have lacked depth all season, partly due to injuries. Seriki has had two injuries already and only just returned from the latest. Plus if rumours are true we might not be seeing Shackleton again for some time.

We needed another specialist RB in the squad, so all things considered I think this will be a good signing.

He's played most of his career in either the PL or Bundesliga 1 so he's obviously a decent player. Sounds a bit Baldockesque to me if I can date compare him to George. Aggressive and determined and pitches in with a few assists too. I think he'll become first choice RB in a few weeks if he signs and should add more quality down that side.

High praise indeed

Could be a move to allow Gilchrist to play centre back, which is his natural position.
think thats exactly what were doing jjk and seriki for rb gilchrist an option for cb wouldnt suprise me if we either went to a back 3 or play anel left side in a 4 with gilchrist at rcb

Looks like some early planning for next season with this, Gilchrist isn't going to be here long term unless we fork out a decent bit of cash for him, Chelsea don't sell their youth on the cheap.

With Seriki and JJK, we'll have 2 good RB's when the transfer window opens this summer, Seriki who can probably make the step up if he continues developing the way he is, and JJK who has plenty of top flight experience even if he has hit his ceiling already.

Unless we can do some sort of deal for Kyle Walker in the summer (depending on what happens with him this January), you could say that we've got both RB and LB sorted for next season already.

I agree. I would be slightly concerned if our only centre half cover for the remainder of the season is Alfie. I think he would be ok as the right sided centre half of a three but I just don't think he has the physicality or height in a two.

So if we are getting JJK, which seems likely I hope we are still after another centre half who's physically imposing, dominant in the air and good on the deck, someone like Virgil Van Dyke 🥲

I’m not sure on this one.

Looks to be a decent player and £800k is nothing if the new owners even have a good championship budget for this January, but I don’t think we need a RB, especially one who’s not a premier league player.
