Few decent pints in Ye Olde White Hart & Sailmakers tonight. Parkers near the ground no real ale but did a job as per. Hull fans we spoke to didn’t fancy their chances and rightly so.

Maintaining my 100% record there tonight. Getting mauled by United.

There's the Black Boy Inn in Retford too. Does a decent pint.
There used to be one in Tottenham, but it closed amidst some furure about the name.

There's a pub called the Black Prince in London. Also the Thin White Duke in Soho.

Is there really a pub called the Black Bhoy in Hull in 2024. I thought that sort of racist nonsense had died out in the 80s
I know!
How much longer to we have to put up with names like Blackpool and Blackburn!
And as for The Black Watch Battalion Scottish, well what can I say!
I'm so offended. I need to find my safe space to go and cry in.

(Just in case of doubt, this is called sarcasm)

The black bhoy pub in hull offends nobody , white or black it's part of hulls history , a city that abolished slavery .
As above should we change Blackpool or Blackburn incase it offends ????
Maybe whitepool or Whiteburn ?
Take away history you take away education .

I think Pool of Colour and Burn of Colour would be more appropriate.

Mebbes.......

Friday 13 March, 1970, beat Carlisle at home 1-0 with a Woodward free-kick. We never drop points or let goals in on Friday 13th. Fact🤣
I missed the match as I was recovering from the Hong Kong flu. I hadnt realised we were playing that night but my dad didnt tell me because I would have insisted on going. When he came back he drew a diagram on his cigarette packet of how the goal was scored

Why was it played on a Friday, it must have been rare in those days?

I know we used to chant "shity hull" to them but it's actually not a bad place with a rich history . Still has its issues but the place has changed alot since the 80's .
Not a holiday destination but a decent afternoon out .
It's not a bad night out either, me and the Mrs been going for a night every year for the last 6 years, going again at the end of October.

There used to be a pub called the Blackamoor Head in Selby back in the day, don’t know if it’s still there

Racist ? Really ? It’s an old naval saying referring to channels, learn from history instead of spouting rubbish like that.
Wouldn’t that be ‘black buoy’?

I think the pub in Hull is ‘Ye Olde Black Boy’ which is possibly named from King Charles II (wiki helped me here). I’m prepared to be put right though.

If it was ‘Black Bhoy’ that would (probably) have a different meaning, usually linked to Irish heritage.

Using the word ‘black’ is usually not a problem when describing things, but that does not mean it cannot be used in a way that we should sometimes question as ideas and society changes:

https://practicalesg.com/2021/09/say-this-instead-blacklist-blackball-blackmail-black-market-etc/

I see the argument being made about, for example, the word ‘blacklist’ here. This is not the same as the myths such as ‘you can’t say Blackpool, or blackboard or black coffee anymore’.

Good night out is Hull 👍

You are correct with the title, I didn’t really know 100% as it was a pick up on racism, which I dislike but people are far too touchy about things and wish for everything to be abolished. Learn from history ! It was named after a Moroccan lad who worked there a long, long time ago so he would have been unique I suppose.

I lived in Hull for a couple of years.. Mixed emotions about the place tbh. Had some great nights in the Adelphi, Welly, Spiders and the Haworth Arms... Its a tough city though and got into my fair share of scrapes. 👍

Cheers, that’s interesting, possibly links to Hull’s seaport history.

We can all learn from history, and I agree it seems some can be over sensitive to perceived racism over a pub name.

I wouldn’t go as far as saying people want to abolish everything though, a lot of questioning language is both well meaning and often well argued. I reckon it is better to talk it through rather than simply demonising whoever you disagree with.

Absolutely,a lot of people are totally ignorant towards it all including some of my mates unfortunately. I went to Zanzibar a few years ago to learn much more about the trade,an eye opener even for me. Loved it but harrowing.

I live in Hull now, and I can confirm they’re the real cesspits..

I’d change Ladybower Reservoir to ‘Non-binary bower’ as well if I were Prime Minister. Mansfield to ‘Themsfield’.

Was out in hull allday yesterday and night and same today and tomorrow.
Did the Paul heaton tour visiting his old house and local pub where the housemartins drank as Paul lived on grafton Street near the grafton pub. Also the adelphi club which was rammed and where housemartins, beautiful south , oasis, stone roses Paul weller and many more started. £5 to get in but worth it as plenty real ales on and cracking music
Rough old area is the Newlands suburb .
Below.
Black boy pub
Brewdog pub
Hull cheese pub
Admiral
Minerva
Lion and key
Grafton
Adelphi
The minerva is my favourite pub in hull

Stayed in the grafton for couple hours and the locals all know Paul heaton well .
I met Paul's best mate in their , Paul was best man at his wedding . He's been an extra on eastenders , several times plus the bill and more. The locals even though rough and very decent people and plenty of free drinks came my way.
Not mentioning his name but initials R.B
Got shown where Paul heaton and Stan lived on grafton Street.
The pub is a shrine to Paul's music career
