Coutts replacement... Brooks.

I appreciate the sentiment and purpose of the post Pinchy, but don't over egg it. Speed of thought buys him between 2 and 5 yards instantly over his opponent. Once he has made that they have to catch up, but he aint physically quick.

He’s not a one paced plodder. That’s the point.

There’s nothing positive about losing one of your best players for a period.

It does however make our JTW much clearer now.

With Fleck and Coutts such a fixture, attracting a player of similar ilk to strengthen midfield would be a real issue.

Lundstram would have expected to play the role he has done.

When we approach far better players in January, they will know they have a chance to start. When Coutts hopefully comes back well, you hope it will be to a team that’s even stronger.

This will be the first test for the Board. They can offset this against Brooks’ rapid emergence which has saved us a signing or two.

To the immediate Wilder has a choice to make. I’d pick Basham. Deteriorating pitches will favour a combative option and with O’Connell, Wright and CCV you have genuine first picks in defence. You still have Stearman as a very capable alternative.

I think though Wilder will first go to Lundstram and so he should. Nothing smacks of telling a player he’s only a back up than moving Basham over. You also don’t want to react to one injury by forcing another injured player back too soon i.e. Baldock or Freeman.

When they are back, it’s about competition for places which we still have and which shows what an astute job Chris, Alan and their staff have done in building the squad.

The crowd will turn on Lundstram very quickly if he doesn’t improve. There’s an awful lot of pressure on him now to perform and I honestly don’t think he will come up with the goods, but we have to hope so. We can’t sign anyone with the quality of Coutts so we’ll just have to make do. Maybe lower our expectations for the season

No they are not. And although CW and AK will be frustrated and disappointed at the loss they certainly will not be panicking.
never realised you were an insider..
as you are probably aware.. i meant everyone on here.. fans etc.. i'm panicking .. i'm not ashamed to admit it

It'll be Lundstram for now. He didn't have a great game after coming on. I think the pressue on him is huge, as everybody will be worrying how the loss of Coutts will affect us and people will be comparing everything Lundstram does to Coutts' exceptional high standards over the past couple of seasons.

We will have to hope that the team collectively will compensate for the loss of Coutts, not just hoping Lundstram will replace him 100%.

In January we will have to add some cover. If we can't find the perfect player, maybe we can find one more option and maybe consider recalling Ben Whiteman as well. Carruthers and Brooks are not the right player types for Coutts' position IMO.
Its very easy to criticise a player when he comes off the bench or plays a few cameo's in a very settled midfield. However, i thought for the 20-30 mins of the second half, Lundstram was too right sided, almost shadowing Fleck or getting in his way. But it wasn't just Lundstram, Fleck wasn't finding the space when Lundstram was on the ball. Lundstram was also rushing things as well. However, later in the game he settled a lot more and him, Fleck and Carruthers seemed to then look better as we broke a couple of times.

So give Lundstram and possibly Carruthers a chance to settle into the midfield and not necessarily slot into the Coutts role, but they all need to find each others capabilities so that they can compliment each other.

Great chance for Lundstram now and he seems to be a big part of this squad. Carruthers will also get his chances

For what purpose? We’re after promotion. You really don’t get professional football, do you?

Bladey Boyband Claptrap.
perhaps Monty could do a job? ;)

(seeing as there are some touchy types on here i'll qualify that. i was being sarcastic)

Two points,

1. it is not Coutts replacement its his stand in until he's fit next year.

2. Who will stand in as vice captain? Fleck?

Maybe we just get behind Lundstram hey? Doesn't stand a chance with comments like this.

Bang on shef. Go back 2 years I (like many on here) offered to drive Coutts anywhere he wanted transferring to.

I complained when we bought journeyman Clarke, and gasped when Sharp was made captain etc.

The sum is greater than the parts, if Tuffty has chosen Ludstrum he has faith he can make him a cog in our machine. What has amazed everyone including Blades fans is we have no mega stars, no pre madonnas. We epitomise team and that includes the fans so get behind Ludstrum he's got a big job on his hands, the team will support him and so should we just like we did with Coutts when he came good.

Think you're spot on swiss. My concern about Lundstrom is that I don't think he's truly good enough to be able to cope with the pressure and expectation. As you say, he didn't have a great game after coming on last night but I'd expand that to not having a good game for us since he arrived at bdtbl. He has his chance now with a run in the side and i really hope he shoved my concerns back down my throat. But there is no doubt that this is a key moment in our season which could go either way and will show what we really are made of.

Sorry......Bergen. It's still early ;)

I have reservations about Lundstram but that's only because Coutts has been so good. Coutts looks like he has an extra second on the ball, Lundstram doesn't. But I'm pretty sure that Wilder will be picking Lundstram as his replacement so let's get behind him. Lundstram is very good with both feet, which Coutts isn't. He's got a shit ton of potential and he's coming into a confident team.

No everyone on here is not panicking. As CW says "These things happen in football it is how you deal with them that is important". He was frustrated with the nature of how it happened and upset for Paul Coutts.
If you're still panicking? I'll be round shortly to shake you by the shoulders and give you hard slaps to your face;).

Stearman in and the back.....either wright ccv or o'connell in there if lundstram cant cut it....or when Freeman or baldock are back stick bash in there. If we are still top 2 in the transfer window the board release 5-10 mill to see us home....coutts then sits at the front of the open top bus ......job done

It would've been better losing Sharp than Coutts. Easier to replace.

I'm worried about this injury due to his previous problems with his knees.

Lundstram is someone that annoys me as he makes himself look worse than he is. One of his first touches was a 60 yard cross field psss tin Basham. (To be fair Coutts had been trying it all night and Warnock kept reading them). He then does a few passes and then gives the ball away in poor areas so cheaply.

Lundtsram when he starts at Forrest and QPR he looked good!

We are Sheffield United and we don’t have millions to carry loads of top end championship players.

Lundstram will be playing minimum until January! So let’s get behind him and be positive towards him as much as possible when he plays.

thanks boo
i'm not panicking now i needed to go to sleep :)
.. i'm sure CW and AK have a back up plan.. they have had one for everything so far

It's got to be some combination of Lundstram and Carruthers until January then you reassess. Agree with whoever said it would be horses for courses, got to trust Wilder and Knill to tweak things as needed.

It's not Brooks though. While I wouldn't necessarily agree he couldn't do the Coutts role, it'd be a waste of one of our best resources to play him that deep

I'm worried about this injury due to his previous problems with his knees.

On the plus side, it isn’t his knees – if this was a knee ligament injury I’d probably be more concerned. Assuming it’s a clean break without complications, he should once healed be able to work his way back to fitness. Ligament injuries, susceptible to relapse, are trickier I believe re: recovery.

The ambulance arrived just as he was leaving the pitch, hopefully it was a clean break so will heal quicker. Poor lad looked devastated, just aswell we have strength and depth in the squad. Appalling luck with injuries this season and we are still top. That speaks volumes about this squad and management. UTB

Chrissio! His second name is Basham.
Chrissio! He’s in instead of Lundstram!
Chrissio! At times he’ll give the ball awaaaaaaaaay!

Just watched the highlights and the one Lundtrum clip he effortlessly gives the ball away leading to Burton having a shot, he really really needs to up his game if we want to carry on like we are

Didn’t Coutts, master of never giving the ball away, do precisely that against Leeds leading to a chance? It will at times happen, and the nature of the area they patrol is that when it’s given away there the likelihood is it will lead to a chance.
