David McGoldrick

Did no one watch him the last two seasons?

He can't play as a striker because his shooting is terrible and he doesn't have the pace or fitness to play as an attacking midfielder in a team which demands he track back.

I'm not sure what people are complaining about?

He will do a job elsewhere but not how we play.
Two seasons ago he was our top scorer by a mile?

Must say I am shocked how well liked McGoldrick is on here. Always thought he was a reasonable player at Championship level but nowhere near clinical enough.

Yes a good player when fit although technically a free signing you are looking at probably in the region of £500,000 wages plus add ons for the year. If he makes 21 appearances like he did for us last year that's nearly £24k a game. With the freeing up of wages of those off loaded we can easily be looking at the loan market for picking up what we need too. Although alot on here have criticised that strategy in the past, I personally believe its ideal for us in our current transition for a Premiership U23s/first teamer bench player coming on loan

Cant be arsed to read (any ?) histrionics but …
Ref- Burke, Rodwell, Morrison, punts that didn’t work or even Duffy, Coutts, Leon - punts that worked but time has been & gone 🤔

It’s about a 50/50 chance he’ll be out for majority of the season, or do a job at Boro.

Allegiance and love for him aside, it’s just not worth the risk considering wages and our financial situation

Wilder is no fool he knows what Didzy can add to a dressing room. Wilder knows he can't perform for 90 minutes all season he will use him for the last 10 minutes as an impact player with defenders tiring.

I’m not one to get too critical of ex mangers, but it takes a stretch of the imagination to be absolutely certain that somebody that signed Oli McBurnie for £20m is “no fool”.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think McGoldrick works as an impact player. When he tries too hard (like when we’ve been a goal down), he drops deep into the midfield and starts getting in the way. He’s much better when the game is wide open.

Relevance being?
Wilder thought he could getting something out of the first 3 , & Didz (@ that time)
Wilder did get something out of the latter - (nostalgic) moaning / criticism when they were let go - all 3 were proved to be the right decision
So …….Some of Wilders calls / punts were ‘spot on’, Didz being the perfect example, some not so.

Would there be the same (paranoid?) reaction if Didz were going somewhere not managed by a former Blades gaffer (& perceived promotion rival) ?
Outstanding footballer for us but time moves on

I agree it was the right time for him to go, and I don’t really care that he’s gone to Boro.

But I don’t understand your point on the punts. Every manager takes them if they need to?

I must say I am shocked by how ignorant a professor of football such as yourself is about the goings on for the past four seasons at your second favourite club. "Second favourite club" because for the life of me I can't think why you spend so much time on here.

It's a Wendy fan dressed as Forest.

I guess that was /is my (clumsy) ‘point’-
IF Didz does owt @ Boro (score agin us !?!) - I anticipate apoplexy, a plethora of ‘told you so + Wilder is a genius (H, L & McC kna nowt) calls
As you say every manager takes a punt (informed decision ?) sometimes , indeed with every transfer. Both parties are so doing with Didz - Boro in my opinion less so than us (lower salary, play as you play?) , a ‘risk I’m comfortable with even when a solitary ‘achievement’ can become ‘proof’ of managerial genius / ineptitude particularly with the benefit of (20:20) hindsight

It's hard to see him leave and I'm sure he's capable of doing a job as well as being a great presence in the dressing room, but it's absolutely the right time.

It's not simply a case of keep or get rid. His contract had expired. At this stage of his career, aged 34 and on the way back from a serious injury, he wants security and as long a contract as he can find.

I think it's likely we will have discussed a 1 year extension on a reduced salary, or a pay-as-you-play type deal, but that's not what he's looking for.

We would've been mad to offer a 2 year deal. However there's a manager well known to McGoldrick who isn't shy of giving long contracts to players approaching the end of their career...

We went round to friends today who we havent seen a while and my mate is a Boro fan (his missus a Birmingham fan) and I told him about the rumour Wilder wants Didzy and he hadnt heard anything about it. I said he is a free agent and he said probably Boro cant even afford "free". He then went to tell me about the Boro team and they sound in as bad a position as us, no money, they only have one decent striker and they cant wait to get rid of Spence to Tottenham. They basically dont rate him at all as he would play 10 games have 2 decent ones and 8 where he looked like he couldnt be bothered so fans cant stand him. He reckoned he did well at Forest because he doesnt want to play for Boro but he has never played well for them. He reckons Boro are going to struggle next year and reckons we will go up. I took great glee in saying my son and I were at the Boro match where we beat them in one of our best games of the season.

Not saying your Boro mate knows nowt but:-

Realise it’s the equivalent to the Stir but the local Smoggy rag ( (along with absolute a dozen other ‘sources’ [sic) are giving credence to the Didz suggestion

& they (will) apparently have brass available:-

- possibly / probably from flogging Spence ?

I had it in my head that it was a done deal and official that he'd signed for Boro? But now he's linked with Derby 😕

He'd be a great signing for Blades Veterans FC

That's a better move for him unless it's just about money, would get regular starts and closer to home. He's got little to no use as a sub which is probably how Boro would use him

I agree somewhat but he's now at that stage in his career (and he's generally been injury prone for the majority of his career) where he's going to be used as a sub anyway. Even dropping down a league if he does sign for Derby, you can't realistically see him being available for a whole season anyway.

If Derby try to play him as much as possible it will come back to bite and he'll end up being on the sidelines for a while.

Agreed.

Derby would be ideal for him.
