Gone Elsewhere Conor Coady

My best guess would be that we enquired early in the summer and were either told to hold fire by Liverpool, or given a valuation we didn't agree with. As a result, Clough carried on signing other targets for that central midfield area.

Liverpool have had a look at him in this pre-season and obviously don't see enough potential in him and are therefore happy to let him go - by which point no one else had come in with a better offer than Huddersfield and we are no longer interested. We have Wallace, Basham, Doyle, McGinn, and Scougall who will all compete for those midfield spots, in addition to Dimiao and Reed.

At this juncture I can't see any logic in trying to sign Coady, I'd rather we looked for one more striker and/or an attacking full back.

He was good for us last season but not so good that our summer recruitment should have focused on him as a priority. Good luck to him.

Apparently we enquired about young Coady early on in the summer along with Wolves and Liverpool slapped a hefty £1m price tag on him due to the interest. Both us an wolves seem to have been put off by the valuation and turned our attentions elsewhere, as soon as Liverpool realised both us and Wolves weren't going to cough up it seems they have slashed the price now in the 11th hour to offload the lad.

I've just said it in chat box on main page and I will say it agree. Clough refuses to pay over the odds for players, it might bite us on the backside at some point but never the less you have to admire how he goes about business. He said himself that he was given the budget he asked the board for in order to improve the team. He had ideas of which areas needed improving and he wasn't going to pay over the odds for any single player only to go light elsewhere. He likes to have bit of money left in the pot for last minute signings and loans as well.

Coady came on well as a player last season but no doubt a player attached with a team of liverpool's stature will have had a demanding agent as well and will have been touting Coady's vital role in us getting to the F.A Cup semi final when it came to wage demands and stuff.

Shame he hasn't returned but all things said and done I trust in Tol'd Nige to bring in the right quantity and quality of players. If you would have told me after the season ended that 9 new players would be coming in including Campbell Ryce, Basham, McNulty, Higdon, and Wallace I would have snapped your hands off.

After an hour or so of thought I reckon that Coast would have secured a very lucrative contract with Hudds. (Prob more than his Liverpool one) we wouldn't have been able to compete with that anyway.

If we were both in the Champ I would have thought he would have chose us. Were not so that's the end of that.

Bingo. I'm surprised at the reaction on here - particularly the suggestion that the board have somehow not backed Clough, when Clough himself has been fairly clear that we wanted to do as much business as possible early (which he's done) but was prepared to wait for the right striker (which he has also done). Coady wasn't someone we were prepared to wait on after Liverpool's initial reaction. Nor is Brayford for that matter. And that's assuming either would jump at the chance if we came calling. This is why we've approached other targets in a calm, professional, and above all planned manner.

We sell Maguire for 2.5m and we can't even pick up Coady when I have to watch cunts like Doyle, McGinn and Basham in midfield this season. Yet, people will defend it come hell or high water.

You might not like them as players (despite the fact you've had a tiny amount of time to judge Basham in a United shirt - not even a single competitive game), but is there any need to abuse them so much? really?

Probably a bit much and I am sorry, however I am just livid when we haven't been competing for players and seem to be scrapping around on teh cheap all the time.

We've been competing for various players this summer, having signed a few that had multiple offers (and ones higher than us at that).

Free or undisclosed signings still cost plenty of money, as does picking up those unattached.

With our Liverpool type investment!

If Coady's not good enough for them, then he's not good enough for us.

I'm beginning to think that had this place existed in 2005 some of our fans would have imploded at the sale of our top goalscorer from the previous season.

"Why the hell have we sold someone that got 15 goals last season, barely days into the new season? Just typical. And who does McCabe think is an adequate replacement for Gray - Neil fucking Shipperley? That carthorse isn't even fit to start a game yet. Cheap as ever United."

Why, didn't you know, the 9(?) players we've signed this summer are all playing for us for free. Their agents negotiated their contracts for free and not one of them received a signing on fee and as I type Jim Phipps and Kevin McCabe are sat in the boardroom lighting cigars with £50 notes laughing their tits off because it obviously in their best interests for the club to remain in league one.

Go on mate. Let it all out. Have a good cry.

Coady was a decent player but he wasn't the messiah. We don't know what the full deal was, don't forget the biggest cost in deals like this can be wages. We've got our new forward and maybe another forward sometime in winter. I am very optimistic, but it will be a rocky road, it always is.

WAGES WAGES WAGES WAGES WAGES. FFP. We still need another defender and attacker. Simples.

Also I'm more excited than I was last season. We have a decent team, one of the best in the division, and a manager that has proven he can take a bag of shite and turn it into chocolate pudding. COYRAWW.

Some serious pair growing needs to happen tonight based on some overreactions here.

People seem to be missing the point .we are told we are debt free and dont have to sell anyone .then we sell our most sellable asset and when a player becomes available we should be able to afford (even before the sale) we sre not even in the picture

Does anyone on here really believe we will spend any of the maguire money on team strengthening ?

Huddersfield are a class apart from us at present, witness the recent friendly, and Coady has made the right move for himself it pains me to say. It is obvious that we are not in a position to go spending big bucks and despite us being the biggest club in the third division, any club in the Championship are going to be a bigger pull than us. I've been critical of the close season signings but I'm beginning to now get the message. Still think we are weak in the central pairing at the back but the signing of Higdon has cheered me up no end. Think it will be a slow start to season particularly with a difficult opening game but hopefully if we can overcome the injury jinx that seems to be plaguing us at the moment plus getting Higdon etc up to speed, but I'm more optimistic.

Several posters have pointed out that we already have a plethora of options in central midfield - what if it is simply the case that we could have lodged a bid but Clough didn't want to? The issue then is not about being able to afford his fee (which I have no doubt we could), but it is simply that our manager didn't want to sign him.

I'd say you are missing the point.

People are only missing the point if there's a point to miss. This quoted post is opinion stated as fact. "We are not in the picture". The truth is no one on here is in possession of the real facts, and yeah, it's easy to say "typical united", "where's the money gone", "why can't we compete with mickymouse outfits like Huddersfield" etc.
However, it's all speculation and shouldn't be used as a valid argument base.

There's always two sides to every story and the truth is often somewhere inbetween.

But why bid for Coady after we've brought in Wallace and Basham? Landing Coady was always an outside chance, and we went elsewhere. Decision made.

We'll find out where the Maguire money goes, but we left Coady behind a while ago.

So Conor Coady has gone elsewhere, and some seem to be imploding? Is this in the joke section or something?

He was poor for a large part of last season, then found his and became a really good player for us over the last third of the season. But come on, really? Was he that good? I'd have liked to have taken him on and chucked 250K at it. But talk of £1M, or around there is laughable.

Once you've erased the subjective statement of "game changing investment" from your mind, and I too don't think we measured up to that either, you have to accept that spending this type of money as a 3rd division club is just financial suicide. Put Brayford in with that too.

Jim Phipps already said on Twitter today that its business as usual with regards to coady and it was up to Nigel if we went for him or not. I don't understand the hoo har. Really I don't. Nigel thinks we obviously don't need him, has said he wants another 2 people in and is happy with what we have in midfield so I would rather trust his judgement and let him bring in players we actually need to get out of this shithole of a league rather than buying people cos they had a decent couple of months with us.
