Bramall Lane End Clock

Chris Morgan probably the closest to hitting the clock on top of John Street stand.

He got the ball on the roof and Warnock made him pay for the ball. Although I think he was joking...

Not seen that since.

It is mad to think of it still being there post South Stand being built. This was way before I first went to the Lane. Was there ever any intention to keep it long-term as a historical quirk of the stadium?

Somewhere towards the Bramall Lane end of that picture there was an indoor football pitch. I played a few games in there probably 81 ish. No idea if it was part of the old pavilion or not.

It was right on the corner of BL and Cherry Street and I think it was our player's luxurious gym, in a dilapidated barn like shed. Blades Revival members could train there on a Monday night, doing weights or the odd game of 5-a-side. The 'pitch' was a green plastic mat with bumps, creases and ridges, which always made for an interesting game.

And you try tellin that to the young footballers of today ...
THEY WONT BELIEVE YOU !

I remember “The Gym” well. Had a few games of 5 aside in there

Was like the bear pit in Endcliffe Park with the high walls and the viewing gallery at the top.

Would love to see some pictures of it if anybody has them.

These pictures are great, don't think I'd appreciated this was what the Lane looked like before. Has a bit of a Craven Cottage vibe. Are there any pictures of what it looked like from Cherry St end?

I met my wife in the beer keller in the pavilion, , shame it didnt have a preservation order, pretty bland as a car park
Not sure brutalist and Victorian architecture sit too well together. It would certainly have being quirky.

Yorkshire Cricket Club were founded at the Lane too, before the Dirties nicked it and dragged it up the road 30 miles.

When sitting in the South Stand in the 1980s, I always remember watching the blue clock on St Mary’s church (over the John Street Terrace). Can’t see it now, with the new stand.

I know the old John Street stand was probably not as tall as the re-built one we have today, but I'm sure you can still see a clock on the St Mary's church tower when sitting towards the back of the South Stand. Then again I might be getting myself confused when Sky Sports report from the gantry up there! You can definitely see St Mary's clock on TV behind the reporter.

I’ve always been a row EE man, so maybe not far back enough now!

The original John Street stand was a bit like that of Craven Cottage, same architect I believe - the famous Archibald Leitch, and this stand his first commission in England. I'd also love to see the street facing facade of this one if anyone has a photo?

Social club used to be in there too
Websters beer served??
Websters, a beer you only ever saw in clubs and nightclubs, where there was no competition.

Absolute garbage ale, even to a teenager who'd sup owt (and thought a good pint of Trophy was the dog's doodahs - how I am ashamed of my past life).

I completely forgot about that I played a game in there too. It was where the south side of the hotel is now.

The building highlighted yellow below.

Isn't the clock on the away end out by about 2 minutes, and hasn't it been like that for years. The fact that it's never been fixed makes me think it's meant to be some kind of tourist attraction like the Crooked Spire or the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

I am open to correction but l think the bramall lane clock is the original one installed when the stand was built in 1966, l first went to the lane in 1968. Before the south stand was built the clocks position was directly behind the goal and in the centre of same. Due to building of the family stand the whole pitch was moved towards the south stand, therefore the clocks position is no longer directly behind the goal

I hadn’t noticed it being wrong currently. I do remember there was a time - I think in the 1990s - when the Lane end clock used to lose time rapidly. When you entered the ground it would be roughly right, and it would lose time throughout the match until by the end it was about 15 minutes behind. I assume someone at the club must have worked out the rate at which it lost time and each week, before people started entering the ground, set it sufficiently ahead that it was about right at kick-off time.

I do remember having a few moments in the second half when I checked my watch and suddenly realised there was a lot less time left in the match than I’d thought, as I’d sub-consciously been going by the clock.

Has the Clock ever been hit by a wayward shot during a game?
I 've been going since the late 60's and can't ever recall this happening.
Chico Hamilton blasted a penalty over the bar in the late seventies, which we always joked had 'hit the clock'. I'm pretty sure it cleared the lower tier. It was a night match and I think it ended 0-0? Silent Blade ?

Looking at these it looks like the shift away from the centre happened before the new JS stand was built and when the scoreboard was introduced, and then a further shift as you say when the pitch moved.
