Difference between a win and a loss tonight

Should we trust Wilder with the January window though?
I haven't trusted him with big money since last time when he wasted over £120mil on players who mainly on the bench and left for free or huge losses (Bogle and Ramsdale aside). I've always said this club needs a director of football. We also need to stop relying on loan players. As soon as Gilchrist, Souttar and Rak-Sakyi return we're down to 8 players before we even start strengthening the team (not squad).

Souza was a much bigger miss to be honest. We were desperate for a midfielder to chase back and help the defence.

Agree.

We've lost the spine of our defence and the spine of our midfield.

And the players brought in to cover those positions are not good enough whatsoever.

Not even sure we have the players to cover the positions. That's the problem, we know the likes of Peck and One should be out on loan even Wilder has said as much.

After his fine performance last game, why leave Brooks out?
Showed real quality when he came on
both commentators said the same.
Yeah. Better when Brooks and Burrows were on.
But also, the starting 11 is nearly fixed at the minute. Minimal differences possible, depends who can still walk / run.

Don’t you remember the game at the lane… he got dragged all over and committed fouls to take us to 10 men…

Like he was doing against Burnley a few mins before he got injured. I like Souttar but the game was lost in midfield today
Big issue for me is when Souttar played, Anel and Gilchrist looked much better players than they've looked the last couple of games!

Without him we've got last seasons Anel back and Gilchrist is back looking like a kid in his first season of full-time football ....

“Agree that we have no recognisable tactic apart from relying on individual quality from some of our better players.
Also concerning that we have a bit of a square pegs in round holes situation having no left winger, so having to play Hamer on the left.”

Not having a go at you here but What is Brooks then? Here’s fast, pretty skilful and He’s extremely left footed…most of the league has now figured out that he will run a bit and then cut inside…but he’s never ever switched over to play left wing…why not? Why not give him a run on the left wing, get him putting crosses in like a classic left winger? Maybe then Moore would have something to score from..?
Brooks as a left winger…

Basically squad depth. We knew at the start of the season if we had a spate of injuries it would cost us and until recently we have been fortunate.

Need at least 5 quality additions in Jan if we are serious about top 2.
This. Take the best players out of any team, and against the tougher opposition defeat is the likely outcome.

We all knew the squad was wafer thin. That's no fault of Chris Wilder.

I disagree. We've been putting in performances like this since October but luck saw us grind our results. You'll never go up playing poorly and relying on luck. Wilder doesn't have a plan B.

I've said it countless times, this is the Hecky promotion season all over again. Largely poor for the majority of matches but grinding out results based on a solid defence. No plan B when plan A doesn't work. No recognisable style or tactics going forward in attack and we've rulied too heavily on loan players instead of bringing in our own.

The rot will continue unless we get some fresh bodies who can go straight into the team and not just warm the bench, and when Wilder makes effective in game changes that doesn't just involve sticking with plan A but making like for lkke changes ala Paul Heckinbottom.
Hecky had the brilliance of Illiman to get us up…Wilder hasn’t got anything even close to that.

That was me and I stand by it. He changed after that game and we never went for teams full throttle ever again under Wilder.

I agree and I have been saying that for a while and that this sh*t housing results papered over the cracks.

Because it was obvious that if we set up with defensive minded team selections then we would not win and the horrible feeling about us not winning against Burnley West Brom and now Sunderland and Watford is coming true.

If we set up like that against Watford we will lose as well and I fully expect Wilder to do exactly that because he is stubborn and that is what lead to his downfall last time.

Peck has shown he’s good enough at Championship level and should playing this season. He was coming along nicely when Blaster and Vini were fit.

It’s too much to rely on him to play very match, but we ain’t got any other choice right now.

Get a midfielder signed and give the lad a rest/smaller role.

I don't think Villa ever came back from 3 down at the lane did they? It was at Villa park, plus didn't we get promoted and then finish 9th in the prem after that?
How can he have never been the same?
Yeah I ment away sorry it was the same game Sharp got a hat trick we completely folded in the last ten minutes.

We can't rely on Peck and if we had the dollarydoos we would sign more than one midfielder this transfer window. Possibly even ship Peck out on loan.

He’s played well this season but he’s not ready to start week in week out. He’s definitely good enough to be on the bench.

We're back to having the defence that conceded 100+ goals last season, and it shows....
Jack Robinson, shit scared every time he receives the ball, his 1st thought is backwards & let someone else deal with it,I thought he'd come through that period but he's gone backwards,oh & we're playing with 10 men with Keiffer Moore in the starting 11,he's shocking & lazy to boot

People might disagree with me when I say this, but I think that's the best performance I've seen from us in the last few games (probably since Oxford).

All that game came down to was chances wasted, yes there were mistakes on all three of the goals but on another day we could have easily got something out of that.

We've got 5 first team players (from our strongest 11) missing (plus a few bench players missing as well), reserve players running on fumes and we're still well in the mix after 25 games.

Souttar, Arblaster, Souza, JRS and Campbell, all of whom would have walked into tonights starting 11 without doubt.

Brooks as a left winger…
Mate, i pointed this out after about 3 games of the season and got ridiculed and accused by the pitchfork brigade round these parts of never actually watching us play otherwise I'd know Brooks and Rak Sakyi play RW.... Surely there's a world where Brooks and Rak Sakyi play in the same team and interchange from wing to wing?!?!

Not necessarily putting it down to individuals but we're severely lacking leadership right now.

There's no way under Sharp or Blasters captaincy we'd have lost tonight.

So who steps up? As I said in another post Wilder needs to bring in a LEADER who'll motivate, scream and remind players what they're playing for and keep them switched on.

Chris Wilder set the tone he picked the team and he resorted to going defensive and yet again it cost us.

Someone made the observation during the West Brom game that ever since Villa at Home when Villa came from 3 down at the lane he has never been the same.

That is Leeds Boro Sunderland Burnley where we have resorted to defensive tactics and it cost us dearly.
This is true but villa was away

And that would put is in exactly the same predicament that I stated.
Players like Peck, Moore, Robbo, Brewster, One, Shacks, McCallum aren't going to get us promoted.
They were well on track to be promoted before we had crucial injuries.
None of these would play regularly if all were fit. I accept that they will be needed from time to time, but they would be fine in those roles.
Now we need a couple of quality players to go straight into the match day team. A couple more would be a bonus.

Poor defending & no pace at the top of the field without Campbell & Rak Sakyi .
With out the pace we look very slow & one dimensional

A belated Christmas gift to Sunderland. So fucking frustrating. Sunderland were poor and were there for the taking all night.

I’ve seen too many incidences like that from Robinson to suggest he’s not a very good footballer. Lower Champ at best.

Peck I’m just gonna give him the benefit of the doubt.

Moore, inexcusable performance from him tonight.
You give your side no credit at all by saying that we were poor. Sunderland had a deliberate tactic, for each half and it worked for us. On another night a slice of luck makes it 2 v 2, its game on and our defensive shell has to be unravelled by us.

I could say that SUFC were suckered a bit into going gang ho at SAFC in the second half when the tactic was obvious - defend - draw SUFC in and catch them on the break. But then again it's very difficult when a team invites you in not to oblige.

The margin between success and failure at this level is very small and it would have taken very little change of luck for it to be 2 v 2.

It was our night last night - but who knows what Saturday will bring?

that's football.

Agree Souttar is a huge loss, but we're gonna have to get over that because he aint coming back. I think Souza is the bigger loss and we look so much more fragile defensively without him. Hopefully he'll be back soon.
