Danny's Big Red and White Testicles - part deux?

Big test of character after a poor home result in our 'first big test'. Looking for Wilson to show some steel and for us to come out and dispatch Colchester. It is a perfect opportunity to bounce back and get things back on track before a difficult run of games starting away at Wycombe. We're looking for Wilson to show some balls, or remain calm and tell the players to keep doing what they have been doing but cut out the mistakes.

I would like to see Ched start (for Porter), McDonald start (in place of Williamson) and possibly Mendez-Laing (in place of Flynn). I think the former two will happen, but Wilson may give Flynn (his signing) another chance, against a less physical team.

I think if we remain calm and confident, keep playing as we have been doing and leanr from Tuesday then we will be easy winners. I am looking for a bit of professionality and nouse when we play. I do think we will bounce back and win 2-0.

.

I love phrases like that. Picture the scene tomorrow in the dressing room at 2.55.

WILSON: and one last thing lads, cut out the mistakes.

SIMONSEN: thanks for that boss. We were all thinking that you wanted us to carry on making mistakes. We're so glad you cleared that up.

:-)

To echo what Olle says, will be test of our character and ability to bounce back. Big game this.

Simonsen, Lowton, Collins, Maguire, Williams, Mendez-Laing, McDonald, Doyle, Quinn, Evans, Cresswell.

That is the team I expect will feature.

JFL is back so I wonder which way DW will turn.

I'd personally like to see.

Simmo
Lowton JFL Maguire Williams
Flynn McDonald Quinn Tonne
Evans Cresswell

Subs: Long Collins Doyle NML Porter/Philliskrik

Collins has done well but I think JFL has more pace and by all accounts isn't too bad at centre half, Williams looked comfortable on the ball and grew as a defender the other night. Its harsh on Collins as he has shown some good play this season. Mcdonald doesn't look too bad at doing the dirty work as well and Quinny drifts naturally to the centre here he could be a focal point on our build up play, Tonne and Flynn both have decent pace and can stretch teams.
Flynn hasn't shone, but if you watch he was involved in alot of good little moves in the last game, nothing glaring but played the simple stuff we needed at times in that area.

I think we lacked alot of movement on Tuesday off the ball in centre mid, I think this team is far more mobile, but thats the team I'd play as a coach, after what I saw Tuesday, I just think we need to freshen a few things up a bit. Of cousre i don't witness the players in training everyday so it's just my opinion.

Collins has been about our best performer all season so why drop him?

Its the first big test this weekend to bounce back and despite my reservations (some would say Ramblings - Hi Mic :)) about Wilson, I am starting to think that he has a bit more about him.

Having said that, I don't see it as a major issue, we certainly shouldn't be dropping players for an off game, but perhaps those who have come from the bench should be given a chance.

Players like Cresswell (Has he ever been fully fit, proper warhorse), Flynn, Macdonald and Porter have all done well to build their fitness back up and there have been quite a few games in a short space of time, so a rest would be welcomed if we have other players that can be thrown in.

This is also now the perfect time for the likes of Tonne, Philiskirk, Ched, Parinno and MDL to start putting themselves on show.

Should be an intriguing game

Stated above, I think JFL has more pace and could bring more to that side of the defending. I think Collins has been great thus far barring Tuesday, but sometimes you just need a little change to keep things from going stale. Competition can be healthy too.

I myself aint talking about dropping players after Tuesday just freshening things up, Lowton, Collins and Harry have featured in every game, to me Tuesday was the first time a little wearyness crept in, and it brought around a bit of complacency.

Interesting team above beech. Cant see Danny ever picking that side but doesnt look bad to me.

I like the system Swansea play with (4-2-3-1). I think we have the players for that.

Simonsen
Lowton Collins Maguire Jean-Francois
McDonald Quinn
Mendez-Laing Philliskirk Tonne
Evans

Dont think we would ever see that either. I get the impression the gaffer is strictly a 4-4-2 man.

To be fair, if it aint broke why fix it?

The way that SS makes mistakes, then it might be worth having a quiet word to see if he has got the wrong idea!?

Do not agree with this one iota. Why break up the best defensive partnership in the league, after they have one bad game (gainst top of the league). I like JFL, but his defending has been a bit suspect and he gets himself in pickles sometimes. This could be telling at centre half. Also a centre back partnership of Maguire and JFL is inexperienced. Collins has been fantastic this season and it would be madness to drop him. He has defended brilliantly, distributed well, always offered and option for SS when throwing the ball out ond has often turned defence into attack.

Your last point is the most crucial one. Never mind these namby pamby fancy formations. Stick to 4-4-2: the formation that see's us in 2nd place (level on points with 1st). Maybe try something different against Rotherham in the JPT, but we want 3 points on Saturday. My team:

----------- SS

Lowton Collins Maguire JFL*

M. Laing Doyle McDonald Quinn

------ Cressy Evans

* I see the argument for keeping Williams in the team.

That team above is (imo) close to our full strength side. With the exception of Monty in for Doyle, I don't think many would argue that this is not very close to the best team we could put out. Let's play our best team and get back on track.

That’s fair enough, you don't have to agree that’s the beauty, it's my opinion, I think Collins has been good yes, very good in comparison to last year, but far from fantastic.

JFL has been a player to receive the ball from Simmo numerous times, he also looks to bring the ball out and play it. Both have done this well at times.

There have also been suspect moments in matches for Collins, like at Bury when he tried to be fancy in the box and got the ball tangled in his feet, the ball dropped behind, a Bury striker was just behind, thankfully Collins turned quick enough, but was forced to smash the ball out for a throwing when all he had to do before was lay a first time pass to Doyle five yard away, instead of fannying around. There were also moments in the Scunthorpe match you can see he loses his man a few times on their early chances. I chalk these more down to complacency due to the sheer amount of matches he's been playing in, and I'd also be looking to rest Harry the following game. Playing players continuously, especially after a gruelling start like ours, can eventually lead to problems as fatigue sets in mistakes and injuries become more likely.

Plus why bring in Williams if we aren't going to use him for the month, what a waste that would be when we could have managed with Parrino and Lowton for Tuesday, I think bringing him in gives DW options for these kind of changes.

Neither do I, but I think it's a team that would do very well given the chance. I think that midfield gives us great options going forward and never detracts us away from playing football, for some reason the CM, DW picked the other night struggled and flapped under pressure but Quinn and McDonald looked composed and assured whilst still under the same amounts of pressue. Plus we lacked any movement, I think those players are better at movement off the ball than the CM from Tuesday.

Indeed Beechy. I respect your opinion, but do not agree with it. This is a forum for healthy debate and that is what I see this as.

I just don't see the point of unsettling a good centre back partnership. Plus I think it would be a real risk to plays Lecs at CB. It is not his recognised position (in addition to my other reasons above). Why sign Williams? Strength in depth. Cover. Extra options. There is a strong case for Williams to play ahead of Lesclinel at LB. Parrino is cover for Lowton, but it also means that Wilson may put Lowton out wide right at some point (possibly a position he may fare better in).

It is a fair point about fatigue and Collins and Maguire have played every minute of every game so far. That's 11 games, which is a lot of football in just 6 or 7 weeks. However, my opinion is that we would be better making changes for a less important game. Say for example try playing JFL as CB against Rotherham in the JPT. I think tomorrow is really important. It is our biggest game and a real test of character. We have a difficult trip to Wycombe, followed by fancied Charlton and suddently if we don't win today we look like we could slip away from the top.

Because of the above I would go with the strongest team. What we know has worked so far. No need to panic, or start chopping and changing after one poor result.
