Given the 26 man squad, with 25 who are 21 and over, for any January additions there would have to be departures. Otherwise we’d be paying a senior pro a full wage to not play.

Who are your candidates?

Keeper - can’t see any movement there.

Defence - if Wilder doesn’t fancy McGuinness then I’m you can imagine us open to offloading him once more. Tanganga, for me his contract still worries me. Surely this is the last chance to maximise his value and replace with a player on a longer deal? Conversely Seriki and Burrows also move into final 18 months so they must be vulnerable if we don’t make headway.

Midfield - having effectively made the no confidence list, you’d say Rothwell and Jairo could be vulnerable. As he’s persevered with Choudhury through a difficult spell, you’d imagine when right backs are readily available he might be in the mix for midfield. I’m sure we’d be open for Chong too.

Forwards - this is an interesting one. Can’t see Bamford, Ayew and BBD off anywhere. But teams pushing may fancy Cannon in the same way we did and with money for the stand and Dore needed, it may be a sensible move in my opinion especially if whatever chance we do this window still doesn’t kick him on too much. I don’t see him ever being worth any more than what we paid. You’d also have to say Campbell could be offloaded but who’d take him?

Any thoughts?

My guess is we wont be moving on anyone that's signed during any of Wilder's tenures. He'll persist with them regardless of form.

Listening to bettis' interview I don't think we'll actively be trying to sell anyone of our established players now we've got the highest earners off the books. We'll listen to sensible offers for Chong, McGuinness & Tanganga but I can't see why anyone would be making offers for them.

As usual the threat will be youth players, mainly Peck & Seriki. I just can't see whose desperate for those players that is capable of meeting our valuations in the January window. they're both critical to us but do they get in any team at the top of the championship? Both are probably too old to move to the EPL at this point.

I could see a weird Lankshear style sale of someone like Sidibe, Betts or one of the other 18-19yo doing well at the moment.

Good players, signing for desperate/stupid teams in January come with a premium (see Cannon. T). If we get bids of that type in January then I see no reason why players wouldn't be sold.

Hull, Ipswich, Coventry etc. Then maybe Boro, Wolves, Southampton etc. Especially if they pick up an injury like Boro did with Hackney last season

McGuinness out Souttar in would be my guess, plus one loan in.

Shackleton to be not registered in the 25 with a view to getting him a new club.

As the squad of 25 is only submitted after the window closes, this seems nonsensical

To clarify, what I meant was at the start of January we tell him and his agent “ you’re out of contract at the end of the season and we won’t be renewing, and in order to bring someone else in, you won’t be registered at the end of the window, so it’s in your own best interest to find yourself a new club in this window where you can play some football”.

That's fine. Likely his best interest would be to sit on his existing contract, and we can't use him as a result

If he did do that (and therefore play no football), he’d likely not get another club after us. Having had two years out injured and then a season not playing, I can’t see any team taking him.

It would be in his interest to go somewhere (even on loan) to prove he can play regularly so that someone in leagues one or two offer him a contract after ours. If he goes on loan he still earns the same money.

Anyone we have left who is any good and attracts the right bid will go.

Ignore what Bettis said. Watch what they actually do.

Cooper and Peck will attract interest.

I'd certainly expect Peck to go. Maybe Seriki if he's played for a consistent spell before the window.

If we want to change Tanganga, you would expect there to be interest. Millwall might even cough up to bolster a promotion push if they're near the top.
Same with Burrows.

Otherwise do we have anyone people would want? Maybe Cooper but he's been inconsistent and injured over a 5yr spell.

agree deffo loosing out of contract players
we won't offer them better deals aka Brooks
so expect at least two of Cooper Seriki and Burrows
to be sold before they become frees
and they will jump quick if we get a points deduction

I’d say there are probably three lists:

1. Players other clubs want and we wouldn’t ideally lose.

2. Players we want to lose but I’d be surprised if others want them.

3. Players 20,000 fans wouldn’t mind we sell, that Stoke want but the manager doesn’t want to sell!

Barring a remarkable uptick in individual & team performances between now and Jan, I don't really see any of our players being if significant interest to anyone who might be in the market by then. Maybe we loan a few youth prospects out for some exposure to first team football, but otherwise we'll likely be waiting things out to the summer, when some contracts expire and we can get fresh blood in.

Peck
Femi
Cooper

And with that will go any player worth anything either of meaningful contributions wise or financial

Does the last week of August actually count as Summer? To give credit where it’s due we can be extremely speedy at organising outgoing transfers. Brooks gone before Wilder could complete his holiday sesh. Maybe he should unplug the fax machine before he goes next time

As it should be. The issue is that we’re dreadful at doing the next bit which is having replacements identified with deals lined up.
That’s the thing.

“You can’t just keep selling assets”

You can. But you also have to bring assets in.

Money is money.

Choudhury on 50k per week on a free for a year is 2.5m.

Ayew on apparently 500k for a year.

That’s 3m.

Could have paid 1.5m to Boreham Wood for Abdulmalik and paid him probably 10k per week at first on a three year deal.

We chose the former option. Same spend. Apart from the fact that for 2 years you’d have an asset that could grow, that you could sell and let’s be honest, very unlikely to lose value.

Don’t tell me the owners wouldn’t sanction such an acquisition when the exact same money goes on two players who will not be here in a year (unless Choudhury accepts a revised wage, which I wouldn’t be against as a DM).

But there’s the rub. The reaction is often as if there was no choice. That’s just one example I thought was realistic. Unless Ayew is a no 10 (he isn’t really) or a pacey winger (again, not really) then he’s just a general body in the forwards. Choudhury is fine if he’s an alternative to Riedewald. Not sure we needed both. He’s certainly not a right back.

If you sell any scraps of quality, the remaining half decent players will also want out. No one wants to be sort of an understocked squad that's effectively hung out to dry.

Hoping we can get rid of players such as..

Campbell
Doherty
Shackleton
Ayew

*I know... who would want them? But we have to try.

And bring in some younger players that are more available.

Also wouldnt be against sending BBD back and using that loan spot from a prem winger.

In reality I can see burrows, One sold.

More than likely though no outs and 1 loan in (depending where we are in league).

Wilder will probably still push for McGuinness to leave but id keep him for now until end of the season (unless we hsve s replacement lined up), hes doing a job filling in when required and odd 10/20 off the bench.

If we sell Cooper I fear the worst. Without his performances this season we’d be rock bottom
