Down memory Lane.....this day

A brief shaft of light in an otherwise very disappointing season that ended in relegation. And as usual, a relegation snatched from the jaws of safety.
Though we were safe when we beat Charlton at home then the black day at Cambriidge arrived

Down to the west country for todays offering:

I've just found this thread and I was at that match.

I spent the week based in Looe, Cornwall where I had spent a summer working a couple of years before and took a lass who I used to work with to the game as she hadn't anything else on, and wanted to see a football match, and had a right laugh. The funniest thing of the night is getting the last bus back to Plymouth from Tavistock after spending the full day boozing we was all other each other on the bus, when it stopped in the middle of nowhere and one got Shred and a few other hardened members of Shreds army and we ended up having a top night with them all in Plymouth Barbican until 3am. To this day whenever I see Shred he still asks if I'm still in touch with her.

Oddly enough, Silent, now that you mention it.

10 years ago today....29th July 2003. A 1-0 win for the Blades.

One of my two visits to Saltergate, I remember it tipping it down that night.

The other visit came in 1994 when I picked out a game on the Saturday to go to with a mate as the Blades were at Man City so we went to a local game instead and saw a 1-1 between Chesterfield and Rochdale

Indeed. Charlton were our main rivals and we beat them 2-1 at the Lane on 28th April leaving us both on 33 points (Charlton had a better GD), but we had 3 games left and Charlton 1 . Moreover our 3 games were home to already relegated Balkburn and against two sides in the lower half of the table and with nothing to play for - Cambridge (a) and Leicester (h). One could have hardly asked for a better set of final fixtures. Indeed after the Charlton game their manager said that only a miracle could save them.

True to form, the miracle happened for United's rivals. Charlton won their game and we lost to Blackburn and Cambridge and drew with Leicester.

If I remember right , at Cambrisge we , like 3 seasons ago were decimated with injury , we had lost nearly the entire team , and went more in hope than expectation that the walking wounded would prevail, alas not to be , it was more gutting as it was the first time in our history we lost our top 2 division status, the lowest in our history, going to div 4 seemed more out of atrocious mis management somehow, whereas this was playing staff being inept

26 years ago, and today purely from a programme point of view.

A careful look at the cover will detect that the game is dated 1897.

Some opportunists have from time to time attempted to claim that this makes it a rarity.
It does not. A copy dated 1987 would be :)

Match day sponsors were the Anglo Scandia Football League, who many of you will be familiar with, and no doubt a fair few of you probably played in.

A 3-1 victory over Blackburn with goals coming from Cadette, Dempsey and on his debut Chris Marsden

2 -1 up with 5 minutes to go, weren't we? That was defeat no 4 out of the 5 to start the year, I think.
2004: H Leeds W2-0 (Ward, Harley)
That was the game that convinced Warnock to get rid of Hayles and keep Ward, who of course never played well again and was soon injured.

And also today:
1990: A Derby D1-1 (Deane)

and what a night that was! Our first point back in the top flight and the first time I'd seen us do anything but lose at The Baseball Ground at the ninth attempt.
Deano II scored for them if I remember right and then the real Deano got in a towering header late on. Who'd have thought it'd be three more months before we won a game?

You're right about the Palace game.

The Leeds game saw a great finish by Ward following a great through ball from Tonge. That was the last of his 5 goals for us.

One of the two goals in the last 5 mins was an absolute screamer which would have killed someone on the Kop hap the net not got in the way.

Was our first league win that year the Norwich game where Bryan Gunn got sent off at half time????

Ooh I remember that, one my earlier football memories. There were some appreciative murmurs on the Kop for that goal.

It was indeed. That 5 consecutive defeats at the start of the season is a record. Our second worst start was losing 4 at the start of 66-67. In neither season were we relegated.

I was at the Barnsley game in 1980. We got bossed out of it in midfield totally, memory plays tricks but I think it was Ronnie Glavin that ran the show.

Was it Gavin and Banks together? They were too good for us in midfield for sure.

Happier about the win at Elland Road with Sir Keith getting some fearful stick in our first game against him after his jumping ship, and the first time I'd seen us win there*. Good finish by Phyllis. Not a good trip back to the car though!

*When it actually mattered. We'd seen them win after being relegated in '76.
