I was hoping that for Sept 7th you would pick our 2-1 win at West Ham in 1974 and I would have given a description of Woody's goal that "defied science"! Where were you on Saturday!?

Belter absolute belter. How the bleeding hell did he never play for England?

It was a very windy day. My dad drove down to my boarding school, took me and my 3 schoolmates to Upton Park. We played with the wind on our backs in the 1st half but didnt get a goal. Billy Jennings gave the Hammers the lead as we struggled to play the ball past the halfway line during the 2nd half until Woody broke free, carried the ball from the half way line and when he arrived just outside the penalty box, he fired in a powerful shot that pierced through the strong wind and stunned Mervyn Day. Billy Dearden got the winner by diverting a hopeful cross that looped over Day. On the following Monday Benny Hill (not the comedian) wrote a column in the Morning Telegraph praising Woody's number of spectacular goals in his career

Sorry Silent, I probably would have. But after, football training saturday morning, fetching a daughter from gymnastics and then match saturday afternoon. If I'm honest, I didn't have the heart to post a memory of when we half decent at a time where the locals were out with the pitchforks, in regards to United's performance.:(

Even yesterday, when after watching the game at the Academy, I was going to post the 7-3 thrashing of Wednesday in 1951, but them t*****s in the first team had seemed to cast a shadow over the weekend.

Again apologies

Today, a couple of offerings:

58 years ago today 1955, a 1-0 home win over Manchester United, courtesy of a Mark Jones own goal, the red devils went onto win the title that season.

and secondly 38 years ago today 1975, a 4-2 away win over Halifax at the Shay.

World class finishing from a world class player, a hat-trick for Chris Guthrie.

Sorry lads been away for a couple of days, in all honesty, haven't had the nerve to post anything the last couple of weekends, from better times, just hasn't seemed right given our current situation. Still here goes:

25 years ago Today...September 17th 1988.

A 6-1 hammering of Chester, with Deane and Agana both bagging hat-tricks.

We've not played them since, but at the rate we're going it won't be long before we do :(

PS A good cover spoilt by one of the advertising boards.

Thats Stan playing against Bristol Rovers on 3/9/88. Bristol R went 1-0 up early doors but then we stormed back to win 4-1 with goals from Bryson 2, Roberts and Agana.

Not so fun fact. This was the last time I recall an opposition black player - Devon White in this case - getting the monkey noise treatment. I think perhaps it then started to dawn on even the most stupid supporter that that might not be the best way to encourage our new lethal strike force.

Yes we have. We beat them in the away league match the following April 1-0.

Ian Holloway, no less, scored Bristol Rovers' goal in that game.

The Chester game (watched by our lowest league gate of the season, 8,000 odd) remains one of my favourite games of all time. You could see that we had something special on our hands in Deane and Agana...the 4-0 pasting of Northampton the following Tuesday was another terrific game.

The Sherpa Van trophy game, where Chester equalised in the last minute, was the first home game we failed to win all season, after winning the first 8 league games, 2 league cup games, and one FA Cup game...good times.

Gone with a fantastic four today: 18th September.

Three derby games and an away game that I remember the old man stumbling up the passageway at Sharrow Lane, fist pumping..

Game 1: 1954: 59 years ago : 1-0 (Waldock) :)
Game 2: 1965: 48 years ago : 1-0 (Birchenall) :)
Game 3: 1971: 42 years ago : 1-0 (Woodward) :)
Game 4: 2009: 4 years ago : 3-2 (Ward, Hendo, and a Buxton own goal) :p

September 88 was an amazing month. Including cup games our record was:

P7 W6 D0 L1 F24 A5 . - an average of over 3 goals a game!

That one defeat was at Gillingham when we lost 2-1 when we had a huge number of chances (as we did in every game those days), but only managed to put one away.

Great to be reminded of Paul Stanclffe total model professional.

How we could do with somebody similar now

Game 3: 1971: 42 years ago : 1-0 (Woodward) :)

Was that the one where Woody scored direct from a corner? I remember seeing that on Match of the Day - or ITV on the Sunday, one of the two...

Chris Guthrie's scored three - Chris Guthrie's scored three-eee-eee How shit must you be? Chris Guthrie's scored three.

Ah, if only Sloop John B was around in the 70's.... oh, hang on a minute..

There you go.

One of my favourite away trips! I was sat on the other corner of the stand where the cameras were. I never tire of seeing this clipping, seeing the joy of Blades fans and the bemused looks of the Leicester fans behind the goal. I was reasonably happy that we were drawing with about 5 minutes left. When the ball went in, there was a fraction of a second of confusion at what had happened (similar to the fans reaction behind the goal) before we realised that we had scored. My dad and his friend (who travelled with us) went berserk and hugged each other (my dad never really liked hugging a male but didnt mind in that moment of joy!). I asked my dad who had scored and he replied "Woodward!". At that time I didnt think it was possible to score direct from a corner. I think the Green Un headline was "WOODWARD CORNERS IT"

7 years ago today: 2006

A 1-0 win over Bury courtesy of Christian Nade's first goal for the Blades.
Nade became better known for scoring the final league goal of 2006 when we beat Arsenal 1-0.
Nade is currently a non playing, and consequently a non scoring striker in Scotland.
He'd feel right at home back here

On the cover Del boy models the new horrendous Junior away kit from that season.
