Down memory Lane.....this day

My second away match (competitive matches only) was in the 1-0 win at Birmingham in October 10th 1970. It was my first time on travelling in the Football Special Train. I was amazed to see a train filled with fans wearing red and white scarfs, drinking beer and all that. Highlights of the match at St Andrews was one of the two selected matches to be shown on MOTD that evening. I remember in the 1st half we had a free kick outside the box (it looks that it was rehearsed from training sessions at Ball Inn), after two or three short passes that confused the Birmingham defensive wall, Ted Hemsley's shot crashed against the underside of the bar and then bounced back into play (MOTD showed this bit at the start of the programme as they usually show a trailer of a near miss for each match before showing the proper highlights). At half time my dad informed me that Blackpool were winning 3-0 at home to FA Cup holders, Chelsea which was a big surprise. Our goal was scored in the 2nd half by John Tudor who crashed in the final touch of a move involving 5 or 6 passes. After the match on arriving the Birmingham train station, the Blades fans cheered at hearing the news that Wendy were hammered 5-1 at home to Luton (I think Malcolm MacDonald scored all 5). In the train, I noticed a fan reading a Saturday football newspaper so I tried to scan the scores and one that attacted me was "Blackpool 3 Chelsea 4"

Such a good read, I read it twice :). Good stuff, Silent

43 years ago today....September 30th 1970

United win 5-1 at Pompey on a wednesday night , and so repeated the result they had achieved the previous season. Woody helped himself to a hat-trick, and Gil Reece and Billy Dearden with the others.

First ever away game for me. Only saw one other Blades fan in the ground. 0-0 at half time. Went back home to the Isle of Wight. How many Blades fans travel by ferry to see a game!

we beat Man U 1-0 at BDTBL on 30th Sept 1972. With about 10 minutes left at the Lane End, Woody got chopped down in the penalty box. It looked a blatant penalty and the Blades fans and players were furious with the ref for deciding against awarding the penalty. Woody was lying still on the ground injured and he had a lengthy treatment from Cec Coldwell (with the "magic sponge"). The ref looked sheepish as the boos were ringing aloud around the Lane. In the final minute, Woody took a corner and the ball was going nowhere and I didnt notice any challenges but all of a sudden, the ref blew his whistle and pointed to the penalty spot. Players from both teams looked at each other in puzzlement and so was the crowd. The ref signalled that one of Man U defenders had put his hands one of the Blades shoulders denying him a chance to jump! Woody (still looking in a bad mood) gratefully put the ball on the penalty spot and his anger for what had happened 10 minutes earlier matched the ferocity of the ball entering the net!

Mmm looks like an Everton shirt to me (top pick where Woody is doing his Jimmy Sirrel facial expression), not Man U but maybe wrong.

I'm pretty sure that was the match that was 1-1 after a few minutes. We couldn't find anywhere to park and were only 5 minutes late but missed the first 2 goals.

A 3-2 win at Maine Road.

Goals from ex Norton Woodseats player, David Frain,

We signed Frain when the club was Dronfield United. Norton Woodseats changed its name to DU in the mid 1980s hoping that it will draw in more spectators. It didnt catch on so they returned its name to NW before folding some years later

53 years ago 1960...United's first ever match in the League Cup.

We go out 3-1 at the mighty Bury, with John Nibloe scoring our first goal in the competition.

Nibloe would tragically die of his injuries sustained in a car crash near Stocksbridge in 1964. He was aged 25.

12th October 1974 Blades 2 Everton 2

Dearden finishes off a crafty low cross from Woody to put us ahead. Woody then scores a delightful goal with a lob of great execution. Not long after that (I was sat in the BLUT- on the A row just behind the "Head for Houseleys" advert)) there was a massive punch up between Blades and Everton fans in the BLLT with policemen diving in and dragging out a random selection of spectators before the fighting died away. In the 2nd half Mick Lyons pull a goal back for Everton and then Mick Buckley scores the equaliser

13th October 1973. Stoke 1 Blades 2

Eddie Colquhoun scored a spectacular own goal to give Stoke the lead. Stoke attacked quickly on the right and sent in a cross that was headed against the bar (I think) but the onrushing Colquhoun didnt have time to get out of the way of the rebound as it hit his head and it bounced high into the net. In the 2nd half we were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box. Woody found a gap in the Stoke's defensive wall and fired in the equaliser with a low shot that went through the wall. Stewart Scullion (making one of his rare appearances that year before moving back to Wafford) got the winner by firing in a swerving drive from the right of the penalty spot

Today 47 years ago 1966 and the opening of the new Bramall Lane Stand.

United win 2-0 against Sunderland, Mick Jones and Gil Reece the scorers.

Underneath is a picture of it during erection.

what surprised me about the BLUT is that when you watch Blades v Northampton (match was on 1/1/1966) on youtube, the Bramall Lane End was not even at the start of the construction, spectators were standing there like it had always been pre 1966. The BLUT was opened in mid October 1966 and do anyone remember when did the club start building the BLUT and that spectators were not allowed to watch matches until the building was complete? I would have thought that it was a difficult stand to build that needed more than 10 months of building work

Today it probably would take more than 10 months. But then I imagine that today it wold have a canterlevered roof, so wol be more complicted.

I also imagine that the Health and Saftey ules were somewhat more relaxed, making for aquicker, albeit moe dangerous, build.

Cheers Selly Oak, wonder if they started building the BLUT after the end of the 1965/66 season. If so, then it would mean about 5 to 6 months of building work and I agree with you that if it happened nowadays, it would take longer than that

October 16th 1976, Blades 1 Fulham 1. George Best, Rodney Marsh and Bobby Moore played for Fulham and this fixture drew a crowd (28,700 plus) that was almost twice or average attendance for that season. Jimmy Johnstone said that he was looking forward to the game and he didnt drink for a week leading up to the game and it was the only game he played very well for us. Woody gave us the lead when he received a pass 30 yards away from goal, he sold Bobby Moore the dummy and then fired in a powerful left footed shot (Woody's weaker foot) that keeper Peter Mellor had no chance of saving. Rodney Marsh said after the match "there is no one who hits the ball harder than Woody". John Mitchell equalised for Fulham, beating two or three of our players in the penalty box and firing the ball past Jim Brown.

We managed to put the kop stand up between May and August 1991.

It shows.

Nice one an excuse to show the 76/7 cover

17th October 1970. Blades 3 Orient 1
Before the start of the season my dad was showing me a Sunday newspaper article predicting the 2nd division table for the end of the 1970-71 season. The journalist was predicting that the Blades would finish at the top of the table and that Orient (who got promoted as Champions of 3rd division) would finish at bottom. A week or two later I was watching Chesterfield play at home to Aston Villa (yes, they were in 3rd division) in the opening day of the 1970-71 league season. At half time in Saltergate, the scoreboard indicated that the Blades were winning 1-0 at Orient so it looks like that the Blades would win the fixture at Brisbane Road. Coming back home from Villa’s 3-2 win my dad wasn’t able to find out how the Blades had gone on and after dropping me off at home, he went somewhere else. A Wendy friend called round my house asking me to play and he revealed to me that the Blades had lost 3-1 which stunned me and I was thinking about that predicted table my dad showed me a week or two earlier! Fast forward two months later, Orient came to the Lane and took the lead at half time with a Mick Bullock header. Early in the 2nd half, attacking the Lane End, Geoff Salmons hit a soft looking cross cum shot from the left, Orient’s defender, Terry Mancini seemed to get into a poor understanding with Ray Goddard as the ball trickled into the net for the equaliser. Some papers credited the goal as a Mancini own goal. John Tudor then game us the lead with a strong shot (his third goal in three games) and TC then scored a beauty with an unstoppable blast from outside the box high into the net

8 years ago today....October 18th 2005, and a joyous trip to Millwall.

United run out 4-0 winners, with Danny Ebber (2), Vincent Pericard and Alan Quinn with the goals.
