For me the jury's still out on Adkins. We have been saying for a long time that we need to give a manager more than one season - ideally two at least - to build their own team. Obviously exceptions should be made if it looks like we might actually go down but otherwise, even if we finish mid table, Adkins probably deserves another year.

It's not necessarily the manager that's at fault. In addition to Adkins, two of the managers we've had in recent history had great records before coming to the Lane. Adams and Wilson both had numerous promotions behind them. They didn't just become crap managers after signing a contract with Sheffield United. They were hampered by the huge expectation at the Lane, probably combined with difficulties in bringing in the players they want - and in DW's case a big slice of bad fortune. To be fair Wilson's tenure wasn't crap but we still sacked him
In my view the sacking of Wilson was a travesty - we would imo be mid Championship now.

Piggy being the operative word. We should never have appointed a grunter, simple as that.
Agree. We put up with him whilst we were winning but as soon as it started to go wrong a lot of people quickly turned on him.

The football in his first season was amongst the best I've seen us play. The football in the second was far from inspiring, and we didn't have a £3m striker to bail us out when we underperformed. We had a £1m striker, and got to top of the league, but once he went, we had Porter, Ironside, Kitson and Forte. Not a promotion winning attacking force.

I can see why we sacked Wilson, but I bet you anything the board mightily regret it now.

Warnock. In the same division the day he finished as the day he started.

7 and a half years on the road to nowhere.

A slightly simplistic view! Although the division was the same, there were a lot of other improvements:
(i) Average crowds up from about 15,000 to over 30,000
(ii) Turned us from a bottom-half team to a top-half team
(iii) The club's finances were vastly improved during that time
(iv) Although we 'ended' at the same point that we started, there were a lot of highs during that time - better than spending seven years in League One and then getting promoted
(v) We completely overtook the oinkers (though that wasn't hard to do, it was still very satisfying)

And we gave those pigs several damn good thrashings.

Why doesn't he rejoin us, if he going to get Rotherham job.

Danny Wilson did what it says on the tin. 'Close but no cigars' is the story of his CV, so many nearly moments and he carried that trend on at the Lane. That said he was unlucky with what happened to Ched in his first season and was sold down the river by McCabe in his second season with the sale of Blackman. Around the same time he also lost Miller to injury when he was looking good and a little later Diego DG to injury when he was looking good as well. And of course McCabe didn't allow any adequate replacements with the Blackman money.

Warnock down to 1/3. Anyone else follow Blade58 's tip?

Unfortunately, if they have they could still do their money.

Still fav but there is a hitch which Dkc has alluded to already so I'm led to believe

I have a few bob on and a saver on Gray after I heard about the hitch and I believe he is/was second choice. Who knows tho, got it wrong before and I'll get it wrong again so we'll see

I think that statement is somewhat lacking in relevant detail.

Same division, yes. But as I remember it, we were in the bottom three when he took over. The team he left was certainly not a bottom three team, and in my opinion would have got promoted again had he stayed.

You could argue he did better than Bassett who also left us in the same division, but in a similar position to when he started - staring relegation in the face.

You serious? I can't remember who else was in the running tbh but Piggy Danny did a decent job and was very unlucky

There are quite a few Blades who think this shower should be top two because the league is crap.

Wilson mob should have been 6 points clear at the top, he failed miserably in the third division with a reasonable division two squad.

When he took over he had six months to "save" United. He followed Heath who had taken just four points from thirty, no win in ten. He was sacked. Our last nine matches that season, we drew four, lost five. Four points from twenty-seven. Spot the minor difference.
It took him six seasons to get United promoted or was it Blackwell who was "Holmes" and Warnock the "Watson" of the two?
Some of the hoofball that we played under him/them was atrocious at times.
Semi-final appearances and failings, so what?
Because he finally achieved something then failed again immediately, let's not make the man a Blades' legend.
It's a shame that the football forums hadn't really taken off during his tenure at BDTBL.
Biggest steaming pile of shite ive read on this site
