Purely from a collectors view today, as we have the much sought after United/Chelsea programme from the 1954/5 season.

A monday tea-time fixture. Expect to pay £200 plus for one in good condition. :)

United lost 2-1 with Graham Shaw scoring for the Blades.

Taylor gets sent off, and Wolves equalize with an 89th minute penalty.
White had opened the scoring and wolves looked to have grabbed a share of the spoils before Petr Katchuoro popped up deep into stoppage time to score his first goal in english football and win it for the Blades.

It was Salmons' league debut. He had played in the League Cup game v Walsall on 26/10/66.

United 2 Wigan 2

United are outplayed in the first 45 minutes and trail Wigan by 2-0. Heffernan is stretchered off after an hour, as United resort to playing with only 3 at the back. With just five minutes left Edwards pulls one back with the aid of a missed handball in the build up. In a game short on stoppages the ref plays an incredible eight minutes extra which enables Kenworthy to bundle Stancliffes header in for the equaliser.

28 years ago today 1985, and a 5-1 hammering of neighbours, Rotherham in the 2nd leg, 1st Rd of the Milk Cup (League Cup).

Colin Morris, and a couple each from Peter Withe and Joe Bolton.

After football, Bolton went trucking. Whilst Withe went coaching, ultimately getting fired from every job for being ugly.

Ah yes big Joe Bolton. Joe, Joe Joe. Remember the chants.

A league Cup 2nd Round encounter which ended in victory by 4-1.
Billy Hodgson with a couple, Doc pace and a Graham Shaw penalty.
United would get dumped out in the next round at Gigg Lane.

~i thought that too. Just shows how far we've dropped.:(

To be fair, in those days we only had one sub, so the top squad players would be playing in the reserves rather than sat on the bench for the first team.

Had there been 7 subs on 25th Sept 1971, I reckon the bench would have been McAlister, Heaton, Barlow, Addison, Barnwell, Ford, Reece

Sept 28th 1974. Blades 1 Liverpool 0. TC picks up the ball in our half, looks up and then delivers a perfect left footed long pass to Woody on the right. Woody, as cool as a cucumber, races away to the penalty box, Ray Clemence comes out of the goal to narrow the angle but Woody calmly places the ball into the net. I was at boarding school that weekend and was hoping that there would be heavy rain in Newbury on the Sunday which would cancel the compulsory Sunday walk so that I could see the goal in ITV's Big Match. It didnt rain and after my walk I came up to see the Head Boy (6th formers were allowed to watch TV on Sunday afternoons instead of Sunday Walk) who described the goal to me and he has always admired TC. The photo of Woody's goal in that match was in the next issue of Shoot! and I had it pinned up in my dormitory

The programme from the game.

24 page programme with the unpopular shape.

Supporters could buy cricket seats with SU engraved in the Ironwork for a Fiver as memento's. (I'd would have liked one of them).

Adverts included DC Cook, Jack Archer and Doncasters (who are still operating)

Beer available at the Lane Social. Stones, Carling and Worthington E

Tomorrow's United, (one for the future) featured Albert Gilderthorpe

United win 5-1 at Pompey on a wednesday night , and so repeated the result they had achieved the previous season. Woody helped himself to a hat-trick, and Gil Reece and Billy Dearden with the others.

Pompey's scorer was ex-Blade, David Munks. Hodgy was injured for the game and reserve keeper Graeme Crawford made one of his few appearances for us that night. John Tudor played at CB (he played in that position when he was a Coventry player) and I think it was Colquhoun who was ruled out with injury

we beat Man U 1-0 at BDTBL on 30th Sept 1972. With about 10 minutes left at the Lane End, Woody got chopped down in the penalty box. It looked a blatant penalty and the Blades fans and players were furious with the ref for deciding against awarding the penalty. Woody was lying still on the ground injured and he had a lengthy treatment from Cec Coldwell (with the "magic sponge"). The ref looked sheepish as the boos were ringing aloud around the Lane. In the final minute, Woody took a corner and the ball was going nowhere and I didnt notice any challenges but all of a sudden, the ref blew his whistle and pointed to the penalty spot. Players from both teams looked at each other in puzzlement and so was the crowd. The ref signalled that one of Man U defenders had put his hands one of the Blades shoulders denying him a chance to jump! Woody (still looking in a bad mood) gratefully put the ball on the penalty spot and his anger for what had happened 10 minutes earlier matched the ferocity of the ball entering the net!

In the link below, scroll down to the bottom of the page and there is a photo of him in action on 30th sept 1972!

Blades top of the League and unbeaten.

Step forward that man Best.

The old man always said that the atmosphere that day was the best he'd witnessed at any game in watching United since 48'. It was mum's birthday, I don't know how he managed it

I cried like a baby when Best scored! I think my dad bought the tickets for the match and we got inside the ground at about 1.30pm. There is a thread somewhere discussing this match

We're in York today, and Dick Turpin rode again as I paid 25p for what is probably the worst programme in history. A fold out, chinese menu style programme full of adverts.

United trailed 3-2 in the second half, goal by Bob Hatton and a Kenworthy penalty, but Trusson powered in two headers late on to give United the points with a 4-3 victory.

Team: Waugh, Ryan, Kenworthy, Richardson, MacPhail, McAlle, Neville, Trusson, Edwards, Hatton, Charles. Sub: Garner

I don't know where you got McHale from as no.6. We signed him the following season. It was Stewart "Beckenbaure" Houston :-)

You're right Daz but you're also wrong.

I was writing this quickly, you are correct it wasn't McHale, it was McAlle

You've got me there.

Here's a question. McAlle scored one goal for United. What is strange about that goal?

Was expecting our 3-2 win over Wendy in 1970! I went to the York game too. Cooperman ran on the pitch to congratulate Bob Hatton on his goal!
