Taken from Northampton OS:

Midfielder Ryan Watson and striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin have left Northampton Town and returned to Leicester City and Sheffield United respectively at the conclusion of their loan spells.

Watson signed on at Sixfields in August until the January transfer window, but has returned to the Foxes at the end of that period. Calvert-Lewin also signed on in August, and scored seven goals for Northampton Town during his loan spell.

"Both players have gone back,” confirmed boss Chris Wilder.

“It’s been a bit of a struggle for Ryan but I don’t want to dwell on it too much and we thank him for his efforts.

“He’s possibly found it difficult to reproduce the form of his first spell and he’s also found it hard to force his way into the team with the form of John-Joe O'Toole, Joel Byrom and Jason Taylor.

“Dominic has done great for us and I’m hoping that he has really enjoyed his time here and that he’s benefited from the experience.

“I’m sure he goes back to Sheffield United a better player but we move on. We are looking to improve the group and we are confident that we can do that."

So, Are we selling him or going to give him a chance?

Suggest we look at him from the bench in January but probably he'll go back on loan elsewhere shortly.

Before DCL went to Npton, Adkins couldn't praise the lad enough. I suspect he'll have a good look at him for introduction to the first team soon because we are short of options up front and he is something different and has that touch of class at times.

He's our most exciting prospect, in my opinion, I'd love to see him given a chance in the first team. His goal to minutes ratio is fantastic for a player his age. Perhaps a place on the bench at Old Trafford?

Cup-tied, he got the winner in that bizarre game when they came back from 2 down at home late on to a non league team.

Would be a good idea if he wasn't cup-tied.

Be nice to see him get the odd chance up front with Sharp. He's a big lad and hopefully he'll fill out a bit over the next year or two as he seems a bit too think at the moment, but I've not seen anything like enough of him to know what type of player he is.

He's got a decent record at Northampton with 8 goals in 26 appearances, the majority of them being from the bench. We are short of options up front so would be nice to see him given a go.

18 year old great prospect Adkins is probably going to have a look at him to see if he,s made enough progress to stay with 1st team squad
.He may think he,s not ready and send him out on loan again,as it will be a youth loan we can bring him back at certain times during loan period so that would be good. He,s still only lightweight but at 6ft 2ins will fill out and be quite physically strong in a year or 2.Adkins will not rush him if he,s not ready that would be counter productive. We also have some more young forwards coming through but blooding them is down to the coaching team and maybe they are not ready for the hurly burly of 1st team football.

Wilder and Knill's comments as recent as last week suggested they were trying to extend it, so I'm guessing we're the ones to stop it happening. Either means:

– Adkins wants him to be involved in the squad, or
– we want him on loan where he's more likely to start most games

I'm sure someone from the Northampton end said that the reason is financial

Whether we are now making Northampton pay all his salary (which surely can't be a lot) I don't know

Get him on the bench here...be great for the lad and the team I reckon.
UTB!

Bizarre decision to bring him back when (i) Northampton wanted to extend the loan, (ii) he's progressing nicely there, & (iii) we're meant to be on some extensive squad trimming programme.

Just hope it's a case of having another loan lined up to a side where he'd be a starter week-in week-out. If not, it's baffling.

I'm being a bit pedantic but who says he will fill out in another year or two? Che was built like an ox at his age.

DCL could just as well have Porter's build...

Someone at Exeter said they once couldn't get a loan player in because they coukdnt afford to fund his accommodation even though his wages were paid.

Could be finances for them

If dcl gets a chance then what about dieago, does that spell the end to the non event that is him? ....

Can see Diego getting released this January...

Or is he still injured....???

I just think that along with cuvellier and Wallace we really are wasting three parking spaces...

Don't know the circumstances but I feel it would have been better all round for Dom to stay at North'ton where he appeared to be popular and being well looked after by a respected lower league manager. I still have my doubts as to whether he is ready for us yet, hope another loan can be sorted.

DCL has an athletic build so he won't be as stocky as Che but will definitely fill out and become in my opinion a physically robust player

Probably see him getting a few minutes in the league, 5 games in 19 days could be a good spot to use some rotation, then get loaned out again

I'd rather he went to a club where he'll start more games. If he's not starting at Northampton he's unlikely to play for us.
Their strikers seem to be on fire so it's been difficult for him to get a starting place but I agree he'd be better off playing regularly now.

I wouldn't say DCL is much of a prospect really.

If he was he'd have shown a bit of something by now.

He's among a few disappointing academy players of recent.
