Thanks for starting this thread again. My programmes for this season have disappeared without trace, so I will have very little to contribute. The detail from the first report which caught my eye was about Spurs new keeper, Pat Jennings, getting a reaction from the Spurs fans by catching the ball from a centre with one hand; this was an impressive and distinctive feature of his goalkeeping.

Recall seeing a photo of Pat Jennings catching a cross one handed, amazing. I was a keen autograph hunter in those days and remember seeing the size of hands…..!

No memory of this game (probably away on holiday). Sounds like an undistinguished performance, with strong crowd reaction. Not a good way for Ron Simpson to play his last game for the Blades. He was one of my favourite players, as an out-and-out left-winger, good skills to beat his full-back, and a good left-foot for centring and shooting. ‘Pace headed in a Simpson centre’ was frequently reported, but my favourite Simpson moment was the reverse: away at Arsenal, 5th round of the Cup, February 1959, 2-2 draw, won the replay. In the first minute at Highbury Pace went down the right, and wisely put in a low cross (Simpson never headed the ball), and Simpson’s trusty left foot did the rest. That set the scene for a great Cup away day in London. A much better way to remember Ron Simpson.

Blades 2 (Hartle, Jones) Burnley 0

It was Doc Pace's last game for us. Not sure if his abdominal injury happened during the match or in the next few days. He was out of action until November, not sure if he played in a few reserves matches in his bid to return to fitness but in December he was transferred to Notts County.

Was it our first time wearing white socks for our home league matches?

Stoke 0 Blades 1 (Jones)

Alan Birchenall said in his autobiography that he thought he was going in the coach to the match just for the experience of travelling with the first team players. He said he ate like a horse in the pre match meal, enjoying his steak. After finishing his meal, he noticed that Graham Shaw didnt eat all of his steak so he asked him if he can have it. Graham replied "go ahead, you greedy pig!". Birchenall then ate Graham's steak. Just before the kick off at Victoria ground Birchenall was surprised to be told he was making his debut and he was worried about playing with a full stomach!

Wendy 0 Blades 2 (Birchenall 2)

Last week I asked my Uncle Ronnie if he was at the match. He said he wasnt at the match but couldnt remember why he missed the match. He thinks my dad was at the match. A friend of mine (now 74) who was at the match remembered reading about Alan Birchenall in the papers before the game but he wasnt confident that we would win and it was a surprise that "Sherman" scored twice in his only second 1st team match. He said the second goal was a beauty as Birchenall soared high to head in a Barry Hartle corner.

plus the arrival of the blonde bombers ⚔️

I think the below photo was taken in September 1964. What puzzles me is that we never played the same X1 in any match. If I am right in thinking that the photo was taken that month then why was Tony Wagstaff in John Docherty's place (number 7)?. Tony played in only one game (at West Ham on 26th Sept) from 29th August (v Burnley) until 14th November (v Leicester). We changed the colour of socks from red to white for home games after our first home league match (v Stoke) and why the red socks in the photo?

Referring to that Typhoo Tea team photo. I thought I had all of these until I visited the Programme Fair (around New Year) and I was told about Middlesbrough and Norwich photos which I don't have.

I have the Rotherham United one which I was told is quite rare.

My United one was on my bedroom wall for years and has drawing pin holes in the corners.

I can't remember how many coupons we had to collect to receive one team photo but we must have been drinking a helluva' lot of Typhoo Tea.

Everton 1 (Brown) Blades 1 (Jones)

Bob Widdowson's 3rd league game in three and half years. In the next four years he played in only 3 league and 1 cup game. He wore red socks in the match instead of the white socks our outfield players were wearing meanwhile Everton's keeper, Andy Rankin, was wearing black shorts instead of the white shorts Everton outfield players were wearing!

The referee was Denis Howell who was the MP for Birmingham Small Heath and was the Minister for Sport at the time.

Hi Silent - many thanks for rekindling old memories.

As a 12 year old my first United game was the 4-1 win over Middlesborough in April 1961 - the last game of the season. My older cousin took me to the game and from then on I was a devoted Unitedite. Living in Healey Bottom the Lane was a short walk away so I went to most home games with him until leaving for Australia in 1964. My last live games then were the 1-1 draw and 4-3 win over wolves that Easter weekend. Two days later I was on a boat to Australia and a new life. In 2008 I was in Sheffield on a visit from Aus and saw them play QPR for the first game of the new season. On the day it was my 60th birthday and a pre match tour of the ground and dressing room complete with the with the 3-nil win and a Billy Sharp hat trick were the icing on the cake. I'm still following them with all of the fervour of those days.

UTB

Peter
