David Weir poised for job as Sheffield United boss
Former Scotland captain David Weir is on the brink of becoming the new manager of Sheffield United.
BBC Radio Sheffield understands that a deal is being finalised between the League One club and the 43-year-old.
Weir was recently interviewed for the manager's job at Everton, where he has been a reserve team coach, before they appointed Roberto Martinez.
The Scot had been close to signing for the Blades as a player after leaving Rangers in January 2012.
He trained under then manager Danny Wilson as the defender was keen to extend his playing career.
Instead, he returned to former club Everton to take up a coaching role, although he initially continued to play for the reserves at Goodison.
Now, with fellow Scotsman David Moyes having moved to Manchester United, Weir is poised to make his own first move into management with the Blades.
United, who missed out on promotion after defeat in the play-offs, had been looking for a new manager after Wilson's departure in April .
They failed in attempts to attract Central Coast Mariners coach Graham Arnold, who was subsequently critical of the club , and Motherwell's Stuart McCall to the post .
Port Vale coach Robert Page and former Portsmouth, Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers manager Michael Appleton were also linked with the vacancy.
Falkirk-born Weir, who won 69 caps for Scotland, began his career with his local club before moving to Hearts, Everton then Rangers.
If it's true, it's a DAM good appointment.
Will play fairly direct football.
Every silver lining has a cloud, huh?The only problem we have now is, if he does well and another club come in for him....

Flask?Ladybower?

Don't be a pillock Bartman, it is fairly common knowledge the players mentioned are on more than £2.5k pw and you know that very well as does anyone who takes the slightest interest in Sheffield Utd.
He was here on a non contract basis for 5 mins or so under Wilson.I would be happy with Weir as the young, up and coming manager. Experienced player and has worked with Moyes, who really changed "small" Everton to be a solid club in the Premiership. And the big plus, he has no connection to the club nor the pigs!!!
Good things come to those who wait /quote]
It seems to be taking a long time, but I suppose these days you have to have two sets of lawyers going over the contract.
Unlike the "good old days":
Chairman: "Na then. Does tha' want t'job?"
Applicant: "Aye".
(handshake)
Job done.
Well that would be an unexpected novelty. I can only think of three (arguably four) occasions since 1990 that our managers have been approached for other jobs:
- Kendall by Everton in 1997
- Possibly Bruce by Huddersfield in 1999, though as I recall we lost the appeal on him being tapped up
- Warnock by Pompey in 2005
- Speed by Wales in 2010
Of those, I think the only one I would have been disappointed in their departure would have been NW. Kendall & Bruce had ultimately disappointed, and Speed hadn't had the best of starts. I can't remember the last manager that left because they were genuinely doing really well in their job here.
You could argue that Nigel Spackman also "left United to better" himself. It's conceivable that being unemployed is preferable to managing SUFC.So only Mercer, Kendall and Speed (and possibly Bruce) left United to better themselves...
Darren at the risk of raking over old coals - Warnock wasn't sacked: his contract wasn't renewed and reports at the time said that he'd resigned.

Sky are carrying the story now they are usually reliable.

Exactly a lot seem to believe we sacked Neil when we got relegated. That was never the case and he was harping on about a new contract for most of the season in the PL. He gets offered one and turns it down.
His choice not ours.
