Brooks For Wales

I think this answers the Q;

Article 5. Principle
Second Paragraph
With the exception of the conditions specified in article 8 below, any Player who has already participated in a match (either in full or in part) in an Official Competition of any category or any type of football for one Association may not play an international match for a representative team of another Association. This means that once the player has represented the national team in official competition, they may not change nationalities.

He never participated though did he - either in full or part? I thought you had to come on as a sub or start to receive that full cap and therefore Brooks is still free to choose another nation that he is eligible for - providing he is selected. Or am I wrong?

I’m not the expert by any means, but that’s how I interpret it. Therefore he could still play for England...

Jesus! Can we leave the deluded comments to the idiots on pork talk?

Deluded? It was one of Ramsey’s poorest games for Wales, way lower than his capability, and when he plays like that he’s of no use to most teams. When you needed a calm head on the ball, he lumped it forward. When you wanted a dangerous ball into the box, he floated it harmlessly to nobody. With Allen off the pitch, the team turned to him to dictate the play and found him wanting. Tell me I’m wrong.

If he plays in the friendlies he could still switch allegiances - Diego Costa did it a few years back. He played 2 friendlies for Brazil before switching to Spain.

Big Jostein and Roger Nilsen tended to be our most capped in the mid-90s. I think they and Alan Kelly were in their countries' squads for USA '94, though I think only Flo played any matches.

Yeah I followed that group in USA 94 with interest containing Ireland and Norway (along with Italy and Mexico). Interestingly. All 4 teams finished on the same number of points with the same goal difference if I recall correctly. All won 1, lost 1 and drew 1 and all wins by a 1 goal margin. Tightest group ever?

The thing is, the big clubs Hoover up all the talent. If there's anyone actually decent playing for a smaller PL club, they get bought by a big one. It's not like the old days where you got players as good as anyone in the league playing for a smaller club, like TC with us, or Le Tissier at Saints. If a player is good enough for a top six club, he'll soon end up at one. So if Robson-Kanu was as good as Kane he'd be playing in the champions league. Like Kane is.

The reasons why top players don't reproduce their club form for England is another debate but I don't agree with the idea that the players Southgate picks aren't the best available and that players playing for Stoke or WBA are better, they're not and they'd look even shitter in an England side than the players look now, which I accept is hard to imagine.

I agree with the principle of what you say but think there are always exceptions that do get overlooked because of the club they play for. For example, I think it’s no coincidence that Harry Maguire only got called up after leaving Hull despite his performances last season being clearly good enough to earn a call up. Similarly, Ben Gibson has fallen away since Boro’s relegation because he’s not playing Prem football. But on balance, in the vast majority of cases, the best players find their way to the best clubs and are called up for the national teams.

But then there are those strange players who just click and perform so much better for their country than their club (the anti-England effect). Jostein Flo was a feared opponent for England when he pulled on a Norway shirt but was average at best for us. Maybe if we cast the net wider, we might discover a player who just does the business at international level.

It's a very interesting dilemma - and I am going to test you with an alternative.

It's probably fair to say (with hindsight of course) that DCL and Adams were sacrificed and it led to promotion.

I appreciate it's a difficult call - and lets just speculate a bit - we keep Brooks for 2/3 years and develop him but he runs down his contract or we cash in and lets just assume someone is daft enough to put £20m on the table (in the summer when most big transfers take place) which enables us to have a real go at getting into the Prem next season.

It would be a really tough call - and yes, some would jump on the bandwagon of selling etc - but like everything it's a gamble.

Personally I'd take it - bird in the hand for me.

If we were talking sums like £20mil, then yeah, that might be too much to turn down. But when you say that would allow us to have a real go, we’d still probably be no more than mid-table in terms of spending power. I think we got £6-8 million this summer through the Walker/ Maguire transfers but still didn’t spend over a million on anyone. £20 wouldn’t go that far in terms of high profile transfers. But with CW in charge, who knows?

Even Tufty would struggle with just £20 Dane.

I've just met a guy who works at Liverpool's academy and apparently klopp is going to put a bid in for brooks in the region of £10 million in January!. He said that klopp saw brooks at the sty and was very impressed by his M O Match display. I said that brooks is worth double that price and they're gonna have a fight on their hands to get hold of him!!. All the Liverpool fans are excited at the prospect!!. Surely we won't sell?. In wilder we trust. UTB
