Was ex

Was expecting our 3-2 win over Wendy in 1970! I went to the York game too. Cooperman ran on the pitch to congratulate Bob Hatton on his goal!

It was purely a programme choice Silent. I've still not seen one as bad (York)

Here's the United/Wed one. The programme was produced with a 1911 reproduction programme inside it (see image). And to get the hat-trick, a ticket from the game.

Blimey, 40p...

42 years ago....October 2nd 1971.
Blades top of the League and unbeaten.

Step forward that man Best.

The old man always said that the atmosphere that day was the best he'd witnessed at any game in watching United since 48'. It was mum's birthday, I don't know how he managed it

Thousands were locked out
View attachment 6416

I was one of those locked out but managed to get in when the gates opened at the end. only to see Best's goal.

In the crush to get in a police horse trod on my heel and, after the gates were closed, I went to try and get some first aid from the police.

They asked what had happened

I told them that a horse had trodden on my heel.

They asked if it was a police horse.

I said " No, lots of us have come over the Snake on horseback"

I did not get any first aid for some reason!

The photo is from the BDTBL Sheffield derby in October 1962. Match ended in a 2-2 draw. Cec Coldwell is the Blade winning the tackle, Brian Richardson is the Blade nearer to the camera. I think the blond Wendy player on the left. No idea who the distraught looking Wendy striker is.

Back to the 1970 game. Eddie Colquhoun headed in a Woody free kick to give us the lead early in the game. Shortly after that Bill Dearden increased our lead heading in a Woody corner. We were comfortable in the 1st half attacking the Kop End even though it were the first time we got a goal in that end. Shortly half time, a harmless looking Wendy attack led to an own goal by skipper Eddie (papers credited the goal to Tommy Craig). This lifted Wendy up and canny Scot winger Jackie Sinclair broke through on the right, Hodgy came out of goal and Sinclair rolled the ball past the keeper to equalise (at this point I was feeling glum sitting in the BLUT and I remember looking at my cousin, David Beardow, who came to the match with me and my dad, was also looking glum sitting forward resting his head on his hand). Harris then brought on sub John Tudor in place of Gil Reece. Not long after that Tudor had a half chance but he slightly mishit his shot, all the fans in front of me stood up blocking my view of the ball but I could see Wendy's keeper Peter Grummitt, looking horrified and looking over to his right shoulder and then the Blades fans went into raptures making me realise that we had got the winner with a soft shot. My dad had a good view of the goal and told me that Tudor's shot went through Grummitt's legs.

This is the photo of the goal although Grummitt was supposed to be in the picture

5 years ag0.....October 4th 2008.

A 3-0 win over Bristol City in front of over 24,000 (be lucky to get half that tonight :()

A couple from BT and an own goal from city's Liam Fontaine.

Collecting wise, the square shape is a nightmare. Hard to find in excellent condition because the natural instinct is to bend them (like the 78/9 season).

Are you one of thos people who puts all your programmes in plastic bags and never read them in case they get damaged :-)

35 years ago today.....October 7th.

I've gone for a 3-2 victory over Sunderland from 1978. I actually remember this one, (memory not quite what it was) :(.

I was on the Kop and the away end was rocking. A couple of goals from Anderson and a Steve Finneston effort won it for United.

The programme was the horrible square shape.

That game was on Match of the Day - one of Anderson's goals was goal of the month. There's youtube footage of it I think.

Thanks for that lads, I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Three great goals, players beating players at pace, accurate crosses, getting to the byline and pulling it back, suggest DW starts having a 'film club' at Shirecliffe.

Also we beat Arsenal 1-0 at BDTBL on this day in 1972. Bill Dearden got the goal by reacting quicker than keeper Geoff Barnett to the ball that was crossed into the box at the Lane end. The biggest cheer on that day was the sending off of Alan Ball for his 2nd booking (he took Trevor Hockey rather than for the ball and his first booking was for tripping TC). Ball seemed to be stunned at the fans joyful reaction (we had not forgotten him for sitting on the ball in our 5-0 defeat 8-9 months earlier- TC did that revenge 11 months later) and slow hanclapped at the fans in a sarcastic way

The front cover photo is from the friendly match against Sunderland a week before the start of the season (Sabella didnt have his work permit yet). We won 2-1 and I think Steve Finnieston scored both goals for us

Anglo-Scottish Cup actually.

Got you back for Bobby Campbell :-)

Two Programmes today from this day October 8th, and a couple of quiz questions.

A 3-1 League Cup defeat at Luton 28 years ago and a 1-1 draw at Field Mill 36 years ago.

At Luton, what was unique about Keith Edwards consolation goal?, and in the Mansfield game which future Blades manager was playing for the opposition?

It was Edwards'first goal of the season and must have been the latest point in the season he ever scored his first goal. Billy McEwan was playing for Mansfield.

Morning Darren, I'll give you Billy McEwan, but you'll need to try harder on the Luton one. :D

Edwards' goal at Luton was our first goal on astroturf?. I remember reading about our keeper Paul Tomlinson taking too many steps or something like that and the ref awarded a free kick which resulted in a goal for Luton

I wasnt at the Mansfield game as I was at school but I remember watching the goals on tv. The Blades fans were packed behind a goal and when our goal went in (Speight's shot was deflected by a Mansfield defender) the celebration wave looked really spectacular rivalling the legendary Liverpool Kop goal celebratory wave we often saw on tv in the 1960s and 1970s

Burridge was in goal and he was injured and replaced by Cockerill.

Indeed it was,

Can't say I paticularly liked Luton, broke down their once and got lost on some housing estate that made Burngreave look like Beverley Hills.

They still yearn to have the plastic pitch back. Three visits to Wemblee, 7th in the top tier while it was there, then they dug it up and its been downhill ever since;)

Given that we'll be shortly playing them next season, unless they too get relegated, todays offering is from 48 years ago...October 9th 1965, and a trip to Northampton's County ground, in what would prove to be Northampton's only season in the top tier.

Not the best condition, I've ever seen but still, ......small pocket sized programme.

United won 1-0, with Ken Mallender getting the goal.

Northampton Town in 1960s

1961 promoted from 4th division to 3rd division
1963 promoted to 2nd division
1965 promoted to 1st division
1966 relegated to 2nd division
1967 relegated to 3rd division
1969 back in 4th division!

26 years ago...October 10th 1987.

A 3-2 win at Maine Road.

Goals from ex Norton Woodseats player, David Frain, a Colin Morris Penalty and Tony Philliskirk
