I think now that the dust is settling a little on the Ndiaye sale, I’d share my thoughts. I no longer have Facebook and Twitter and haven’t followed this thread in too much depth over the summer and I think it’s helped me to keep a slightly more objective view on the transfer dealings in general, as well as the Ndiaye saga. I’ve gained more interest as it got closer to his move to Marseille becoming a reality.
I have no affiliation or strong feelings towards or against the Prince, certainly no negativity against Hecky or Ndiaye. So I will try to keep objective.
The Prince
Not seen any comments or input from him, so I will remain neutral on his involvements
The Club
Offered a deal according to Hecky, the PR was ready to go and they felt that they’d done all they could.
Hecky
Thought he’s handled it well, post-sale. I didn’t see too much from him during the speculation. But it sounds like he was very instrumental in the development on Ndiaye over the last couple of years and has no doubt contributed to his rise. A lot of credit has to go to Hecky and his Coaching staff.
The Deal
My personal view is that it was almost inevitable that we had to get the best deal we could as Ndiaye was on countdown with his contract expiring.
Ndiaye
I have absolutely zero negativity towards him. As Hecky mentioned, the move for Ndiaye wasn’t taken out of professional reasons, it was his dream move and it is a huge thing for him. Marseille are perhaps not the biggest club in Europe, but they’re a big club for Ndiaye.
Ndiaye is perhaps the most special talent I’ve seen in a Blades shirt in my 45 years. He came to us via a very unique route and for whatever reason, he ended up with our club as a raw talent needing development. We have developed him to be the player he is and we’ve made a decent amount of money for him. Not the maximum, but a very strong return on the investment. He came to us having really reached the last chance, he leaves having played in the World Cup for a team playing Champions League Football. It highlights very much the state of our own club.
Ndiaye’s attitude, in my opinion, was never in question. Right up until the weekend, he was playing friendlies for us. Yes there is selfish attitude to be match fit for his new club, but also he could’ve requested not to play and risk injury.
Conclusion
I’m extremely disappointed to lose him. He was a huge part of why we’re now playing in the Premier League, he could’ve left sooner and whilst he’s left having not finished the job for us, he’s taken an opportunity to go onto a club which is a dream for him, so I can’t really complain too much.
I don’t want to see him stall in his career and personally I think he’d probably been better with a season with United before getting a bigger move. There is a risk that his career could stall, but I think his overall attitude and desire will drive him forward, with the right coaching he could be a real talent playing at the very top. Only time will tell if he’s taken a decision to move with his heart over his head. I personally want to see him play at the top and wish him all the best, but I am not sure whether Marseille is the right platform since French football is not as competitive as the Premier League or Serie A. His game suits English football.
I’ll personally be watching his career with interest.
