Just to clarify again for those who say he can’t be trusted to control himself. Last night was only the second time in his career that he’s been sent off.

Sure it was a daft unnecessary challenge, but let’s not start making stories up about his behaviour on the pitch just because he behaved like a goon off it in the past. We’re going to miss the option of playing him in the next 3 games whether some like it or not.

I disagree but it doesn’t matter. I certainly didn’t see any malicious intent. As I’ve said, Basham’s tackle was worse so we’ve got away with that one at least.
You really don't like Basham do you?

Seems like you take any opportunity to bash Bash

I'm not one jumping on the bandwagon, I was already up there in my reserved seat.

How many games can you say with 100% certainty, we wouldn't have got a result without him? I'd suggest none, although I accept he does give us a very different option.

There's the nub and that is why we shouldn't have signed the thug. My feelings against him were were for his thuggery and obvious inability to control himself. Well what a big surprise then when it happens again.

FFS, it is NOT about 'prejudice'. If you employ a thug with a track record of thumping random strangers, you are taking on someone with serious character flaws. Quite why people are then surprised that he does the same random violent thing on the pitch, mystifies me.

He's a pig too of course, but that is a long way down my list of concerns.

He is not a pig ,unless you class Geary Bromby and Carl Bradshaw as pigs too ? Its the second time in his career he has been sent off ,does that make Fleck and Basham thugs ? You said he gives us a different option ,so you decide ,do you want whats best for Sheffield United or do you carry on with a childish grudge which would make us weaker All a bit pathetic if you ask me.

I am not at all seething with him. Not one jot.

These things happen. Daft, but in the heat of the moment........

He isn’t the first to see red !!

My request of him would be that he uses the time off to good effect.

Working closely with the sports science team, staying out the ale house and away from the chicken nuggets, losing 5 pounds and generally improving his overall sharpness, which, bluntly, is well below the required standard.

That's news to me. I mentioned him a few times yesterday but I'm not sure I've mentioned him all that much before. Can you show me where I've 'bashed' him before now? I'm genuinely interested to know what you're basing that on. Are you sure you've got the right person?

For what's worth, I really do like Basham. I think he's one of the most important players in our team due to his high energy. I think that putting him into the midfield yesterday basically saved us the game as he's able to get forward and back more than any other player in our team and it was a real help to Norwood and Fleck who were getting overrun a little.

It was in no way similar to Vaulks on Saturday. Vaulks came flying in at an angle, determined to stop a player running through. That was a yellow already for the clear intent of not letting Baldock pass into acres of open green grass. Also the point of impact was way harsher as they traveled in different directions, meaning there was a risk of genuine injury involved.

Madine slid into a guy who was almost slowing down at that point to shield the ball. He slid and wasn't hurtling himself out of control. The touch was relatively light and I also don't think he went through the man in the sense of wiping him out. More side to side.

No need to see this black and white. Personally, in the ground and on the highlights, I would give yellow in a match that had no violence at all before. But if he gives red, it isn't a wrong decision as such. Just a touch harsh in the context of the game and what the tackle meant.

Final verdict for me is their manager who stood five yards away and lost a stressful match. His reaction (in an otherwise very interesting and fair analysis) was:

How did you see the Gary Madine sending off for the challenge on Ezri Konsa?

It could be a red, it could be a yellow - it could be both.

That - for me - settles it, football-wise. The rest of this thread is an interesting study in fan psychology. :p

I too was terrified every time he launched in after his booking because sometimes he does let his enthusiasm get the better of him.

You keep referencing his foul when talking about Madine's rush of blood so I did a quick search back and most of your posts about Bash seem to be implicating him in things that have gone wrong, and at one stage you even had Lenny to replace him in central defence.

However, I do know that such a search is an imperfect science so I'm happy to accept that I may have got it wrong and apologise if that's the case.

Basham's tackle last night was "overenthusiastic" but Madine's was just ridiculous.

I suspect their player had been talking to Madine and he lost his head.

It happens, I think Madine has been a good addition to the squad but last night he was just plain daft and it will end up costing us and him.

Yeah, looks a sending off. It happens. He will know he let the lads down. Fortunately, we were good enough to still pull through.

Wilder said, if Vaulks had to go for Rotherham then Gary's challenge was a red all night long.

I'll take Wilder's view over Franks.

Debate back on.

Maybe Madine should think not me. He went through the back of him with his studs showing and his feet off the ground. He was always going to have go through the man to get to the ball in that position.

The pundits on tv commented the same as me and said, 'it was frustration'.

What was your view of the sending off? The reason why I ask is that the replay of it makes it look a lot worse than it did in real time because of the angle. On the replay it does indeed look like he is coming through the back of him. However, my view of it on the Kop was of the players running straight at me and from that angle you could see Madine actually come around the side of the player (there's a picture knocking about on here that backs it up but I can't remember where it is). It also wasn't 'feet' up, it was 'foot' up, if you get may drift and his foot wasn't particularly high anyway. I'll also add that his foot didn't even make contact with the player it was his leg following through that did (again, the picture I mentioned backs this up).

This isn't me trying to change your opinion, because lets face it that's unlikely to happen and it doesn't particularly matter anyway, I'm just wondering if it possibly looked worse depending on the angle at which it was viewed.

I also think the most telling thing is the reaction of the players. When it's a particularly bad tackle you often see the opposition players making a big deal of it. That didn't happen yesterday.

With the red mist descending, you missed the point of my post about him being a thug. That is why I have the 'childish grudge' rather than his history.

The pig thing doesn't help but really isn't the issue here.

All a bit pathetic if you ask me

I didn't ask you it happens but I do normally take an interest in what you say. If it's okay with you, I'll stick with my anti-pig hang ups and you can do the bigger man thing.

Just a different way to look at it, not to excuse it was a dreadful tackle and was totally silly and not needed but, Could Madine have been trying to hard to impress? Only his second red card in his career. I say this because tracking back and making tackles isn't really his game but we know how much wilder likes this from his strikers. Did Madine want to impress and by doing so did the total opposite. Some of the comments are ridiculous send him back etc. He has done well since he come to us and has definitely give us a different option. Madine had a rush of blood and made a totally stupid unneeded tackle no doubt about it but get off the kids back.

So you think he wasn't going for the ball ? Why would he do that right in front of the benches under no pressure when playing well and we are near the top of the league. You think he deliberately got sent off ? Why ,what would he gain from it ?
It was a mistimed challenge to win the ball high up the pitch which we do ,just think about things.

I don't know why he did it. I just know that he's absolutely nowhere near playing the ball. He probably didn't think at all. It still looks to me like a horrible challenge. Absolutely no way people would defend this if it wasn't one of our players.

I don't have an agenda either but that was a straight red all day long. If that happened against us we'd be baying for blood. Ridiculous tackle. Anyway. WHAT A FUCKING PERFORMANCE!!!

Much worse challenge did happen at the sty when we played the filth ……. referee declined to take appropriate action on their full-back Palmer o_O

It was a stupid, badly timed challenge which would attract a yellow card 95% of the time, imho

I don't like Madine either but I don't have an agenda …...

Neither did our players or manager really contest the red card. Wilder just had a look of resignation at the time, and didn't have any concerns about the decision afterwards either.

Three ex pros on tv all agreed it was a red card.

In today's game you're running a gauntlet having your studs showing with your foot or feet high enough to be over the top of a ball on the ground.

In Madine's case he didn't have the chance to go literally over the ball as the ball was the other side of the players body.

As they said on Sky later last night, maybe it was frustration.

It just looked a silly needless challenge, especially in today's game.

I think the Madine factor is clouding a few judgements but not in the way some are assuming.

Put it this way, I'd have been up in arms if one of their players had done the same to Madine.

I just don't get how when a referee sees it as red, our manager doesn't disagree, their manager says it 'could' have been red, and ex pros on tv all agree it's red, then anyone on here saying the same must have an agenda according to some.

Wow!
Some widely varying views on the challenge by Madine.
My view in real time, yellow I exclaimed in my head. My two modern day footballer sons exclaimed red.
This morning, having viewed it several times, harsh but understandable yellow, never ever a red!
Did he actually make contact with the guys leg? His tackling foot appears at the side of the other guys leg, he certainly didn't go through him as some suggest.
I do despair at some sending offs these days, but then I come from a different era where you had to really do something badly wrong to get sent off.

And to put further context on my view, Santos's tackle on Johnson(?) was a perfect example of a good strong challenge :-)

CW said he knew it was a red straight away and Madine lost his head. His challenge was as bad as Vaulks on Saturday and was deserving of a red. Can't disagree with that.

Vaulks challenge on Saturday and Palmers challenge at the sty were both much worse imho ……

Poor quality and inconsistent referees are the problem …..

didn't look like a red to me, but the I don't have an agenda.

I have no agenda. I've been one of his biggest fans since he signed.

Definite Red card.

You can tell with Wilder's reaction. Hands in pockets, stood in silence just staring at Madine

He can't name any with 100% certainty, as its a hypothetical question which we have no way of knowing the answer.

That being said, Madine's presence was a massive influence against Norwich away and Middlesbrough at home, two of our best results recently.

Again, what angle were the pro's viewing it at? I'm assuming it was the same as the replay which as I've pointed out, makes it look worse than it was. Again, the picture I've seen (I'm still trying to locate it) shows that the ball was there to be won, it wasn't 'the other side of the players body' until their player stepped across slightly.

It was needless I'll fully agree with that.

Interesting that you suggest the 'Madine factor' is clouding some judgements. I assume you don't feel that way about the people who agree with yourself? For what it's worth I haven't mentioned any agendas so you don't really need to be putting that comment my way.

First bit is simply not true , 3 or 4 players remonstrated with the referee ,just out of interest were you at the game. Reason I ask is as LJ says the angle on the TV is misleading ,he approached from the side and tackled with his wrong foot. It was a crap forwards tackle which should have had a yellow ,people saying words had been said ,he was pent up etc etc are just talking shit ,he was having a good game ,far better than his partner. Look at madines reaction which says a lot ,he had resigned himself to a booking and was totally bewildered when the red came out ,he wasn't angry just shocked.

I would if I'd seen it the same way that I did last night. If I'd only seen the replay I'd probably be agreeing with the red though

Fair play. And I'll admit when I've calmed down a bit I'll probably be willing to give Madine yet another chance, it just winds me up a bit that some people struggle to be impartial when looking at challenges like that.

What makes you think you're being more impartial than those who disagree with you though?
