Difference between a win and a loss tonight

A belated Christmas gift to Sunderland. So fucking frustrating. Sunderland were poor and were there for the taking all night.

I’ve seen too many incidences like that from Robinson to suggest he’s not a very good footballer. Lower Champ at best.

Peck I’m just gonna give him the benefit of the doubt.

Moore, inexcusable performance from him tonight.

The Anel and JLT partnership is one we do not want to have going forward in defence. It's shit, always has been shit and it's the reason we signed the big man Souttar.

I disagree. We've been putting in performances like this since October but luck saw us grind our results. You'll never go up playing poorly and relying on luck. Wilder doesn't have a plan B.

I've said it countless times, this is the Hecky promotion season all over again. Largely poor for the majority of matches but grinding out results based on a solid defence. No plan B when plan A doesn't work. No recognisable style or tactics going forward in attack and we've rulied too heavily on loan players instead of bringing in our own.

The rot will continue unless we get some fresh bodies who can go straight into the team and not just warm the bench, and when Wilder makes effective in game changes that doesn't just involve sticking with plan A but making like for lkke changes ala Paul Heckinbottom.

At last some common sense. What Wilder thought in buying Moore God knows. CW always shit at buying forwards. They are either crocked, shit or both.

Chris Wilder set the tone he picked the team and he resorted to going defensive and yet again it cost us.

Someone made the observation during the West Brom game that ever since Villa at Home when Villa came from 3 down at the lane he has never been the same.

That is Leeds Boro Sunderland Burnley where we have resorted to defensive tactics and it cost us dearly.

Souttar, Campbell, Souza and Arblaster all out injured and we've been playing poorly recently. I went into tonight expecting defeat so that's why I'm not too mad. It's more the performances that are annoying me more than the results.

That was me and I stand by it. He changed after that game and we never went for teams full throttle ever again under Wilder.

Robinson should count himself incredibly lucky to have lasted this long with us. I’d be embarrassed to call him my leader. Anel picking and choosing when to defend cost us dearly as well. Both centre halves entirely at fault for us losing that.

Luck? You don’t win 15 matches by luck.

Basically squad depth. We knew at the start of the season if we had a spate of injuries it would cost us and until recently we have been fortunate.

Need at least 5 quality additions in Jan if we are serious about top 2.

Interesting post.

I'd say the grinding out results aspect wasn't luck because we were doing it all the time and hardly looking like conceding.
In many of our 1-0 and 2-0 wins, the defence has been quite busy but Cooper has had little to do, so it's not really luck.

My fear is that the Robinson and Ahmedhodzic pairing were traumatised last season after we conceded over 100 in just 38 matches.
We needed someone like Souttar and I think his very presence (along with the presence of Cooper) totally transformed our defence.
For starters having 6 ft 7 Souttar, 6ft 5 Ahmedhodzic and 6ft 5 Moore meant we could defend corners and crosses all day long and never concede.

Basically with Souttar in the team we win loads of matches 1-0, would have probably beat WBA and Sunderland tonight with Soutar.
Without Souttar these wins turns into more draws and the occasional defeat, we need another top rated commanding centre half replacement.

Agree that we have no recognisable tactic apart from relying on individual quality from some of our better players.
Also concerning that we have a bit of a square pegs in round holes situation having no left winger, so having to play Hamer on the left.
Then we have a striker in Brewster but keep trying him out in midfield.
What is massively worrying is that we have little squad depth and we have so many players out currently injured.

Wilder might argue he's been fire fighting regards the number of fit players and not able to implement a style or set tactics yet.

Okay, genuine question. Throughout November and December how many matches have we played where we dominated teams from start to finish and were the better side for the majority of the 90 minutes?

I can name one. Oxford.

Like it or not, we have been riding our luck and we have won games on luck. We beat Sunderland at home undeservedly. They bossed us from start to finish.

We had a rock solid defence that gave us a good start in matches, but we have been poor with the ball all season.

8 shots on target in total in our last 3 matches says it all for me.

The difference was/is the not good enoughs:

Robinson
Peck
Moore

And the not good enoughs first half:

Anel
Mcallum
Brewster

You can’t have 6 players 5/10 or below for 45 mins of top level champ football and expect owt.

We need to be at it from the first minute to the last … unfortunately we never seem able to do it

We're back to having the defence that conceded 100+ goals last season, and it shows....

It's at least something Wilder will want to sort immediately as he doesn't trust the partnership either hence why we ended the game with Anel at RB and RND as a CB.

You don’t win as many matches as we have by luck. No one is that lucky.

There are obviously issues and areas that need improving, but I’m not going to start suggesting we’re now a bad team requiring drastic changes.

Should we trust Wilder with the January window though?

…or just getting some of our missing players fit.

The loss of the spine of our team - Soutts, Vini and Campbell - is why we’ve not won tonight or indeed over Christmas.

Agree.

We've lost the spine of our defence and the spine of our midfield.

And the players brought in to cover those positions are not good enough whatsoever.

I don't think Villa ever came back from 3 down at the lane did they? It was at Villa park, plus didn't we get promoted and then finish 9th in the prem after that?
How can he have never been the same?
