It is, I knooooow.
He's just clearly proud of everywhere else he's worked. He was happy to work (and be well paid) here as well, until he wasn't.
I just think if we've helped or persevered with his issues, addictions, problems or demons, a little strop like that seems a bit petulant
Do you have any insight into what the state of his mental health might be right now? Or are you making an uninformed judgment perhaps?

I can hardly contain myself with mystery, intrigue and excitement about what Ben Godfrey will unvail to amaze and surprise us. Actually, after thinking about this a little more, i have decided that i couldnt give a fuck what he does or says. Hes about as interesting as a pebble in my back garden.

What’s worrying is that Bettis said United were trying to get his transfer done most of the summer (Along them lines) and it was that we were playing hardball with Atalanta over figures.

So we chased this player clearly with issues and did no due diligence on what’s going on with him? Sums our summer up and the clowns in charge of recruitment.

We will go nowhere until there is a complete overhaul of the scouting department and Bettis included.

Did you comment about these clear issues at the time?

It's that a good thing? I'm lost

I left out loads of stuff out on the View From about his personal life. It didn't feel right quoting the things being spoken about so I just concentrated on the football side of things. There's no way United didn't know what had been going on so I can only assume they thought it was all behind him. Maybe it is and he just can't get motivated anymore. Still a crazy signing even without the benefit of hindsight

The alleged issues weren't unknown.

If I employed someone to run the club / it's finances, I'd hope they'd do some due diligence before committing a very large sum of money to the deal.

I agree. Then we need to know who scouted him, who wanted him and went upstairs to ask for the money. It’s not a one person issue. I find it hard to believe that the very people who put the money into the club aren’t initially listening to the actual football side rather than someone who is purported to run the show by people who don’t actually know his involvement in signings outside financial issues.

I’ve asked before how do people know his exact remit.

I also agree his private life is his.

I think it was a total desperation signing. We'd started appallingly and were really struggling to bring targets in. Hoyland possibly knew a lot about Godfrey from his time at Everton and perhaps gave a good review of his capabilities. He did start well at Everton and there was obviously a player in there at some point but there was also clearly a lot more going on. I think we panicked and signed him hoping his talent level alone would be good enough for The Championship.

Ipswich made the same gamble with him last season. They'd have been aware of the off field stuff but thought it was worth giving a chance to someone who had been an England international just a few years earlier. They were in The Premier League though and a 6 month loan wasn't a huge deal. For us though, it was a hell of a lot of money to pay out on someone who had barely played football in the last 4 years

Apart from recruiting some crap players we seemed to have no plan to recruit players for particular positions. No one seemed to notice until about the last day of the window that we had sold our 2 CBs (Anel and JLT) and therefore had no CHs at the club. We had sold Moore which meant we only had Campbell as a front man and hadn't replaced our only DMF Souza. A complete shambles which no amount of AI, statistics or any computer was going to sort out.
Maybe Wilders past signings of Hammond, Hussey, Leonard,Holmes, Baxter, Shackleton as Nd Grbic might have influenced CoH's judgement!

Where did I mention Selles failing was Wilders fault? The blame for that lies squarely with Bettis as he failed to put people in place to support Selles.
I wonder if Bettis had grown so close to Wilder that he was happy to see Selles fail and in fact had anticipated it would happen -
Let's face it , with the benefit of hindsight , it's pretty obvious to virtually everyone that Selles 'head coach' skillset was nowhere near suited to replacing a 'multifunctional' old style 'manager'.

Lets all feel sorry for someone who has earned in three months a lifetimes wages.
Valid point. I’m just reluctant to join this particular pile on given the mental health rumours.

Regardless, it has been a huge waste of money on our part. If, as has been said by some that the issues were already known, then once again we fall short in terms of recruitment.

I’d like to say lesson learned but I’m not sure that’s a capability of our current powers that be.

Literally the first interview I saw with Wilder as our boss was mostly a rant about how we needed to get Hammond out of the club and how negligent the club had been in giving the player the option to trigger a new contract.

AS oyhers said, Baxter and Hammond were signed before CW joined.
Geibic was sihned after he left.
We just about recouped our money on Leonnard.

3 out of 7 is a pretty poor hit rate.

If you are going to make up a stick to beat him with, you really do need to rey hartder.

I have no clue if the rumours are true and given their seriousness it's best not to speculatr, but this chat followed him from his time at Ipswich..

The loan has probably cost us a couple of million quid.

Even ignoring external factors - in a football sense, nobody knew what position he was supposed to play. It appeared right back, and he absolutely couldn't play it.

The incompetence of our decision makers over the Summer was quite incredible.
Absolutely true and its the same recruitment team overseeing the January window. The exception is CW who is big on character so hopefully no more mistakes and he's making all the right noises re quality over quantity and players who can come straight into the team.

SLIGHTLY OFF-TOPIC SEGUE: Feels a bit harsh to lump Baxter in with those others - he might have been a fat dopehead, but he clearly had bags of talent, scored some great goals for us and was a big part of those great cup-runs that we had that helped to distract from the drudgery and despair of league one.
