CONFIRMED Iliman Ndiaye to Marseille

McBurnie's message to Iliman on his personal Insta post saying goodbye to the Blades was class, as was so many other of our players and ex-players. He was clearly much loved on and off the pitch. I wonder how this will effect Coulibaly as he seemed to have quite a tight bond with Iliman.

Good luck to the lad. I wish him every success in his career. This day was always going to happen whether we stayed up or not.

I genuinely think the kid couldn’t make his mind up. It’s done us no favours whatsoever but I think we very nearly got him to stay. Which in itself shows how invested in us he had become.

Marseille’s Bettis equivalent blatantly played the game and used his emotional attachment to OM in their favour. Seen all sorts of rumours ranging from his Dad getting a bung to OM using blackmailing tactics. Guess we’ll never know on that front.

I’m gutted and feel full of sorrow, which I thought I was way too old for. He was too good for us. Way too good. Looking back at last season it feels like the majority of games I went to just watch him. He made all the other players look so average. Yeah I know “why can’t we sustain success with more of these players”. I dunno - we just can’t/won’t. Or maybe we will. I’m waffling now.

I’m not gonna let a few jobless internet mongs make me hate Marseille. Iliman was simply sublime so they’re my new French team.
Beautifully put mate, that's where my sorrow stems from partly as well.

Even looking at an Illy highlight reel at this point is torturous. What class, creativity, threat, magic. Always making something happen, or looking to make something happen. I genuinely don't think I'll see another like him here, in my lifetime.

I agree with almost all of your post, apart from the last bit. I wish Illy every success in the world, but fuck Marseille and fuck their fans. I'll be cheering him on, not them. The bitter spiteful streak in me is waiting for the moment he leaves them, and then on to Twitter I'll go with comments of CRY MORE 🔴⚪⚔️🌪️

😂

I feel the same about those highlight reels. They are my pet hate and the worst possible way of judging a player, but I've literally never seen one like Ndiaye's. If he was a twat, it would make it so much easier to see him go, but he wasn't just the best player I've seen, he was also one of the most likeable characters.

This feels like when I split up with my girlfriend but worse a lot worse

Disappointed he's gone but if Hecky can bring a couple of players in with the money then it's not all bad. At least he didn't go to Forest now that would have pissed me off

I've said before, I do think there is some sort of underlying idea amongst a significant chunk of our fanbase that we are in some sense "special" to players, in a way that other clubs aren't. You see it a lot on the social media stuff...up until fairly recently John Brayford still got praise from blades, with the old "once a Blade, lad!" being trotted out. More recently it happened with Dean Henderson, with fans imploring him to "come home" etc etc.

Some of it is natural. Fans of a club will always hold their own club in highest regard, but I get the sense that we're a bit of an outlier in this respect.

Loyalty in football is a vanishingly (if not already vanished) thing. The days of the 1-club player, especially in the top 2 divisions, are gone. The money that is thrown around has seen to that. Every player has a club that they supported as a kid. You don't get into football to that level without enjoying it as a fan as well. But they are also professional people, with a relatively short career who are, as we all are, looking to make the most for themselves out of what they do as a living.

Generally, footballers don't owe their ex clubs much. They are also coached and encouraged to engage as much as is sensible with the fans of whoever they're playing for. We've seen it with Henderson as possibly the best recent example (prior to yesterday). When they're here, they at least give the public showing of buying into the ethos of a club, and its fanbase, because it is good for their image. Nobody wants to sign a player that acts like a stroppy brat and doesn't do the bare minimum to make the fans of whoever they're playing for at any given moment like them. And when it comes to promotion celebrations and parades etc, who wouldn't enjoy a day of adulation while getting merrily pissed with their workmates and friends?

The reality is that 99% of them will go where the big(gest) money is. It's human nature. There are outliers (Billy for example could maybe have got more money elsewhere when he came back to us the last time, but he's one of the 1% in that regard), but the majority will always see it as their job first, and any interest or support for a club 2nd.

I don't blame Ndiaye for doing what he's done. My personal opinion is he will probably always have a look on a saturday evening, in his luxury flat in Marseille, and hope to see that we are doing well. I think he's enjoyed his time here, and probably personally appreciates the fact that United gave him his ticket to the big time. But beyond that, he has no personal connection to the team, or the city. Villifying him and wishing injury on him just makes us look petty, and small-time. Sure, the whole thing could maybe have been handled better, but I don't think the blame for that is on him.

This is a stream of consciousness cos I've just come off nights and I'm fucking shattered, but the main point I'm trying to make is we need to let go of this idea that everyone who ever has a bit of success with us as a player is therefore a Blade for life. Most of them aren't, and never will be. The club was an employer that they enjoyed working for, but once they move on, their focus will be on their new employer, and doing all they can to endear themselves to a new fanbase.

Good luck Iliman. I think you've made a decision that isn't the best for your career, but maybe you're one of the 1%, and just fulfilling your lifelong dream. I've loved watching you play for us, and I'll always remember moments like the goal vs spurs. Maybe you're not "once a blade, always a blade" but you were a Blade for a while, and I hope that it will prove to have been a mutually beneficial relationship. If by some miracle we stay up, then we owe you a debt of thanks for being the main factor in getting us here. And if you go on to be a global superstar and Ballon D'Or competitor, then maybe you owe us a bit for putting you out there, and getting you noticed.

Good well thought out post.

I think we have to accept players will go where the money is, hence why so many are happy to throw their careers down the toilet to play in Saudi Arabia.

I’d disagree though that a bit of respect for the club in general isn’t too much to ask while off to your big pay day and for me his actions mean he leaves under a cloud (which is putting it mildly). He was such a good player though that he could wipe his arse on the shirt (which isn’t far off what’s happened in my opinion) and some of our fans would still wish him all the best.

Some people are bitter and angry about it but I disagree it is a “small time” mentality or we need to to always worry about how other fan’s perceive us. It’s football and it’s emotional. It’s a sideways move all things considered and some of our fans are going on like he’s gone to Real Madrid.

Fair. I don't necessarily think he's disrespected our club though. I get how people may think that, what with him wearing the OM scarf at the airport and stuff, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he's a fairly young lad who probably got caught up in the moment. Understand how it angers people though. Maybe he/his advisors should have sorted a more low-key arrival for him. With the wealth involved, I reckon it would have been doable to fly him privately, and on the quiet, to a small local airport/field and then taxi him to the ground or wherever he went to sign. That might have negated a lot of the anger.

I don't think being angry or upset is small-time. I think wishing harm on him because he has left us is. Entirely fair to be angry at him, and to openly say you don't give a shit what happens with his career, I understand that. But actively hoping he gets hurt, gets a bad injury etc? I can't get on board with that, and I think it paints a nasty picture of Blades fans.

Unless there's a lot going on on twitter which I've not been looking at, is there a lot of blades wishing injury on him? I've seen one person on here doing it (which I'm prepared to let go as something said in the moment) with lot of people calling them out over it straight away.

My feelings are like Crookesblade. The nature of his departure has left a sour taste which is disappointing considering what he did for us. I suppose you could take some solace by saying the last minute change of heart shows that the lad was genuinely conflicted and at least gave some serious consideration to rejecting his dream move to stay with us. Others are choosing to read it as him stringing the club along and ultimately leaving us in the lurch with the airport stuff the final bit of salt in the wound. The airport stuff I don't blame him for, that's not his fault I suppose and can understand a young kid like him getting caught up in the moment and the blame probably lies with his agents who either didn't think to arrange something more lowkey given the circumstances or more likely didn't give a shit because why would they care what some fans of a former club think or how it reflects on their client?

The same agents I feel feel have basically advised him to jump to a dream move far too soon in his career so they can get a bonus. I can't wish any injuries or anything on Illy (maybe a few poor games so he can see just how toxic the fanbase he's joined can get) but I do hope his agents trap themselves in their flies every time they take a piss for the next decade or 2.

Wishing any genuine harm on him (hope he breaks his legs etc) is obviously not ok and that really doesn’t reflect well on those saying it or the club.

Ultimately players move on. We brought him through from non league and he earned us a much needed promotion so in footballing terms he owes us nothing. I think when you’ve got 25k singing your name every week and kids idolising you the least you can do is not actively give them a kick in the balls.

I think the airport thing (which I’m guessing was avoidable) would have been easy to write off it wasn’t on top of the video and contract thing, or the fact that stringing the whole affair out all summer has really harmed us.

One things for sure I’m glad the chances of him ever playing against us are very slim. That would be incredibly toxic. Once he’s done a couple of years with OM I can’t see any Premier League side coming in for him unless he was to run his contract down again.

Anyway, I’ll just be glad when the season starts and few new names are through the door so we can all stop talking about him (me included).

Top post. My sentiments echoed exactly.

Because people sing songs?
I likes me a good old song but not the same one over and over again reminiscing about a player that was hardly one if our best in history. Barrel of money acknowledges a few of our all time grates instead of just one decent defender we had for a few seasons.

You dislike it enough to cancel your season ticket and watch on the dodgy stick instead?

Well said, like Wilder too, give him a round of applause when he comes to the lane ,if you wish, then get back to reality, they are history now, whichever way you look at it.

There was another lunatic on here a few weeks ago saying he had a season ticket but wasn’t going to the Man Utd game because he hates them that much. Weird.

You've made some really good points in your posts, so i don't want to detract too much from what you've said and pick on the details... but i don't think SUFC or Ndiaye have strung this out, particularly.

It seems he was made a decent enough offer by SUFC and it was close, with the whole PR team pulling out some work in readiness. But in the background he was also hedging his bets with Marseille, which is natural.... But the approach from Marseille to SUFC didn't come until very late, at which point his mind was made up.

Hope not. Prefer a top side when we get there.
More than happy if they bomb out at earliest stage this season and never make it in there again.
A few financial irregularities uncovered and relegation would be the icing . . .

Not read last few pages so not sure if it’s been said but Forza Football just reported the fee at €17m

Just when you thought Marseille fans couldn't get more sad and weird as fuck.

I think PH alluded yesterday to it not being a great move at this stage in his career.

He had the chance to showcase himself in the best league in the world. He’s opted for the the 6th best in Europe with a couple of Champions League games. I think his agents/dad have pushed him because they wanted their pay day now, not potentially in 12 months.

Unless someone picks him up next summer that’s his chance in the PL gone. Give it any longer and he won’t be developing in that league and won’t represent decent value to any potential buyers.
This is perhaps why he had difficulty making his mind up about going? Who knows.
The other side may be that there’s no guarantee the dream move to his boyhood club would come around again. As I’ve said on another thread, you only have to look at JOC to see how cruel things can be despite the levels of talent, potential, expectations and ambitions you have. Maybe he was caught in two minds about whether now was the right time to move, but this offer was there for him now, and who knows whether it might never have happened again, for all sorts of reasons.

Made up for the lad, he gets a season at his boyhood club before a move to a big club where he will be protected.
Be honest, do you really think it would have been more than 5 games for us, him ripping shreds off top teams, before some basic defender smashed him into the injury room for the rest of the year?
