That match was played on a Saturday night. Dont know why. The other time I remember us playing on a Saturday night was the 2-1 win at Burnley in January 1974. It was strange because between Jan 1st and 7th March 1974 it was the "Three day week" an we were suppose to conserve electricity and the kick off time for most most matches during that time were an hour early

I'll step up to the mark....

No programmes, but on this day:

1972: A Peterborough United Watney Cup SF won 4-0 (Mackenzie, Dearden, Woodward pen, Hemsley). TC was sent off and thus was suspended at the start of the proper season

1975: H Blackburn Anglo-Scottish Cup won 3-1 (Woodward, Eddy pen, Badger (or possibly an OG from Parkes). A false dawn.

1979: A Cambridge United Anglo-Scottish Cup won 1-0 (Flood). This was particularly galling as a 0-1 defeat at Cambridge at the end of the previous season had more or less relegated us.

1980: H Hull City Anglos-Scottish Cup won 2-1 (Hatton 2). Bob's first goals

The ref sending TC off in the 1st half of the match (just after MacKenzie's goal) was Clive "the book" Thomas. TC did a late tackle on Tommy Robson so Thomas decided to to send TC off rather than caution him. TC was suspended for the first 3 league games of the season (Birmingham (a)- won 2-1, L**ds (h) lost 2-0 and Newcastle (h) lost 2-1). I remember a fan in the BLUT moaning towards the end of the Newcastle game and shouting "We are missing Currie badly".

That Blackburn programme shows ostensibly a pretty strong line up, but Currie and Colquhoun didn't play in the first couple of games of the league season. I believe they were suspended, but why was that?

I had forgotten that TC didnt play in the Derby County game but I can now remember seeing a photo of him in his casual clothes at the centre of the pitch with the other Blades players waving at the crowd just before the kick off. Looking at the Complete Records book it stated that TC was suspended (but the book didnt say Colquhoun was suspended) for the first two league games but didnt say why he was suspended. Maybe he had too many bookings towards the end of the previous season?

Colquhoun was suspended as well. Furphy mentions it in his column in the programme for the followjg game v Arsenal.

It was actually when Colquhoun and Currie got back in the team for the game at Old Trafford the Saturday after the Derby game that things went downhill - 10 defeats in the following 11 games. Which was strange as the team at OT was exactly the same as the team that had finished the previous season so strongly, apart from Guthrie replacing Dearden - surely Chris didn't have that much of an influence?

Guthrie was strong in the air and at that time it seemed a good idea to sign him as it was thought he would get to the end of many of Woody's fine crosses.

I remember watching Big Chris training on the Ball Inn Ground pre-season thinking we had a world beater.....how wrong could I have been. :)

Taking up the baton again.

Today:

1972: Watney Cup final at Bristol Rovers - drew 0-0 and then lost 6-7 on pens with everyone scoring until Hemsley missed the vital one. Its on Youtube

1978: A Oldham Anglo-Scottish Cup - L0-1.

1980: H Grimsby Anglo-Scottish Cup L0-1

Not a good day all round....

United v Wolves 1st team and reserves
View attachment 6202 View attachment 6203

In those days, if the first team are playing at home then the reserve team play in an away match on the same day or vice versa and quite often both our 1st team and our reserves play against the same club (if the 1st teams are in the same division and the reserves play in the Central League). In Sept 1951, Derek Dooley got dropped from the Wendy 1st team for the Sheffield derby match at BDTBL (we won 7-3) so he played in the reserves derby match at S6 on the same day

One for the old un's and one for the young un's in today's offering:

64 years ago, 1949, a 4-2 win at Coventry, with goals from Jones, Smith, Collindrige and Hagan. And 9 years ago, United's first win at Deepdale for 49 years, playing 80 minutes with 10 men after jags was sent off. Paddy saved the resulting penalty and Andy Gray scored the only goal

Wonder what Coventry looked like in 1949. Not sure how long it took for the city to recover from the horrific bombing during WW2

1974 A Newcastle D2-2 (Eddy pen, Speight)
1976 A Luton L0-2
1979 A Colchester L0-1
1981 A Chesterfield (Group Cup) D1-1 (Trusson)

2012 A Coventry D1-1 (Blackman)

Not a good day, on the whole....

1993 A Everton L2-4 (Whitehouse, Cork)

Enter Jostein Flo our natural replacement for Deano!

Dane scored after less than a minute and Ablett should have walked for a "prof. foul" not long after (Dermott Gallagher bottling the decision at the Gwladys end). Flo missed a sitter in the second half with the ball bouncing off his shin in a melee about 6 yards out. A sign that he was no replacement for Deane at all, a dark day indeed!

Yes, Whitehouse got an award for the quickest goal that month,

On the 1999 disatrous Man City game, Tracey was sent off for a prof foul which led to Man City getting a pen when they were 1-0 up. Sub goalie Aidan Davison came on and the first thing he did was pick the ball out of the net. He conceded a further 4, which I believe is a record number of goals conceded by a kepper on his debut.
