If clough comes out and categorically states he didnt want him I will be totally satisfied that ive got this all wrong

HE won't though he was hired to work on a shoestring and seems to be as accepting of that as most on here

blinkered. Unreal the utter drivel some people spout on here.

From The Star July 29th:

Nigel Clough, the Sheffield United manager, has refused to rule-out the possibility of resigning Liverpool’s Conor Coady despite admitting that a new midfielder does not feature among his priorities in transfer market.

Although Clough acknowledged the arrival of James Wallace, Ben Davies, Chris Basham and Jamal Campbell-Ryce meant strengthening United’s “defence and attack” was now his most pressing concern, he said: “If we ever had the opportunity to work with Conor again then, yes, it’s something we’d like to do. At the moment we are pretty well-stocked in there but you never know what might happen in the future. We’ll see.”

Hardly sounds desperate to get him back - a nice-to-have rather than a priority. Which is likely irrelevant if Coady had no intention of playing another year in League 1.

We have done our midfield business. We moved onto other signings we could bring in quickly rather than hang on and wait till Liverpool had made up their mind. This is why we went after Alcock rather than wait on Brayford too - who won't be returning too I'm afraid.

Put it this way. We could have waited and waited till now, held off signing Wallace & Basham, and even then still missed out on Coady if (as would be understandable) he'd prefer a season immediately in the Championship. We would likely then have missed out on our other targets and be scrambling round for a midfield days before our first game. We aren't - Clough is dealing with that sort of reality and has handled everything extremely calmly. We are, just as he intended, ready to start the season.

Why, didn't you know, the 9(?) players we've signed this summer are all playing for us for free. Their agents negotiated their contracts for free and not one of them received a signing on fee and as I type Jim Phipps and Kevin McCabe are sat in the boardroom lighting cigars with £50 notes laughing their tits off because it obviously in their best interests for the club to remain in league one.

/sarcasm
Why, did you know,L Taylor,S Mcginty,F Brandy,T Mcmahon,S Miller,C Mcfadzean,G Long,M Hill,D Westlake,E Whitehouse,J Johns and a couple of others never had any wages when they were playing for us,they played for free.Their agents were fuming over it and as i type Jim Phipps and Kevin McCabe are sat in the boardroom now laughing their bollocks of at how gullible our fans are.
Sarcasm;) you get my drift.

To be fair, most of that lot should have played for free. My god, we've offloaded some dross.

I completely get that Coady has made the right choice in playing for Huddersfield. Playing at a higher level is what he needs to do right now.

What does piss me off however is that it seems we were never ever in the running for him when the paltry fee of 400k was enough to discuss personal terms at the very least. I have been, and still shall be, all for the prudent approach when it comes to strengthening the squad to get out of this division, big money isn't necessary. But we seemed to have just missed out on probably the best/most realistic transfer we could've hoped for without giving it a go.

If Clough/Brannigan/Phipps etc. come out and say that we offered that fee and for whatever reason we lost out, i'll simmer from pissed off to suspicious. But this coupled with the breakdown of the Keiron Freeman transfer suggests to me that something isn't right with how we're approaching transfer negotiations ourselves. Lightning striking twice and all that.

It's fair to say that we haven't lived up to the subjective statement of "game changing investment" in the eyes of most fans, myself included.

If we get promoted this season, it's Clough who will get the credit, not the board. And then it will be time to assess the questionable strategy of saving significant investment until we reach the championship. I have my doubts.

A summary of my last post:
- we weren't prepared to wait for anyone other than the elusive striker, as made clear by Clough right at the start of the summer
- we went and signed other players in exactly that position because we didn't want to wait
- the fee being 400k is irrelevant given the two points above, and doubly irrelevant if Coady was planning to play at a higher level this season

I'm in the minority then. We'll see if the Maguire cash gets banked or spent over the next season ( I expect some good loans at the very least), but we're miles ahead of where we were under McCabe in terms of willingness to invest. We can see that throughout the club, not just on the playing front.

You're totally correct - the phrases used are very open ended, but then my expectations are probably lower (or dare I say more realistic?) than most.

So Conor Coady has gone elsewhere, and some seem to be imploding? Is this in the joke section or something?

He was poor for a large part of last season, then found his and became a really good player for us over the last third of the season. But come on, really? Was he that good? I'd have liked to have taken him on and chucked 250K at it. But talk of £1M, or around there is laughable.

Once you've erased the subjective statement of "game changing investment" from your mind, and I too don't think we measured up to that either, you have to accept that spending this type of money as a 3rd division club is just financial suicide. Put Brayford in with that too.

Sure, early in the season he wasn't that good, but after that he was great .A real midfielder with goals and classy, bossy.
250k,for ex england U21 captain, and ,for me, a really good tour of USA with the reds.Don't think so !
We get 2.5mill for McGuire, and you want CC for that money ..I wish..
Anyway,I don't think that all this bollocks about us not being able to afford him, wages etc,has much to do with it.
NC wanted to get his squad (or group as its now called !),early, and CC obviously wanted to chance it with the Reds, and we've bought a shitload of midfielders,so not really that high on the list.
CC has seen a decent Champ club come in and gone for it, I for one wish him well.

I think it's fair to say that we've been unwinding the ridiculous spending of the past over the last few years, and as such we've sold anything of any worth. But that process was going to come to an end without investment, in so much as you run out of things worth selling, and you are no longer crippled by the wages and associated costs of the deals.

Given the above, I think it's reasonable to hope that Sheffield United would be able to sign players from clubs like Walsall, Blackpool and Tranmere without it being described as a game changing phase.

I speak from a position of being largely happy with where were at right now, and I / we cannot expect that someone else bankrolls us. But the game changing statement set an expectation, and though I can't back it up, I believe most will believe we've fallen short of this.

Toys out the pram if we haven't had public confirmation that we've bid for players, constant bollocks rumours being recycled and leapt upon as a means of criticising the club, Jim Phipps Twitter feed clogged up with morons badgering him for increasingly ridiculous demands for financial information.

Am I living in a parallel universe here, or have a section of our support contracted ADHD?

NC was most certainly not hired to work on a shoestring. Quite simply, he would not have taken the job on those terms.

Nigel is financially secure and has no need to take on hopeless causes. He's joined us to build something that will last and we can be proud of, not to hobble along on worn out trainers.

Neither would Steve Bruce, if you remember that saga. what United tell people and what they do are usually different things where finances are concerned.

There has been investment, with some good signings, but game changing it ain't. Top 2 will be hard with this squad.

I think it will be game-changing in due course. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Surprised we could not get him really at that price.

Although he gets to try his hand at Championship football. So it's debatable that he would have come to us anyway.

If everybody in the ground thought coady was transformed under nigel clough, and we had the maguire money, then why not sign him?

Coady, will be transfered for millions next time he moves, cloughs second massive error in my opinion..

Porter was the first..

Because if he starts on Saturday, were going nowhare...

Stating the obvious but, as we have not yet played any games, there has been nothing to change. Let's be happy that things look far more positive than they have been for many a season. Glass half full and filling

Tezza, I really don't see retaining our top goal scorer as back up, and on a better contract, as far as SUFC are concerned, as a major mistake.

£375k???!!! Missed a bargain there! I do think Wallace could be sensational for us though...... Providing he doesn't become the new Dean Ashton.

Coady would have been a massive asset for us as he will be in the Championship. I wish he was coming to BDTBL. As for Wallace, I was going to say that the proof of the pudding is in the eating only in his case he is more likely to be in the sickroom. Doesn't matter how good a player he is - if he's not out there playing he's no use to us. Lets hope he can manage to get through a season without too much time off, but I have my doubts.

Nigel has asked for a budget. And its been accepted by the board.

Maybe if Liverpool didn't ask for 1M at the end of last season then we wouldn't have gone out and got Basham, Wallace etc.

I'm now of the school of thought that Nigel would rather keep the rest of his budget for loans and Jan to get us over the finish line.

Sarcasm;) you get my drift.

I do get your drift but I'm willing to bet you that the sum of their salaries is dwarfed by that of the new boys

And do you know what - I'm glad that we're not throwing money about in some Man City of the lower leagues strategy because it'll only lead to mercinaries and leeches milking what they can and the short term gains would cause longer term damages.

All power to the Prince and his team for doing things the right way - they've backed their manager with the money he wanted and the manager is free to use it how he sees fit. Can't ask for more than that from a board of directors.

As a set of supporters we seem to have been downtrodden so much that selling players and not spending the money doesn't even raise a murmur anymore

Have we not spent any money then?

Didn't we get the money we wanted for Harry? Clough seemed to think so. He'd said previously that if we get the money for him that we want, it allows us to bring in 2-3 other players.

Clough said yesterday that he's looking to sign two before Friday.

As far as I can see no we havent and I cant wait to see the two or three loan signings come in

I have a bad feeling about Wallace - his injury record was poor last year and he's struggled to get fit through the pre season

Don't think he has put in 90 minutes total in the entire pre season programme !

Feel the same, which is a shame because the bit I have seen of him he looks like he could be the signing of the season. Just waiting for the announcement that he is going to be out for the first three months, such is our luck.
