Franks, Eddy, Garbett and Scullion - 3 ouf of that 4 :)

yes indeed, Eddy, Scullion and Garbage. Currie took advantage of a mix up between Eddy and the Watford keeper to get the winner.

The kick off was held up, when Furphy had to call two Watford players off because the shirts they were wearing weren't numbered properly.

And another one from today.. 65 years ago today...1948.

and one of my old man's favourite three blades in all that time makes his league debut in a 2-1 home defeat to Liverpool. A certain...Mr Joe Shaw.

6pm kick off on a Monday.

Was it on fucking Sky?

In the early 1960s John Harris requested that midweek matches kick off at 6.30pm because he thought that we would get better crowds with the fans going straight to the match after work, rather than go home, have tea and then some of the fans decide against going to the match for the 7.30pm kick off because they find the tv more interesting to watch. The experiment wasnt a success and soon it was back to 7.30pm kick off

Didn't we also play River Plate on this date? One of my first games lost 2-1 Woody with a pen after Sabella refused to take it. Was it Woody's last goal for us?

Correct about the date and that it was Woody's last goal for us. His last game for us was the 2-0 defeat at Fulham on Sept 9th before playing a few reserves matches and then going to USA. I didnt realise that Sabella refused to take the penalty but Woody was our penalty taker for most of his Lane career (apart from Jan 1968 (after his miss in the 3-0 home defeat against Man City) to April 1971 (his next penalty was in the 3-0 promotion clinching win at home to Watford which was on May 1st) also in 1974 Ken Furphy decided that Keith Eddy would be our penalty taker (Eddy's 1st pen was in the 2-2 home draw against Spurs in Jan despite the fans booing him as they wanted Woody to take it) and then Woody got the penalty responsibility back in 1976 (v Leicester in Feb, I think)

Not in the best condition but still....

Today: 43 years ago 1969...a 2-0 League Cup victory over Newcastle United (Woodward and Tudor)

Woody also played the last 15 minutes in goal when Hodgy got injured.

Woody scored direct from a corner at the Kop End in the opening minutes. It is one of Lampiao's favourite goals. He said Woody had spotted Newcastle's keeper, Iam McFaul being too near the near post (probably worried about big Eddie's presence) so Woody placed the ball into the far post with an inswinger. There is a photo of the goal in the programme for the next home game

28 years ago today 1985, and a 5-1 hammering of neighbours, Rotherham in the 2nd leg, 1st Rd of the Milk Cup (League Cup).

Colin Morris, and a couple each from Peter Withe and Joe Bolton.

After football, Bolton went trucking. Whilst Withe went coaching, ultimately getting fired from every job for being ugly.

Wednesday lost 5-1 at home to Everton the same night. It was a good night.

September 3rd 1977 drew 1-1 at home to Sunderland.

I missed it because I got married that day.

Better get myself changed now, there's a restaurant table with my name on it ;)

No contest here...40 years ago today...1973 : TC sitting on the ball against Arsenal. Sweet revenge.

Sheffield United 5-0 Arsenal

As a young whippersnapper, always remember getting down off the railings on the kop and running back up the steps to the old man 'and saying 'did you see that dad'. :)

What night that was. TC was something else compared to every other player on the pitch.

Yes it was, :) 4-0 up in 17 minutes. Scores were Dearden, Woodward, Currie (2) and Jim Bone.

FORTY years?????

Fuck me, I'm feeling old today now!

One of the few run of the mill league games that feature in my list of favourite games (i.e. most of my memorable games are cup/play off games) and a night, I suspect, no-one who saw it would ever forget.

Missed the game as I was in my second week at boarding school. I didnt know the score until I looked at the papers and I was amazed that we had thrashed Arsenal. There was a big photo of Jimmy Bone's goal on the back page of the Express. I was delighted at the win but i was disappointed that I wasnt at the Lane to see the big win

The dark side are put to the sword by 'The Birch', who scored both goals in only his second appearance for United. United won 2-0.

Was expecting the programme for the exciting 3-3 draw against Bristol City in 1970. 3 down with 15 minutes left, a rising shot by Woody, a 1st Blade goal for Dearden and a last minute overhead kick equaliser by Tudor. I suppose a derby win will get the vote! Saw a front page picture of our 1964 2-0 win at S6 in the Soccer Star magazine some years ago. We wore all white kit

Yes, Silent it did cross my mind, it was a close call but AB is always worth a mention.

There is someone on the front page photo (Eddie Colquhoun scoring the winner against Swindon) for the Bristol City programme that took part in a World Cup final!

Indeed.....Jack Taylor.

I wonder how many world cup final participants have ever graced the cover of a United programme? No on second thoughts don't even go there

League Cup 2nd Rd v Workington

A Billy Dearden goal is enough to send United through.

Incidentally, we have a proud 100% record against Workington...given that this is the only time we've ever played them.

In the squad meeting at a hotel near Workington, Gil Reece was upset at being named the sub so he refused to go to the match and then shortly after that he got sold to Cardiff City
