Coutts replacement... Brooks.

Why are you enhancing the point, people already know he will be a big miss.

Because I think ahead Wiz. I care deeply about this team. We have a golden opportunity. It won’t be achieved by daft suggestions (they’ll come) that bringing back Whiteman, or even more risibly, Reed, will begin to fill the gap.

Whiteman is a very good prospect but we certainly need to strengthen that area in January.

No they are not. And although CW and AK will be frustrated and disappointed at the loss they certainly will not be panicking.
Totally agree, I wouldn't be surprised if they went to have a little look at 'The Whiteboard' before they go home tonight, things will change but we won't suddenly become crap.

Lets face it, we were top 2 challengers this has knocked us down to top 6 at best, coutts is our best player by far and I'm gutted tonight, for him the club and the fans, Lundatram isn't the answer, I'd stick it Samir.

it's carruthers OR we change how we play.

It's not Brooks - we saw exactly what Brooks is about when he put one past the post - that is where he is best.

If it's Lundstram then we cannot play the same way - it's impossible. Lundstram cannot in any way shape or form play as replacement for Coutts.

It's up to CW & AK to work something out - what is clear is that we have 2 HOME games against weak(ish) opposition to learn/practice what we do.

We have a great chance to gatecrash the Premiership. However good a prospect he is or isn’t (we’ll leave that for another time) he isn’t, at the moment, anywhere near the quality of Paul Coutts. We need someone who is. We’re not going to risk a promotion season and all the riches flowing from it for the sake of giving a promising kid a run are we?

Panic? No, we’ve got Tufty and One Knill. Gutted for Couttsy and our club, yes.

However, another great win tonight and more goals for the magnificent duo who can’t play together...

Well done the fabulous Blades, yet again, proud of you.

Back to the Trivento Gran Reserva.

Think youve gotta play carruthers with fleck , lundstram doesnt make the game flow like coutts does hes not as good as a footballer fleck, caruthers n duffy

Call me crazy but duffy is the only player in our squad as comfortable on the ball as coutts is. Coutts confort on in and ability to retain possession with ease could only be "replicated" by duffy

Is it time top play a 3 of basham , fleck and duffy with duffy deeper and bash doing his tackling and have brooks linking to a striker

My 2 pence.

It’s a no from me. In the same way that nobody can do Coutts’s role as well as Coutts, the same is true of Duffy – weakening us in two areas is a worse situation in my view. I can see it being either Lundstram, or more likely once a right wingback returns to fitness it’ll be Basham. Wilder always wants to find a place for him in the side, and we have a number of players jostling at the back for a start – moving Basham doesn’t significantly weaken us at the back, as we’ve strength in depth there, and while not replicating Coutts’s role would give us an adequate option there till Jan.

If Wilder feels we need a replacement then the board need to give him whatever he wants. If a Coutts replacement will cost £10million so be it. We are in too good a portion to crowbar unsuitable players into the team. £10 million is a drop in the ocean if we do go up. Should we not go up this season we may not have the "surprise status" next. If Tufty thinks Lundstram can do the job then we should trust him if he doesn't lets see this game changing investment.
£10m on who though? That's an insane amount of money for anyone in our situation - How do you justify that to the rsmest of the squad????

Us Blades can be miserable at times but this is going too far even for us! The lads looked a bit shaken at the start of the second half but showed a huge amount of guts to get a cracking result. Top on merit, two winnable home games to come. Losing Coutts is a massive blow but we’ll come through it. In Wilder we trust.

No way is Brooks a replacement/substitute for Couttsey. It has to be Lundstram. When he first arrived he looked like a rabbit in the head lights but don't forget he had come from a mediocre L1 team but was clearly highly regarded as a youngster coming through the Everton academy. I just think back to the first few games of the season against Brentford, Middlesbrough and Cardiff in particular. I felt our midfield including Coutts looked rushed, a bit overpowered and slightly out of their depth however as each game passed they got stronger, better and seemed to raise their game to Championship level and now look not just Championship but top of Championship and heading towards Premiership level and who is to say they will not be able to step up another level if we got promoted? Since arriving Lundstram has not played a lot but each time he has come on the pitch I feel he has looked fitter, faster and better than the first time I saw him. Based on CW's track record of recruiting players and getting the best out of players who is to say that Lundstram will not make the step up that all the other players have made given the chance to play every week? He is young and can learn quickly. It is hard to imagine he will ever be quite as good as Coutts but he may well be able to fill his role. Let's hope so.

He has to perform between now and JTW. If we can get there still hanging on to a top two or even a top six place then we can recruit if he hasn't made it. Hopefully the board will back CW.

I'm gutted for Coutts, the club and the other players (and us as fans) but let's hope it can provide even more motivation for them to go on and win promotion.

Thanks for that. Precisely the right balance to strike and you’ve improved my mood a little. Make no mistake that was a great win tonight but what a blow we’ve suffered. Thank Pele we’ve got Tufty, Knill, Mitchell and Prestridge. If any group of men can sort it out and keep us motoring...

Don’t know whether I’m drinking to celebrate or drown sorrows. I’ll have to open another bottle whilst I consider the matter...

Absolutely right. All of it.

Has to be fleck into the coutts role for me. Then carruthers/Duffy in the Fleck role. Could wilder be tempted to bring Whiteman back from Donny?

For what purpose? We’re after promotion. You really don’t get professional football, do you?

Bladey Boyband Claptrap.

Kasami, Clayton and Macdonald are the players that initially spring to mind. Or that ginger lad at Brentford whose name escapes me? Why should Wilder have to justify spending that to the players? Players in our squad are worth that sort of money now (Fleck, Brooks and O'Connell) Wilder took a risk on signing them as League 1 players and its paid off big time. However we can't be risking signing league one players ( we have two on the bench now) when we are pushing for the premier league. We may need to spend however much is necessary to get a quality Championship midfielder which is probably £7 million plus. That being said Lundstram may do a fine job. I'm purely stating what I believe should happen if the midfield replacements we have currently are not up to the job. UTB

Said it ages ago, there's no one who can replace Coutts (or Fleck) in that current squad. That's why we need to strengthen. I'm sure we will. In the meantime...Lundstram for Coutts? I can understand why he's the first choice stand-in, but I'm sorry, the lad isn't in the same class. After Coutts went off tonight and Lundstram came on we looked a different team. Lost composure, couldn't hold on to the ball anywhere near as well. Not knocking Jonny, but I don't see him being quite good enough at this level tbh. He's o.k. as a squad player.

A small plus tonight - in the short time he had on the pitch, Carruthers looked very sharp. I can see him forcing his way back in - but he's not a replacement for Coutts either.

I don't want Brooks playing that deep. I don't think we'd see the best of him and defensively I think he'd be a liability.

Presumably we bought Lundstram for this reason - to back up Coutts. He's got to step up now.

Pace? Trying to replace Coutts' pace?

Lundstram will play slightly deeper than Coutts and give Fleck more licence to push on. He is a leader and a tackler and can play the long ball very well. Just watch him when he settles in, he'll be playing with authority by Xmas.

Betcha he waint.

Playing Brooks there would be idiotic.

We have 2 choices. Lundstram in a straight swap or Basham and push Fleck up. Either, or.

The lack of Leonard or another midfield signing will likely punish us. As it stands, we only have caruthers on the bench and his defensive abilities are questionable.

Yes, pace. Coutts is one of the quickest players in the team over ten to twenty yards. He has a change of pace and thinks quicker than all but very few players.

I appreciate the sentiment and purpose of the post Pinchy, but don't over egg it. Speed of thought buys him between 2 and 5 yards instantly over his opponent. Once he has made that they have to catch up, but he aint physically quick.

Some crazy posts on here tonight for replacing Coutts with Basham & Brook's. Ffs calm down. Nether of them can do his job.

There is not a chance in a million years that we will be spending anywhere near that in January. Divide by 5, maybe.

Lundstram is Coutts' replacement , its why he was signed in the first place and has Wilders DNA all over it .

Is he better than Coutts ? No , he isn't . Can he offer some of what Coutts delivers week in week out ? Yes , i think he can . And lets face facts here , Wilder believes he can too and thats exactly the reason he signed him .

I'm as gutted as everyone else is about Coutts' injury but I have a feeling that now Lundstrams going to get a decent run in the side we will see the reason Wilder signed him .

The only money we've spent was on an old CB from Wolves who's hardly played.
And he didn't look that great when he did.
We can't stay top without a replacement for Coutts of the same quality.
We haven't got one at the Club.
So we have to get one.
Simples.
Now then , I don't care if that means spending money on a signing or CW getting a Premiership MF on loan.
What CW won't do is fanny abart trying to kid us with an interior replacement.
Don't forget we were getting a MF in January anyway.
We can get a better one now that they're more likely to gets starting place in a promotion team.
Clouds have silver linings , if the board back us with some wages , or even a fee.
Everyone in Sheffield knows this season is our best chance with the position we now occupy.
