DCL Coming Back

What about being in the right place, at the right time? Latching on to crosses, pouncing on mistakes. There's much more to the game, and far more sources of goals than 1 v 1, defender vs attacker.

I can see that, and they will be far better, but that doesn't disprove the scenario.

Ok, let's test your scenario.

Forget about the 4th Division. Write to Sheffield FC. If you could get 8 in 26 games in the 4th division, you would be banging them in in the Northern Premier League. Ask them if you can play up front in their next game. Offer to pay them £50 for the privilege (I will gladly repay you that money when you get a game). Obviously, when the goals start flowing in the NPL, scouts from up the pyramid will come looking and it won't be long before all the 4th Division managers realise they have been wasting their money and everyone on here will be getting 8 goals in the 4th Division.

If you think Sheffield is too high a level, try someone at the 14th level of the pyramid - Kiveton Park will probably give you a game - and work your way up from there.

Don't get me wrong, I think that you're a complete idiot and waste of space, as I think all attention seeking trolls are. The only interest I get out of reading your childish trash is to try and profile you.
My guess is;
17-21
Left school with 2 GCSE's
Single
Working, low level jobs. Generally leave after about 6 months, as you know better than your boss.
Live at home, parents divorced.
Desperately want to be liked, but it never quite happens for you.

That really made me laugh CB.

Two GCSE's :)

How is that deluded? Twenty-six starts to get eight goals. Have you even thought about it?

Wayne Rooney one of the most talented strikers in the English game, mature phyiscally way beyond his years first season 37 games 8 goals, second season 40 games 9 goals. And before you say ah well that was the Premier league, I am pointing out that for an 18 year old such as DCL 8 goals in 28 games is an excellent result.

DCL is a great prospect, tall, quick, athletic and when you say 'well I could have scored that' and go on to say ' and I haven't even played for a club', you really are spouting bollocks of the highest order. :)

That isn't the scenario though. Nor is that realistic to be able to get into the position to test the actual scenario. Now it's you being the silly one. The point was about an average/above average footballer playing in the 4th division. Twenty-six appearances, twenty-six. I'd love to know how many chances the average 4th division forward gets per game, combine that with the minutes DCL has had and work from there to gage some sort of probability that eight convertible chances, calibrated to the standard of the player, will come about before the allotted time.

For the millionth time, you reckon you or any average footballer could do as well as DCL did in the 4th Division. I don't know about you, but I would love to have played league football, but I never thought I was good enough. You apparently think you are good enough. Unless you make an effort to actually get a game for a league team, I will have to conclude you are quite well aware you are talking bollocks but for some strange reason won't admit it.

Trust me, it isn't realistic for me to expect to get a game at league level. I know that. But that has nothing to do with the point or the scenario. I can't understand how you can't see that. Honestly, take your time to read the former part of this post closely, they are two separate entities.

Post 38. Barney States he reckons HE could do better in 26 starts. None of this average footballer guff he's now on with. If the goalposts moved as much when he was waiting for one of these guaranteed easy chances, he'd never score in a million years.

Not the best start to 2016 for the boy.

Interestingly, most 'good judges' at the time thought he was going to make it at centre half. He was also considered £2M worse than his namesake at the time.

He was always the one for me, he just had extra "something", most exciting youngster I had seen in years

Thanks for the compliment Sean. "Boy", hmm...I'll take it!

Are you saying:

1. The evidence is that DCL is no better than the average forward in the 4th Division? If so, I can agree with you; or
2. The evidence is that DCL is no better than you or any other average bloke in a pub team. If so, that is clearly bollocks.

You originally said 2, but now seem to be saying 1. Which is it?

I saw his debut at Orient in Jan 09 and up against lower league forwards, to be honest, he didn't stand out. I recall Orient doing well in the first half and were 1-0 up at HT (we won 4-1 eventually). He didn't then get a game until the end of the season when Naysmith was injured.

It's neither, although I believe 1 to be true. An above average player is what I said, and then it wasn't in the context of "The evidence is that DCL is no better than...".

I'm fine agreeing to disagree, we clearly aren't getting anywhere.

There are apparently 8.2 million adults who play football in the England

http://www.thefa.com/news/my-football/2015/jan/football-participation-on-rise

Assuming an average squad size of 25 per club that gives around 2300 players playing for the 92 FL and PL clubs - i.e. 0.03% of all those who play football. Those who play in the 4th Division may not be at the very top, but make no bones about it, that are in the elite of players in England.

So, in order to even get a kick in the 4th Divisiion, you would need to be better than 99.97% of everyone playing football in England.

That's you is it?

Excellent post Darren. I simply love it when facts and statistics prove beyond any reasonable doubt that someone (Barney) is talking complete nonsense. If I were being uncharitable I would say delusional nonsense. There is a radio 5 sports quiz programme a section of which is 'defend the indefensible'.

As I see it, Barney makes one of his many ill thought out, rash club/player knocking statements. It is proved beyond doubt to be nonsense but rather than accept he is wrong, he will continue to defend his ever more entrenched position to the most ludicrous of levels. No offence Barney but you are continuing to become a caricature of yourself and becoming more ridiculous with every post you make. :)

Oh, I'm having fun.

An "above average" player would be the top 49% of players. - about 4 million players in England. Are you saying there are 4 million players who could play as well in the 4th Division as DCL?

I can see that, and they will be far better, but that doesn't disprove the scenario.

So, the top scorer for Northampton is Marc Richards, on 12 goals, joint third top scorer in League 2. Young DCL is on the bench for most of the games, but can score 8, in all competitions, 5 in the League, and Northampton didn't want him to come back to SUFC, but wanted him to extend the loan. Even by your wind-up standards, this is pretty weak.

Why are you twisting the original scenario in almost every post? I don't know why you're doing that.

For me it was his build and pace, like a middleweight boxer, tough, not getting knocked off the ball. The run he made, from goal line all the way to the Kop, at BDTBL, and then the superb cross to Halford in the play offs, who then headed in, was fantastic.

Don't disagree and his play in those last few games was a revelation. I was just saying that at Orient, I didn't think he looked that good against 3rd Division players and evidentally, Blackwell felt the same as he was dropped for the next league game.

First the wording, of which changed the entire meaning of what was being said.

Second, you added a figure of 4 million. I know I mentioned 'above average', and you've plucked 4 million from the figures, but the scenario wasn't suggesting all 4 million of them had to be better than DCL, which is how your post presumed the case.

"Average" means someone bang in the middle. "above average" means everyone above that middle - 4 million people in this case.

Look, can't we agree that anyone who is paid for playing football must be better than you and I and 99.9% of everyone in this country who plays football? That's bleedin obvious isn't it?

True, maybe he needed a few games to get his confidence up,

You are very frustrating, in the nicest possible way.

It is bleedin obvious, yes, I wholeheartedly agree, as I said before.

But can we also agree that this doesn't disprove the original scenario?

The original scenario that you could score 8 goals in 26 games in the 4th Division? Of course it disproves that; the opposition players would be so much better than you that you wouldn't get a sniff.

Jamie Vardy was still a reserve at stocksbridge park steels at 18. Didn't even make a first team appearance until he was 20. Is he shit as well then? above or below average do we reckon?

How do you know where on the scale of ability someone falling under the 'above average' category is? Therefore, how can you say for definite, that that person wouldn't achieve 8 in 26? Time for me to do some context mixing, so are you saying all 4 million in that category wouldn't be able to match DCL's record? If so, I think that is clean cut bollocks.
