I'm delighted. I like everything I hear about this guy. He was a serious runner for the Everton job if Martinez dropped out. He's captained both Rangers and Everton. As a player he was a dedicated pro who played into his 40s. I get the impression he will think a little deeper than 'Upanatem'.

He is in a different league to the Bladey Bladey Blades on the short list. An outstanding prospect, in my view. I'll even overlook his slight Bladeyness. DW had him here on a non-contract basis, did he not?

Let this one be true.

The hoofwaffe are reserving judgement, until we find out if he prefer proper football with early balls banged up to a target man, and a player feeding off the scraps.

This is, of course, still unconfirmed. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but given the number that have appeared to turn it down I'm going to withhold any optimism till there's any confirmation...

Just goes to show the depths we have sunk to when this is the best we can get, the only reason so many are in favour of him getting the job is ..........
a/ the utter shite we have been linked to
b/ the utter shite that have told us to do one
c/ the long drawn out recruitment process has worn everyone down until they are happy to accept any shite who is not a former United player.

Puckin hell he is Scotch so he must be a good manager in the making, just like SAF ........................ fookin laughable just like the rest of the club and now the disease is spreading to the fans .................. it makes you want to weep.

You make me want to smash my laptop. Your fooking laughable pal. I would say go and get another hobby but you probably wouldn't be bothered to do that either

Other than McCall, Weir is the first realistic candidate Ive gone over a 5 on the excitement scale for! Ive seen him play many times for Rangers and Scotland and he was a leader on the pitch. He was one of the fans favorites for the recent Everton job and I think he could be the one to motivate the rabble at Utd to get back in to the Championship and even higher. Fingers crossed!

First time I've heard anyone suggest the distilled grain makes a good manager!

I think most people are basing their favour for this possible appointment on a bit more than nationality, but like SAF, Moyes, Shankly and a few others he is like them SCOTS.

Would be a great appointment if true! Highly rated by the Everton fans, involved in the youth setup, has worked with some good managers and had a high pedigree playing career.

I can understand a lot of the negative comments on here, yes he is unproven, but we have to take a gamble IMO, the position we are in a proven manager of a high calibre would not touch us with a barge pole.

So we take a gamble or go for one of the 'usual suspects' i know which option i prefer!

Still reckon we'll end up with Morgan tho!

The fact Everton invited him to apply for the job speaks volumes. had Martinez no become available he could be their new manager. I am heading towards cautious optimism over this, I dont want an ex stalwart as a manager as they get too much sympathy, Weir is as good as we could have hoped for, a born leader keen to impress, with good connections,,and an array of friends in high places

Sorry but the "good connections" reason for appointing him his cobblers.
For a start we're supposed to be getting away from the idea of loanees being preferred to our own youngsters.
Secondly, there was nobody with better connections than Robson or Speed and how much good did it do them?
Thirdly, any club can approach any other to borrow players and if the deal is right for both parties it will happen.
For some reason United/fans keep imagining that we have to have some sort of special relationship to borrow players.
Like the laughable ones we supposedly had with Leeds and Spurs.
We're still waiting for their best prospects to descend upon us.

Weir is 43, so he's no spring chicken and should command respect, even from the older players. He could prove to be a top manager (in which case we'll lose him after a couple of years). On the other hand he could fail, but surely this is a gamble well worth taking. Young manager, several young talented players to bring through. Good connections, if we need them. A fresh start. I'm feeling almost optimistic...

He still has a lot of learning to do, so I hope the fans give him a chance.

Of course we shouldn't consider a guy interviewed for the Everton job, we must be mad?

Or you are.

That's why this feels good.

Three years to fail as well if he's seen to be building something.
