My best guess would be that we enquired early in the summer and were either told to hold fire by Liverpool, or given a valuation we didn't agree with. As a result, Clough carried on signing other targets for that central midfield area.
Liverpool have had a look at him in this pre-season and obviously don't see enough potential in him and are therefore happy to let him go - by which point no one else had come in with a better offer than Huddersfield and we are no longer interested. We have Wallace, Basham, Doyle, McGinn, and Scougall who will all compete for those midfield spots, in addition to Dimiao and Reed.
At this juncture I can't see any logic in trying to sign Coady, I'd rather we looked for one more striker and/or an attacking full back.
He was good for us last season but not so good that our summer recruitment should have focused on him as a priority. Good luck to him.
Apparently we enquired about young Coady early on in the summer along with Wolves and Liverpool slapped a hefty £1m price tag on him due to the interest. Both us an wolves seem to have been put off by the valuation and turned our attentions elsewhere, as soon as Liverpool realised both us and Wolves weren't going to cough up it seems they have slashed the price now in the 11th hour to offload the lad.
I've just said it in chat box on main page and I will say it agree. Clough refuses to pay over the odds for players, it might bite us on the backside at some point but never the less you have to admire how he goes about business. He said himself that he was given the budget he asked the board for in order to improve the team. He had ideas of which areas needed improving and he wasn't going to pay over the odds for any single player only to go light elsewhere. He likes to have bit of money left in the pot for last minute signings and loans as well.
Coady came on well as a player last season but no doubt a player attached with a team of liverpool's stature will have had a demanding agent as well and will have been touting Coady's vital role in us getting to the F.A Cup semi final when it came to wage demands and stuff.
Shame he hasn't returned but all things said and done I trust in Tol'd Nige to bring in the right quantity and quality of players. If you would have told me after the season ended that 9 new players would be coming in including Campbell Ryce, Basham, McNulty, Higdon, and Wallace I would have snapped your hands off.
