But we will need flexibility in systems next year.

Duffy was formerly a winger too.

Good players are good players.
Patrick Roberts is very different
And I don't disagree with the flexability point but it'll be hard to attract players who know what system we play and expect to be first teamers.

People's valuations are crazy.
He's a highly touted youngster from a huge club, plays for his country and helped get us promoted.... anyone who thinks we'd get him for less that £3m is mad.

No better time than preseason to bring players in and give them time to adjust to how the team plays. We currently have a first team squad of about 16 players, so we have quite a few players to bring in. I can't see us paying out £15m+ for 3 or 4 players, so we will have to continue looking at rough diamonds and maybe push the boat for 1 big signing. Roberts fits in with a lot of Wilder's previous signings. At or previously at a big club, not had a look in and represented their country at age group level.

But doesn't fit in with Wilder's signings (apart from Nathan Thomas who was an unmitigated success) in the fact he's a winger. Out and out.

Are we still talking about Dowell here?

EDIT: Patrick Roberts, just read further up.

Did Duffy, O'Connell, Basham, Cranie, Stevens, Freeman etc play their current roles before joining us? Some signings will adapt some won't, its more likely that someone who has a similar background to Roberts will be able to adapt than a League Two (Thomas) player.

You have to have a certain skillset to play that role, it's as much about retaining the ball as it is making things happen.
We struck gold with Duffy and have struggled to replicate it since despite several signings, I don't see Roberts as that type. I have seen him play for Celtic a lot too, good player, but I can't see it working for him here.

Available for £4m according to the Sun this morning. Got to be worth a bid.

£4 million would be an absolute bargain
If anybody can get this lad firing on all cylinders it would be Wilder

And possibly Brendon Rogers

If this kid is fit and confident he's 10x the player Duffy is, but he is a confidence player. Wilder would have him full of himself before long and if £4 million is true that's not even a risk financially.
He can play anywhere in the opponents half
He's quick, skilful, quick feet, quick in thought, direct and scores goals.

Well worth that sort of money

I would take KD back for £2.5m. No more than that. He’s a decent player with room to grow. Not worth £4m yet.

How can a £4m (+ salary) outlay not be a risk financially, especially to Utd who, admittedly, will have a much larger budget that in previous seasons but it will still be one of, if not the smallest in the league and the amount quoted would in all likelihood take up a fair chunk of it?

The guy is coming off an incredibly disappointing season with Girona where he was inconsistent at best, failed to cement a starting place, failed to score and the side ended up being relegated. Most importantly, he plays RW and some on here are already trying to convert him to the #10 role. Just because Duffy was able to do it, certainly doesn't mean that all wingers will be able to do so.

Good luck to him if he gets a Prem club and does well but IMHO I'd say there's actually a big risk that he won't especially if he's asked to play in a unfamiliar position.

Getting Dowell Hogan and Madine for around the £10m mark would be a no brainer , as they know the system and know they have a lot to prove . They're already 6months ahead of any new signing and 8 goals between them at the 1-0 stage of the season was crucial.

Sawyers- probably about right.
Freeman- £10 million at a minimum.
Dack- £20 million at a minimum.
Robinson- didn’t know it was the last year of his contract. £7-8 million might be right.
No thanks

He’s 21 and has been quality whenever he’s been played in his proper position

He was played left back more that no10

4 million is a bargain in today’s market

Ok maybe I'm on my own on this but didn't feel he pulled any trees up during his short spell with us and at times didn't show the necessary work rate to convince CW he was worth pushing the boat out for.

If I was Dowell I'd be doing press ups all summer.

Because he will always be a player worth more than £4 million
As for wages, are we only going to sign players that play for nowt ?

If £4 million plus wages is too much of a risk we don't even belong in the Championship let alone Premier League

Roberts can play anywhere in the final third, even up front

The man to get him back to his best could be Wilder, and for £4 million plus wages (I hear players need paying in money nowadays not fags) its a no brainer

Not sure any of the January lads did themselves much justice tbh.

All probably better than what we saw.

I’d be surprised if we saw any of them back for the new season.

Well I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up and how he does (including how manu goals je creates and scores), whilst considering his fee and salary (which will be above most if not all Utd's first teamers').

You're not.

See above.

I'm not over fussed about the lad to be honest.
Messy footballer what I've seen of him.
I expect better.

I bloody hope not.

He's a lightweight, didn't do a lot, easily knocked off the ball and we're not here to groom Liverpuddles prospects for them.

I didn’t see the lad as much as others probably did but I agree with you. Very flimsy player, talented and skilful but very hot and cold.

Whoops, so he is.

Same difference though, it was the other even lighterweight Woodburn from the red Scouse.

Comment still stands.
Dowell was far far better , he looks a lot more of a goal threat than duffy dont think we ever saw him play to his best even though he was good for us.
He starts for england U21 so he must be rated very highly if we could sign him for as little as 3/4 million its a no brainer.

If he goes on loan to the championship and scores 10/15 which he would have done with us playing a full season no10 teams like ballmouth burnley will be paying 15/20 mill for him

sign him up

I agree that he's better than Woodburn but I think you're being a bit optimistic.

The fact is that he scored 2 goals for us, anything beyond this is just speculation.

Anyway, I'll leave the decisions to Chris, he's better at it than me.
