Every year we're in the Championship represents an opportunity to return to the PL
Yeah in the same way it does for Rotherham United and in the same way any dog can technically play the piano

We've been promoted to the PL on a limited budget in three of our past 12 Championship seasons.

I don't think it makes sense to be not trying to get promoted so its not really a choice.

We have assembled a squad who could at least compete to be in the top 6, thats what we have to keep striving for regardless of takeover.

The bigger issue is what we do if we got promoted (with or without takeover).

We didn't help ourselves by selling Ndaiye and Berge last season, but in all honesty, would keeping these two have made a blind bit of difference?

The gap is so big, if we do get promoted we either need a tight knit squad in the hope that we can add one or 2 quality and scrap for survival, or we make wholesale changes with as big a budget as we can.

I think our squad this year is great but how many would be PL quality... Hamer and Blaster are the only 2 that I would be confident in. But I don't like the way teams get promoted and then sell the players that achieved that. Doesn't sit well with me.

I trust we wouldn't make all of the same recruitment mistakes with Wilder and possibly Des Taylor around.

We'd sign known entities from the Championship, that would at least secure our medium term future and make us competitive upon the inevitable relegation.
Of course, we would have to suffer for that year in the PL but I think we'd be a bit more competitive (circa 25 points)

To be honest, without seriously game changing money all we can really do is get promoted and then relegated.
Getting promoted buys us extra time in the hope that we eventually do get bought out by someone that can take us to the next level.

It's not an either / or for me , it's part if the same journey . Promotion indicates success , it probably increases the possibility of attracting buyers and progressing the club in terms of finances .
Should PA remain in another PL season we have to simply accept that we don't have the financial clout to compete across the PL and staying up would be a huge success.
However another difficult season in the PL would give the opportunity for the Dore site to be progressed along with player and academy recruitment and that again is progression .
With the exception of a few tonkings and a relegation battle I don't see a downside in Promotion no matter who's at the helm .

I’d hazard a guess that we were at the top end of the wage budgets when Warnock got us promoted. We definitely were under Hecky.

In theory we always have a ‘limited budget’, however it’s how we measure up relative to other promotion rivals that matters and I’d say 2 out of those 3 promotions we had a financial advantage over most of the league.

Without it we aren’t financially stable as a club.
I don't think any championship club is stable if going for it! It is still the driving force and has to be that way or what's the point of playing .
Stand still and go backwoods that's the problem for most clubs in championship.

These discussions highlight the problem on football today.

Most talk is about getting promoted to get money so we are financially stable ….(whichever division we are in)

At grass routes we talk about how to develop the players we have to be their best competitively in the competition … a subtle difference and I understand the two are not exclusive …

The riches of the prem league and in particular the top 6 are ruining the entire football pyramid

On a tangent. Do teams in the Spanish, Italian and German equivalents of the Championship have the same issue? (Need 1 in 3 seasons getting pummeled in the top tier to keep in the running) Or is it less pronounced? Are those fans happier than us lot?

Some fans - " I hate the PL and everything it stands for. I just want to play in the Championship"

Same fans - "I'd hate to be Crystal Palace, stuck in mid- table mediocrity for years on end"

I wonder if there are threads on other clubs’ forums about how any championship side going up has to spend hundreds of millions just to have a chance of finishing above relegation - except that Sheffield United side who challenged for Europe and finished 9th…

I don't particularly care who owns us but yes I do want to see us promoted (through a play off final, finally bury that Voodoo curse !! )
We will need approx £150m of squad investment (but players who would be first 11 , I hate the "we need squad players statement" unless it's some good young attacking players who would get us off our seats)
If Taylor has been involved with player recruitment/scouting we need to keep him plus I suspect he's been involved with opposition reports ,my worry is our scouting team don't spread the search net far enough (I think this is down to PA not investing in the overseas scouting team and relying on the UW team)
My only concern would be CW , I will always thank him for some of the best seasons I've had watching the blades but would like to see a different coaching group for the premier

I think that goes for a lot of blades! Great to win matches again.
Not the real world though is it ! we would be in trouble financially again without promotion or new owners able to take the hit if a stay in the championship came along.
Oh totally. The reality is that we need to get promotion. But then ultimately the question of this thread is “would you like your club to have a financially secure future - yes/no” and the answer is a much more obvious one and perhaps one that’s not especially interesting to discuss.

I think the “would you rather mostly kick around in the Championship winning most weeks but not getting promoted or spend every other season getting battered in the prem and being a yo-yo club (in the hope that eventually you become a long-term prem side)” debate is fairly interesting.

Going up & down is the only way the Prince can afford to keep us, with the hope of one of the seasons we pull off a miracle and stay up without spending a fortune.

Whilst I agree ☝️ that is the exception and not the rule and I also believe things have moved on at pace since that season … it’s changed dramatically in a short space of time

Hopefully the big rich clubs will sod off to their Superleague and give the rest half a chance.

No chance. Big money in an expanded Champions league anc Big money in the Prem. They very definitely want both, but want to keep increasing their slice of the cake.

It's a shame we can't auction off our PL place if we get promoted. Leeds could give us a cheeky £100m and we could avoid the expense and trauma of the PL.

Why would anyone not want us to go up?
Going up to the Prem even if it means coming back down again because of lack of investment is the pinnacle that this club can reach whilst under the current owner.

It is way beyond the pinnacle of almost every other boardroom we've ever had.
And it is the only way that we will ever see half decent players at the club.

Besides I'm happy to constantly steal the Premier League's money, fuck them

Hopefully the big rich clubs will sod off to their Superleague and give the rest half a chance.

Can't see it making much difference sadly, a new group of 4-6 teams will just replace the exodus
