Agreed, we shouldn't really be sending kids abroad. But, when players reach 20-22 they are at a point where they've probably already been on a loan to a lower league club and probably not been wholly successful. We tend to send players out (Smith, Slater) to clubs but then just send them to a similar club the next season. If they're not developing but you're hoping for a breakthrough I think abroad is a good option. Belgium/Dutch leagues, for example have some really good clubs but also some distinctly average ones. As long as they're good enough to start for said team, then they're going to get match time and also play against some top players. You could probably chuck Scotland in there as well.

The U-23 and U-18 levels we play at are so poor. We really need to focus on improving this. I assume one of the reasons we field younger teams is the strength of the opposition. It has clearly not worked so far. The U-23 need a much bigger challenge than they're getting. How we do this quickly, I don't know. We could farm players out but they'll be going to non-league or maybe a few in League 2 but not starting.
I don’t see the problem with sending youngsters abroad. Until Covid struck thousands of youngsters took a gap year often working in remote areas without the protection of a football club or indeed anyone.
Clearly you have to know the individual but working abroad should benefit most who are capable of making a living in professional football.

Sometimes, when I listen to the arguments, with all the amateur decoding of Wilder's hidden messages in press conferences, I feel people don't distinguish enough between a) a first team training complex, with space for all the luxury cars, and a Michelin starred canteen, and offices for personal image consultants, and a roof that doesn't leak and b) an Academy, where kids can learn to play, plastic pitches, cages, offices for many different coaches, enough grass pitches for all the age groups, and a roof that doesn't leak. Some clubs have used space better by clearly separating the two, on two different sites. Maybe we could do that - keep Shirecliffe for one thing, new site for the other.
What is at Crookes then? I thought I read somewhere we have a facility there.

My way of describing that facility is that it's a (small) commercial gym & sports centre. Where you can book bootcamps, pilates classes, hockey pitches, after work five-a-sides, walking football, etc.

Disagree with the notion that you shouldn’t send kids abroad. Look at the trend of young players going to Germany. Seems like it’s doing wonders for the majority..

I think one of the key factors is many of the teams in Germany and many other European cities for that matter are in dull places so football remains the main focus with little distraction and the standard is also very high.
Agreed with that in the distraction sense although the language barrier could cause problems, in this country in non-League (Conference North etc) when fans are in the stadium the pressure is on and you can here individual comments even when they are not social media are on their backs and for a 16-20 year old it's a lot of pressure to deflect.

When Guiseley were streaming their games free on YouTube I was tuning in to watch the progress of Ashton Hall the young centre back not the wedding venue in Lancashire (Google it) to be fair to him he played well and looked comfy on the ball and in both FA Cup games I watched they won 4-0 and 2-0 but he didn't really have much to do.

If he had been loaned out to some German lower tier, the pressure would have been less however blades fans wouldn't have seen him play. So I suppose its balancing experiences however the conference and conference North (I will always call it that) are competitive leagues and alot on the line too. Potentially you could be fighting for promotion to football league or spiralling in free fall down the pyramid.

A friend of mine who sat in the Family Stand would freely confess that she 'hates' Duffy, even in his pomp, so that sort of idiocy was widely spread.
I’m not saying it’s everywhere, or that the mentality isn’t changing but I think a certain group of our fans don’t get creative or flair players and don’t have the patience with youngsters. They want no mistakes, safety first, play the percentages football. Probably comes from decades as the underdogs trying to give the bigger boys a bloody nose, which I love about The Blades, but we need to raise our expectations. In the Championship we need to be the big boy which would show significant progression as a club and to do that we need to nurture those types of player within the club.

All that said, I think folk on here are getting ahead of themselves with the kids. Most won’t be ready for us next season and need a season away playing men’s football at a professional level. For most the pathway to the first team isn’t a motorway, and they need to be given the time and experience to develop.

Youngsters and particularly young forwards thrive on self belief and confidence. Let him play at a level where he can be an influence, score and create but most importantly, enjoy himself. If that means he has to continue in junior football so be it so long as the challenge is there. If we can find him a professional club so much the better but either way we’ll get the benefits later.

You only have to look at DCL's recent comments about United fans. How he was gutted reading comments such as I'll drive him there myself from when he was going to Everton. At that point he had hardly had much of a chance and in the few games he had played he looked quite promising.

I'm sorry to say we have some very moronic fans, you only have to listen to half of the comments people shout out on the south stand to realise how clueless a lot of our supporters are. I've had to move season ticket several times to get away from utter morons cause I can't be doing with them talking utter bollocks.

A lot of Everton fans would have happily driven him back too after his first season with them. Every club has its dickheads.

I’m little bit worried, a mercenary type of foreign manager, with a two season brief to get us promoted, might overlook this stunningly talented crop of young players, from the U23’s. In favour of more experienced professionals, who could do a job in the Championship. This is also a good thing, but I’d hate for us to waste more money and in turn block the pathway for these youngsters to get into the first team.

It sounds like a plan to use the best of the young players will be something that any prospective new manager will be asked about, and from a pragmatic standpoint it sounds as though it'll be necessitated by the likelihood we won't have a lot of money to spend on those more experienced professionals.

I'd disagree with your point anyway though. I think you could re-write what you've said to say that any type of manager with a two-season brief to get us promoted might overlook younger players. I don't think UK-based managers have an in-built greater appreciation of younger players than foreign managers, nor do I think any manager who comes in will be more of a mercenary if they're foreign.

On the foreign manager thing. I would be more to amenable to a foreign coach who is already here or has previously managed in the English league. Instead of someone parachuted in, not really knowing what to expect at Bramall lane.

what the fuck are we playing at with ndiaye. Apparently one of the most talented players we’ve have for years and all he wants is game time and then will sign the contract but this board is to fucking stubborn. He isn’t even playing for the u23s anymore because of it. We desperately need a creator so the fact we have a very promising young one but we have completely frozen him out is irritating.

GERRIMIN. Seriously. He's one of the latest talented crop, give him a try.

I think we have learnt not to play want aways.
A very different situation. Ndiaye wants to be here, just wants to play. Lunny knew he was wanted elsewhere. If we give Ndiaye a chance and he impresses he gets a new deal. If he doesn’t perform then we’re justified in not offering him better terms. It’s a daft position to put ourselves in.

Feels like we don’t even want to give him a chance though. Didn’t even get on the bench against Carlisle. This team of people who negotiate contracts and make signings are shit

We’ve done exactly what I criticised the pigs for with Hirst.

I don't think the club should be held to ransom over any player nevermind a youngster.
