Let's see where we are, say, end of October. I believe bringing wilder back was a mistake but like others, in current circumstances we don't have many options.

However, as a mate was saying to me today, it's still a pretty decent first team we have, a bit reduced when looking at the second string.

What I don't want is an implosion where we're looking fooked ahead of Christmas, players out injured and wilder going even more negative and shifting all fault to the owners. At that point we may as well twist and see if anyone else can get a tune out of what's left.

Was going to make the sort of post that this indicates the archetypal glass half empty mentality then compare to the actual chances in the market, but we are actually 25/75 to go down, so I guess they have already priced in the possibility of a points deduction. That 25/75, if Wilder was sacked, would probably switch to all of 24/76 at worst
From Oddschecker: Championship - Relegation Betting Odds ; Lincoln. 4/7 ; Preston. 11/8 ; Bolton. 2/1 ; Sheffield Utd. 7/2 ; Cardiff City. 7/2. I genuinely think that we would shorten considerably if Wilder was replaced.

If we are in that position, I might well agree, but as you say, it's not one for now - 100% support is what is needed.

I think you overstate how much of a difference a manager would actually make in our situation but if you disagree, that's fine

Shorten considerably? We were 20/1 a couple of weeks ago.

My first wife and I were Godparents to one of Don's girls and I wrote this at the time.

Don was married to my first wife's best mate in Manchester and they knew him from his days at Man U.

I got on really well with Don and we stayed with them in Crowthorne, Berkshire, and they stayed with us in Leeds on several occasions.

By the way, Don joined us with 16 matches left and we were in 12th position - he played 11 and scored 3 under Martin Peters and if a player wanted to speak to Martin Peters, they had to make an appointment.

On the day of the match, my then father-in-law and I were sat in the JSS and we had gifts for one of Don's girls as it was her birthday and we had agreed to meet him after the match.

When Don finally went to take the penalty, my father-in-law (who had know Don since he was a lad at Man U) said to me, "Don's taking it - no chance he'll score."

When the game was over, we went round to the player's entrance and waited for Don. We asked for a message to be taken to him that we had the gifts - a message came back to leave them with the doorman as it was going to be a long time before they could leave.

Next day, in the evening, we phoned Don's wife to see how he was and she told us this.

"We had Sunday dinner and I left Don to wash up. I heard the dishes clattering as he put them into the sink and I could hear the water running. I was playing with the kids in the lounge for a while and suddenly realised there was no noise coming from the kitchen but there was no sign of Don who used to love playing games with his daughters.

I went to the kitchen to see that the sink was overflowing and there was water every where.

Don was slumped over the table with his head in his hands shaking his head as he relived the match and the missed penalty. He had told me that John Matthews was down to take penalties but he had refused. No-one else would step up so Don took the responsibility even though he was absolutely no penalty taker.

He was reliving the match and hates himself and blames himself but what could he do? No-one else would take the penalty."

Don Givens has always been blamed for taking us down and to me, the blame has always rested with Martin Peters. He took over in January from Harry Haslam when Harry was ill and we were 12th in the table with 16 to play.

Another sh1te manager!

The attached photo at our place in Leeds in the early 80's: from left; my Father in law, Moi, Mrs BoSS I's biological brother (she was adopted by my in-laws), and Don Givens far right.

He was gutted and he told me once that whenever he drives near Sheffield, he wears a mask!!! ;)
Great story,I was there and at the time we saw all the other players turn their heads. I don’t blame him one iota. Players,no matter who they are, shrink when something important rolls up in front of them. We deserved to go down because of previous results, ala Warnock in the Premier League.

I’m totally not a Wlder fan, but in our current position we need someone who genuinely loves the club and knows how to work around these circs, best we can hope for right now.

Couldn't agree with you more.

Why does love of club trump ability?

Don't get me wrong, when the chips are down - and if we get a deduction - Wilder is one of a few managers id actually trust to get the players fighting (as we've seen him do before), but if that situation doesn't happen? Do we trust him to achieve with this team?

yes that is a great story john mathews was the guilty party that day he had been thumping penalties in all that season as an anecdote i happened to be at swillsborough the night mike doyle struck a similar penalty straight in to the hands of peter grumitt at the kop end of the sty it was so obvious he missed it deliberately and that man city were throwing that game unfortunately for the pigs nobody told ian bowyer who was given a right royal bollocking by tony book when he scored the winner 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Similar happened at old Trafford with a Denis Law flimsy back heel to send Manchester United down,he never attempted anything during the game and he said I aimlessly back heeled it and it pea rolled into the net. Then we come to Hans Segars….

I was at the ga
At the time Don Givens was the leading international goalscorer for Northern Ireland. It was a reasonable expectation given his experience and willingness to take the kick, that he'd slot it home. Alas not to be as he weakly passed the ball to the Walsall keeper. Cue rage and pandemonium.
He wasn't ever going to score, absolute shambles of a player when he got to us. Having said that Martin Peters is the worst manager we have ever had. I would take 10 Selles appointments before another disinterested fool like him
